To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OHN F. HEMEN\VAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pressure-Roll Releases for Clothes-Vringers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in pressure roll release for clothes wringers, the object being to provide exceedingly simple and cheap means for releasing the pressure on the pressure rolls instantaneously in case of a foreign object being drawn between the pressure rolls thereof. I

Another object of my invention is to provide a construction of release which can be readily placed in position upon any of the well known form of wringers now in use so as to holdthe movably mounted top bar in position within the wringer frame in such amanner that the top bar can be quickly released in order to allow the same to move vertically so as to release the pressure means.

Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.

In the drawing, 1 indicates a wringer frame having slotted side bars 2 in which are mounted bearings carrying shafts 'provided with pressure rolls'3 and 4, the upper bearings being provided with spring supports on which are mounted pressure springs 5 which are engaged by bearing plates 6 carried by pressure bar 7.

slidably mounted within the upper portions of the slotted side bars 2 is a top bar 8 which is provided with threaded boxes carrying pressure screws 9 adapted to engage the bearing plates 6 of the pressure bars 7 so as to adjust the pressure on the pressure rolls 3 and 4, the above description being given so that the operation of my improved construction of release to a wringer of this character can be clearly understood.

Secured to the outer faces of the side bar 2 are plates 10 which are provided with substantially inverted T-shaped slots 11. into which are adapted toextend retaining bars 12 which are slidably mounted in guideways 13 secured to the under side of the top bar 8, said retaining bars being preferably provided with substantially T-shaped ends 11 formed by reducing the bars upon opposite sides. The bars 12 are provided with slots 15 through which the pressure screws 9 pass. \Vhen the bars are in position as shown in Fig. 1, the enlarged portions are in position within the enlarged portions of the T-shaped slots 11 of the plates 10 so as to hold the top bar in predetermined position within the wringer frame. v

The inner ends of the releasing bars 12 are reduced to form apertured lugs 16, in which the end links of a chain 17 are pivotally mounted so as to connect the two releasing bars by a flexible connection.

The top bar 8 is provided with a centrally disposed bore 18 in which the shank 19 of a push button 20 is slidably mounted, said push button being preferably provided with a washer 21 at its lower end under the top bar 8 for holding the same in position therein. Surrounding the shank 19 of the push button 20 above the top bar is a coil spring 22 for normally holding the same in raised position as shown in Fig. 1.

The push button is disposed over the central portion of the chain 17 so that when the same is forced downwardly, the chain will be moved into the position as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 so as to draw the releasing bars inwardly toward each other which brings the reduced portions of the T-shaped ends into alinement with the reduced portions of the slots 11 of the plates 10 which allows the top bar to move vertically and releases the pressure means.

In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the lower end of the shank of the push button 23 is flattened and an aperture formed therein so as to receive the chain. the enlarged portion forming a stop for limiting the upward movement of the push button. and it will be seen that by this construction the flexible connecting member for the releasing bars 12 is connected tolthe push button so as to move therewith in either direction.

In the operation of the release as herein shown and described, when it is desired to instantaneously release the pressure on the pressure rolls in case of an accident, the push button is forced downward so as to force the chain connecting the releasing bars downwardly so that the same assumes the arc of a circle and draws the releasing bars toward each other so as to bring the reduced portions of the heads in alineme-nt with the reduced portions of the slots of the keepers on the side bars of the frame and allows the top bar to move vertically.

' I claim:

1. A clothes wringer, comprising a frame having pressure rolls and pressure means for said rolls mounted therein, a top bar movably mounted in said frame, means for adjusting said pressure means, retaining bars for holding said top bar in predetermined position within said frame, a flexible connection between said retaining bars, and a member slidably mounted within the top bar engaging said flexible connection for actuating said retaining bars to release said pressure means.

2. A clothes wringer, comprising a frame having pressure rolls and pressure means for said rolls mounted therein, a top bar movaloly mounted in said frame having means for adjusting said pressure means, plates carried by the side bars of said frame provided with inverted T-shaped slots, retaining bars slidably carried by the top bar having substantially T-shaped ends cooperating with the T-shaped slots of said plates, a link member connecting said retaining bars, and a push button slidably mounted in said top bar engaging said link member for moving said retaining bars in position to release said top bar.

3. A clothes wringer, comprising a frame having pressure rolls and pressure means for said rolls mounted therein, a top barmovably mounted in said frame, retaining bars carried by said top bar for holding said top bar in predetermined position within said frame, a chain connecting said retaining bars. and a push button slidably mounted in said top bar engaging said chain for drawing said retaining bars toward each other for allowing said' top bar to move vertically within said frame. V

4. A clothes wringer, con'iprising a frame having pressure rolls and pressure means for said rolls mounted therein, a top bar movably mounted in said frame having means for adjusting said pressure means, keepers carried by the side bars of said frame, retaining bars slidably mounted on the under side of said top bar engaging said keepers, a chain connecting the inner ends of said retaining bars, and a spring returned push button slidably mounted in said top bar having a'connection with said chain for forcing said chain downwardly to draw said retaining bars toward each other in position to allow said top bar to move a predetermined distance within said frame.

A clothes wringer, comprising a frame having pressure rolls and pressure means for said rolls mounted therein, a top bar movably mounted in said frame, plates secured to the side bars of said frame having substantially inverted T-shaped slots, releasing bars slidably mounted on the under side of said top bar having substantially T-shaped ends cooperating with the T-shaped slots for holding and releasing said top bar, a chain connecting the inner ends of said releasing bars, and a push button slidably mounted in said top bar over said chain for forcing said chain downwardly to move said releasing bars in position to allow said top bar to move vertically a predetermined distance within said frame.

A clothes wringer, comprising a frame having pressure rolls and' pressure means for said rolls mounted therein, a top bar movably mounted in said frame, guide members carried by said top bar, keepers carried by the side bars. releasing bars slidably mounted in said guide members cooperating with ;said keepers for holding said top bar in predetermined position within said frame and for limiting the upward movement of said top bar when released, a chain connecting the inner ends of said releasing bars, a push button slidably mounted in said top bar having a connection with said chain for moving said releasing bars in respect to said keepers to release aid top bar, and a spring surrounding said push button above said top bar for returning the same to normal position.
