STATIONARY WASHSTAND.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented lVIar. 13, 1917.
Application filed February 4, 1914. Serial N 0. 816,407.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN P. GAYLORD, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stationary Washstands; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.
lily invention relates to stationary wash stands, with reference more particularly to the type of device that is employed in hotels and other public places where it is desirable to provide a series of basins to accommodate a number of people at one time, and it is my purpose to afford a construction that can be used in this manner, and will occupy a minimum amount of floor space, while at the same time affording ample room for the persons using the stand. A further purpose of my invention is to provide a sanitary device, whereby the basin is selfcleaning in its operation, and fresh clean water is furnished continuously at a point most convenient to the user. A further object of my invention resides in providing a construction that readily enables the flow of water to be controlled by foot instead of by hand, as in the usual stationary wash basin, thus leaving the hands free. To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claim at the end of the specification.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a basin and standard constructed in accord ance with my invention, and
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 11*1l of Fig. 1.
Similar reference numerals throughout the several figures indicate the same parts.
In the present embodiment of my invention A designates inlet pipes leading to the bottom of the basin for conducting hot and thus enabling one to cold water, which is discharged upwardly from the bottom after the manner of a small spout. A is a passage formed at one side, and connecting the hollow standard A with the discharge opening A, and with the overflow opening A The hollow standard A is connected with a. hollow base portion C to which leads a waste pipe connection C Each inlet port is controlled by a spring actuated valve C adapted to be operated in a manner which I will now describe, C is an air chamber connected with the inlet passages C by means of openings C The valves C are normally held closed by means of springs C and are adapted to be opened by foot operated devices in the following manner.
Connected to each valve stem is a lever D which is loosely pivoted at D 'and connected at its opposite end by means of a pin D with a treadle or other suitable foot engaging device D*. It will be observed that the valve operating instrumentalities are arranged so that the foot engaging devices are adjacent or in juxtaposition to each other, control both hot and cold water at the same time, and to obtain a supply of both simultaneously if desired.
By having the water inlets disposed at the bottom of each basin and discharging in a vertical direction, there is a constant supply of fresh clean water at a point most convenient to the hands of the user, and in the preferred manner of using the device there is a'continual discharge at A which carries off all of the dirt and grease, and maintains the basin in a clean state constantly. The structure affords an extremely compact and eflicient device for the purposes contemplated, and one which is particularly efiicient in places where the space available must be utilized to the greatest possible extent, without detracting from convenience and comfort in the use of the apparatus.
I claim as my invention:
The combination with a stationary wash basin having a discharge opening above the bottom and a passage leading from said opening to a point below the bottom, of a hollow standard supporting the basin and constituting a discharge with which the aforesaid passage communicates, an inlet pipe arranged Within said standard and extending to the bottom of the basin so as to direct a flow of Water upwardly from the bottom in a vertical direction, a Valve controlling the inlet pipe and foot operated means at the base of said standard cooperating With said valve. i
EDWIN P. GAYLORD.
