GABTON-UPSETTING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, CARL BECKM'ANN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Carton-Upsetting Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a device for upsetting or opening cartons preparatory to the receiving of the contents of the carton and constituting an essential part of a cartoning machine.
The invention has for its general objects to provide a device of the character referred to which is reliable and eficient in use, and so designed as to operate at a comparatively high speed.
A more specific object of the invention is the provision of a device of sim lo and novel construction for the purpose 0 successively feeding cartons in flat form from a hopper, opening or upsetting the cartons to receive its contents, and delivering the carton to a filling, closing and sealing mechanism, the opening or upsetting being accomplished by a plurality of fingers which, in closing, cause the carton to open and then close on the other diagonal from that on which they are initially folded or closed, and while held closed by the fingers, the carton is taken up by coacting rolls, which apply pressure in such a manner that when the carton passes from the rolls it automatically opens out into upset form, with the flaps open, so that the carton can be filled, closed and sealed by suitable mechanism.
With such objects in view, and others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises various novel features of construction and arrangement of arts which will be set forth with particularity in the following description and claims appended hereto.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate one embodiment of the invention and wherein similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views,

Fig. 5 is a perspective view of an upset carton.
Referring to the drawing, A designates a hopper or magazine which is composed of suitably arranged upright members 1 in which cartons as they are received in flat condition from the carton-making machine are placed in a pile, the cartons being ar ranged in a horizontal plane one on top of another. The pile of cartons B is supported on a horizontal reciprocatory plunger 2 which has a forward feeding portion 3 at a lower level than the pile-supporting portion 4, and between these two portions is a shoulder 5 which engages the rear edge of the lowermost carton when the follower plate is fully retracted, so that this shoulder will feed the carton forwardly from under the hopper or magazine. The plunger or follower 2 is operated by any suitable means and 1n timed relation to the other parts of the upsetting mechanism. \Vhen a carton is fed forwardly a pair of fingers or pins 6 enter the ends of the carton, which latter slightly springs open, due to the resiliency of the material. These pins move inwardly and outwardly by suitable actuating means and in proper relation to the movement of the plunger 2. Disposed forwardly of the plunger 2 aresets of pairs of fingers 7 fulcrumed on a horizontal shaft 8, and these fingers swing upwardly toward each other from the open position shown in Fig. 3 to the closed position shown in Fig. 4, and thereby grip the carton B and cooperate with the restraining fingers 6 to cause the carton to open from a flat horizontal position, and then close in a vertical position. This causes th breaking or flexing-of the carton at the folds b and b, givin the said folds the same flexibility as the f0 ds 6 and 6 which are flexed or strained in the folding of the carton by the carton making machine. Just prior to the time the carton is flattened out by the closing of the jaws, as in Fig. 4, the fingers 6 are withdrawn so that the carton can be fed upwardly between a pair of coacting rolls 9, between which the carton is forced during the last part of the flattening out movement. After the carton passes between the rolls it automatically opens up into square or rectangular form and remains in this position, causing creases or folds Z), b, 6 b of the same tension or flexibility. The fingers 7 are opened and closed by a lazy tongs arrangement 10 receiving motion from a reciprocatory rod or bar 11 which Operates in timed relation to the plunger 2 and the holding fingers 6. are set up or opened, are fed progressively to the right by a reciprocatory feeder in the form of a the left roll 9. This bar is supported at each end by an arm 13 which is fastened to a horizontal reciprocatorylink 14 actuated by an oscillating lever 15. The feeder bar 12 makes a-stroke exceeding-the width of the upset carton, so that each time a carton is upset it is fed forwardly to make place for the next carton. In this manner the cartons are successively fed to the filling, closing and sealing mechanisms of a cartoning machine.
From the foregoingdescription taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and method 'of operation will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have de scribed the principle of operation, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made when desired as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A carton upsetting device comprising means for feeding a flat, folded carton, fingers movable into and out of the ends of the folded carton, and fingers movable toward each other and arranged to engage externally the carton at its front and rear folded edges and apply pressure to open and fold the carton flat on its other folds. v
2. A carton upsetting device comp-rising means for feeding a flat, folded carton, fingers movable into and out of the ends of the folded carton, fingers movable toward each other and arranged to engage externally the carton at its front and rear folded edges and apply pressure to open and fold the carton fiat on its other folds and in a plane at right-angles to the plane of the initial feeding movement the carton, and rotating rolls between which the carton passes from the last-mentioned fingers, whereby the car ton will automatically open up in square or rectangular form after passing through the rolls.
3. A carton upsetting device comprising means for feeding a fiat folded carton,
means for gripping the carton and progressively opening and folding the same fiat on the other diagonal from that on which. it is The cartons, after they bar 12 normally disposed above initially folded, and rotating rolls between I which the carton passes to cause all the folds to have the same tension, whereby the carton will automatically open in square or rectangular form after passing the rolls, the axes of the rolls lying in a plane parallel to the plane of the initial feeding movement of the carton.
4. An upsetting device comprising means for feeding a fiat folded carton in its own plane, fingers movable toward each other and into the opposite ends of the carton, swinglng vfingers arranged to en age the edges of the flat cartons while the rst-mentioned fingers are engaged therewith, whereby the carton is folded flat in a plane at right-angles to its initial plane, and rolls arranged to receive the carton and convey it away from the last-mentioned fingers, the axis on which the swinging fingers swing lying in a plane passing between the'rolls and in which the first-mentioned fingers lie.
5. A carton upsetting device comprising sets of swinging fingers which move open and closed, means for feeding a carton to the fingers when in open position and holding the cartons centrally with respect to the fingers, means for moving the fingers toward each other while engaged with the opposite folded edges of the carton to progressively open and fold the carton on the other opposite folds, and rolls arranged adjacent the fingers in such position carton will automatically pass to the rolls as the fingers close 'on the carton.

- 7. A carton upsetting device comprising a pair of hingedly connected upsetting elements, a lazy tongs means for opening and closing the fingers, and rolls disposed in cooperative relation with the fingers for feeding away the upset carton from the fingers.
