letter which is to be ta (en by the LETTER-HOLDER. X Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed .Tune 1, 1916. Serial No. 101,129.
To all w/wm z'zf may concern.'
Be it known that I, CLAUDE F. MARTIN, acitizen of the United States, residing at Paxton, in the county of Ford and State of Illihave invented certain new and useful mprovements in Letter-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
his invention relates to an improvement .in letter holders, and more, particularly to a device of this nature which is adaptable or use in connection with boxes such as are used on rural delivery routes.
An object of my invention is to provide a holder which may be attached and fitted in place in the boxes as manufactured, or which may be sold as a separate attachment o be applied by the usci', and which is so constructed that .it may be tted and used in conjunction with practically standard and approved types of rural delivery boxes. Y
A further object is to so construct the device that as the door of the box is opened the hol adapted for the y reason of the fact that the hold present the letter conspicuously to tention immediately the b lVith t ie above and other objects in view,
which will be hereinafter set forth particularly pointed n the drawings: *igure l is a View in longitudinal vertical section through a mail box with the device of my invention fitted in an operative relation therein.
Fig. 2 is a detail sectional View on the line 2,`2 of Fig. l. Y
ig. 3 is a view in perspective of the track way in which the holder is mounted to be capable of movement.
he numeral l designates the mail box as an entirety7 which a e manner as porting standard or post 2, and this box has t e door 3 thereof hinged at one end in such door is opened it has upward swingingmovement. trackway 4 which may be constructed 'om a strip of sheet metal havingthe edges Patented Mar. 27, 191 '7.
flanges 5 and 6 is ings 7 adjacent which e inner side ox. sown in Fig. l, the trackway 1l is secured in lun'izontal disposition adjacent to the ottoni of tlie box and along one of the side walls thereof with one end c oor opening. A slide b stantiallv the same length as the trackway l and is received in the trackway to have an easj7 sliding lit and to be held against lateral displacement by the over` nanging Hanges 5 and G. V
A spacing' block 9 is mounted on the bar 8 adjacent to one end thereof and a plate l is connected on the spacin, oeing suHiciently thick that the plate l0 is he d out of contact with the flanges and 6 is moved inwardly to the trackway edges thereof entirely coni anges 5 and 6. gri mounted on suitable bearings the member 1l normally resiliently pressed against the upper port' ture might he mail box As isg block 9, the block `sol titted to be held by the spring clip in substantially the relation shovvn by the dotted lines of 'a To preclude the possibility ot the link 1T engaging with the mail matter and interfering with the proper Working oli the device in either the opening; or the closing` otthe door, it is preerab e that the bracket l5 be so constructed that the link 1T ivill be thrown over somewhat Jfrom the slide bar S. vWhen the mail matter is to be held and to the postman for collection, it vvill be 1fitted in the clip at tie outer end of the slide bar when the door 3 is open and then by' closing` movement ot the door 3 suilicient movement will be imparted to the slide b 8 through the link 17 that this slide l to the trackn'ay to carry matter to be entirely within the box and the closing o' the door will close the box against unauthorized removal ot the mail matter. As the door 23 of the box is opened by the postman, a reverse action oll the parts takes place and in consequence the slide bar S is moved out to display the mail mattei' held by the clip and to permit ready removal thereof.
While 1 have herein shoivn and described only one specific form o' the device, it Wi be understood that changes and modifications might be resorted to in the various parts and in the arrangement ot the same without departing,` from the spirit and scope ot my invention, and hence 1 do not wish to be limited to the exact disclosures but only to such points as may be set forth in the claims.
1 claim:
1. An attachment for mail boxes having a hinged door for closing the same comprising a slide bar, a trackivay to be secure to the inner ivall ot the body of the box to support the slide bar and permit movement ot the same to extend from the box, means carried by said slide bar to hold mail matter, and a connection Jfrom said slide bar to the door arranged to impart extension Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the movement to said slide bar as the .door is opened.
Q. An attachment for mail boxes comprising` a trackway to be secured upon the inner' wall of the body of said box, a slide bar mounted in said trackvvay, a letter holding clip carried by the outer end ot said slide bar, a bracket to be connected Wit the door of the box, and a link connecte betvveen said bracket and the slide bar to impart movement to the slide bar as the door is opened and closed.
3. An attachment for use in connection with mail boxes having` the door thereo'l hinged, comprising a trackvvay to be secured to the inner null of the body of the box 'adyiacent to the door and with one end opening' in proximity to the opening to be close by the door, a slide bar mounted in said trackivay, a letter holding clip mounted on the outer end or' said slide bar, a bearing bracket to be secured to the inner side oit' the door, a bearing bracket mounted on the slide bar, and a link connected between said bearing brackets to cause. movement to be imparted to the slide bar as the door is opened and closed.
4. ln combination with a mail box haying,` a door hinged at one end thereof` a track ivay mounted on one of the inner side walls of the body ot the box, a slide bar mounted in said track ivay to be capable o movement therein to lextend from the box when the door is open, holding clip mounted on the outer end ot said slide bar to receive and hold mail matter, a bearingbracket secured on the innerv side of the door, and a link connected between sai bearing; bracket and the slide bar to move the slide bar Within the track Way as the door is opened and closed. f
1n testimony whereof l t iiix my signature in presence o tivo witnesses.
