DOOR-OPENING DEVICE.
Application filed August 24, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIABI R. Router, a citizen of the United States, residing at Iota, in the county of Allen and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Door-Opening Device, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and comparatively inexpensive door opening device particularly adapted for use in connection with screen doors whereby the same may be opened by foot power when, as with waiters in hotels, etc., the hands are otherwise occupied.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is an elevation of a device embodying the present invention applied in 01)- erative position to a door.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same showing the positions of the parts in dotted lines when the door is partly open.
Fig. 3 is a detail view of the foot bracket or guide.
The device consists essentially of a lever 10 having a short arm 11 extending at an obtuse angle from its long arm and with which is connected an operating element, in this instance consisting of a foot lever or pedal 12, said lever 10 being fulcrumed as at 13in a suitable supporting bracket 14 on the door casing, and the long arm thereof being fitted slidably in an upwardly projecting guide 15 secured to the door. A spring 16 is interposed between the guide 15 and a fixed shoulder 17 on the lever, the parts being so positioned that as the door swings toward its open position the distance between the guide 15 and the fulcrum of the lever will be shortened to thereby compress the spring 16, whereupon, when the door is released the ex pansion of the spring will eifect the closing thereof.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 13, 1917.
Serial No. 116,659.
The connections between the operating lever and the foot pedal may consist of the wires or rods 18 and 19 and the interposed bell, crank lever 20. The upper rod 18 extends behind the guide 15 and lever 10 and is connected to the lever arm 11.
The foot pedal is preferably fulcrumed as. at 21 in a bracket 22 having parallel sides between which the pedal is free to swing.
Preferably the bracket upon which the operating lever is mounted consists of a base plate 22 from which project parallel cars 23, spacers or washers 24; being intcrposer between said ears and the lever through which the pivot pin or bolt 13 projects.
Moreover it should be noted that if the door is opened far enough to carry the guide 15 beyond a plane perpendicular to the normal plane of the door and passing through the pivot 13, the tendency of the spring 16 will be to hold the door open, while permitting it to be closed simply by swinging it toward its closed position beyond the said perpendicular plane in the oppositeor closing direction.
What is claimed is A door operating device embodying a bracket attachable to a door casing, a lever fulcrumed to said bracket and having a long arm and a short arm extending at an obtuse angle therefrom, anupwardly projecting guide attachable to a door, said long arm being slidable through the guide, said long arm having a shoulder, a spring upon said long arm between said shoulder and guide for closing the door, and operating means including a rod extending behind said guide and lever and connected to the short arm of the lever.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
