Specification of Letters Patent.

lie it known that 1, MAX Boon, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Detroit, Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tops for Vehicles and the like, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to improvements in tops, hoods or covers designed for use on vehicles of any kind, n'iotor-hoats, etc., and has for its object to provide an extremely simple and ellicient arrangement of bllG'vllOWS or how standards and links or levers, whereby a uniform movement of the front and intermediate bows will be secured and the top be capable of being extended or collapsed by a single operator and this without allowing it to drop down to disturb the occupants of the vehicle.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention includes the novel features of construction and arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and particularly defined by the appended claims.
Several embodiments of my invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation of a top embodying my construction.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a modified form.
In these drawings, the figures being all in side elevation, it will be understood that only the standards, bow arms, and links or levers on one side will appear, but said parts will be duplicated on the opposite side and be hidden by the parts appearing in the drawings.
Referring by reference characters to these drawings, I provide on each side of the vehicle a side arm or standard 1 adapted to be pivotally connected at its lower end with the body in the usual or any desired manner. A rear bow, indicated at 2, is also adapted to have its arms pivotally connected with the body, conveniently by means of angular offset portions 1*, at the lower ends of the standards 1. A bow 3 has its side arms pivotally connected to the standards 1 at a suitable distance from the upper ends thereof, as indicated at 3 4 designates the usual outrigger bow, which I have shown connected to the standard by the two pairs of links 5 and 6. to the rear end of the corresponding arm of the how 4 by a stop hinge t and at its rear end to the standard by a pivot 5, and each link 5 has an extension 5" which is connected by a link 7 with the corresponding arm of the how 3. The links (3 connect at their forward ends to the side arms of the how 4 and in advance of the stop hinges r by pivots 6 and at their rear ends to the standards 1 above the pivots 5.
If it be desired to support the top covering, which is indicated at 12, between the how 3 and the outrigger how 4, I may provide a front supplemental how 9, which may have its arms pivoted to the links 5 at their lower ends, as indicated at 9, and intermediately connected by a pin and slot connection to the links 6, as indicated at 9. Instead. of having the extension which connects with the how 3 on the lower links 5, I may, if desired, place this extension on the upper link, as indicated at 5 in Fig. 2. By the arrangement shown in either of the aforesaid figures, I am enabled to provide a top in which the standards 1 may incline forwardly to a material degree which is advantageous, and yet have the covering ma terial 8 supported therefrom at a position materially in rear of the point where it would be supported were the standards 1 formed as integral parts of or continuations of the main bow, as has heretofore been customary, so far as I am aware. At the same time the offset portions of the forwardly extending links with their link connections to the how 3, constituting in effect bell crank levers, cause the lock joints to break downwardly and the outrigger bow 4; and auxiliary how 9 to move rearwardly without dropping down upon the heads of the occupants of the vehicle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a vehicle top, a pair of standards adapted for pivotal connection with the vehicle body and having free upper ends, a cover supporting bow having its arms pivotally connected with said standards near their upper ends, an outrigger bow, a pair of links pivotally connected respectively to the arms of the outrigger bow and to said standards, a second pair of links pivotally connected tothe arms of the outrigger bow in advance of their rear ends and to said standards above the pivots of said first HHIIIHI links, oln'. of mid pairs of links inning extensions :unl IHUHIIH vonneoting Hili l uxlonnions with said (over supporting how.
