BLADE-SHARPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 6, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN J. NASIEF, a subject of the Sultan of Turkey, residing at Room 502, Brooklyn Young Mens Christian Association, 'Hanson Place, Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lZdade-Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to blade sharpening apparatus and more particularly to the type in which the blade-holder and the sharpening element have a relative movement in an endless path, an object of this invention being to so arrange the bladeholder that it holds the blade at such an angle to the path of movement that all portions of the edge of the blade are wiped diagonally by the sharpening element thus insuring the best sharpening action. Another object of the invention is to provide in a blade sharpening apparatus of the'type mentioned, means for automatically reversing the position of the blade holder so that both edges of a blade in the holder may be presented to the sharpening surface. An other object of the invention is to provide a construction which is inexpensive to manufacture, simple in operation and not liable to get out of order. Q
To these and other ends, the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts all of which will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of a blade sharpening apparatus embodying the present imp rovement Fig. 2 is a View in side elevation of the same apparatus;
Fig. 3 is a transverse central sectional view; Fig. 4 is a partial section on the line a-a of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a section on the line b?) of Fig. 3;
Fig. 6 is a detail top plan of the blade holder support;
Fig. 7 is an end view of the same;
Fig. 8 is a top plan view of the bladeholder; and
Fig. 9 is an enlarged cross-section of the blade-holder on the line 0-0 of Fig. 8.
In the present embodiment of the invention the blade travels in an endless path over the sharpening element which is preferably in the form of a fiat annular piece of leather 1 secured tov a base 2 which has an upwardly-extending overhanging flange 3 at its periphery. A bail or handle 4 is pivoted in straps 5 struck up from the base 2, said handle serving to support the sharpening element on the hand of the user.
.Mounted to move in an endless path over the sharpening surface 1 is a carrier 6 formed from a single piece of sheet material bent into inverted U-shape and having a horizontally presented portion 6 at one end secured to the supporting-plate 2 by a pivot member 7. The other end of the carrier may be turned outwardly at 8 in order to guide the outer end of the carrier. A handle 9 mayproject upwardly from the carrier for effecting the movement of the latger relatively to the blade-sharpening surace. w
In order to support the blade-holder, to be I described, for movement toward and from the sharpening surface 1, a shaft 10 may connect the arms of the U-shaped portion of the carrier so as to extend parallelwith the sharpening surface. On this shaft is arranged an oscillatory member 12, the latter being preferably formed of a single piece of material bent to provide, at opposite ends, two laterally-extending bearing portions 13 and 14 which surround the shaft 10. Also extending from the I oscillatory member is a sleeve 15 in which the bearing member 16 of the blade-holder 17 turns. The bearing member is provided with an annular groove 18 forming an annular shoulder 19 adapted'to be engaged by spring tongues 20 on the sleeve 15 for the purpose of holding the bearing 16 within the sleeve 15.
The blade-holder preferably embodies two plates 21 and 22 having parallel extending portions24 for cooperating with opposite sides of a blade 00, the portions of the plates in rear of the portion 2 1 being spaced apart to provide a pocketfor receiving an enlargement on the rear edge of the razor blade. The plate 22 is provided with a rearwardlyextending flange 26 which is secured to the head 27 of the bearing 16. The flange 26 has recesses 25 at opposite sides for receiving lugs 29 on the plate 21 in order that the plate 21 may be moved relatively to the plate 22. U-shaped springs 23 are also received within the recesses 25 and engage both plates 21 and 22 to hold the latter toward each other for the purpose of clamping the portions 2% against opposite faces of the blade :0. A finger piece 28 maybe extended from the plate 21 for the purpose of moving the latter away from the plate 22.
In order that the blade-holder may be rotated automatically about an axis extending transversely of the edge of the blade in the holder, there may be provided a roller .or other device 30, preferably journaled at its ends in the arms of the carrier .6 and having a gear portion 31 thereon adapted to cooperate with the gear portion 32 .on the arm 1% of the oscillatory member. By this arrangement when the carrier is moved in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 1, the roller tends to throw the blade-holder downwardly to hold the edge of a blade against the sharpening surface, but when the carrier is moved in the opposite direction, the roller 30 by its frictional engagement with the sharpening surface is given a slight turn and transmits its movement to the oscillatory member thereby raising the blade-holder. On the upward movement of the blade-h lder, one of the shoulders or projections 33 which are formed on opposite sides of the axis of the blade-holder is engaged by the device 34: in the form of a projection on the carrier 6. By this engagement, the blade-hQlder is turned on its bearings 16 so that when the carrier is again moved in the first direction, the blade-holder will .be thrown downwardly to bring the opposite side of the blade edge ifnto engagement with the sharpening surace.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that there has been provided a construction in which arelative movement takes place between a blade-holder and a sharpening .element in an endless path, the blade-holder being arranged at such an angle to the path of movement that all portions of the bladeedge are wiped diagonally by the sharpening surface. This is due in the present embodiment to the fact that the blade travels about an axis normal to the plane of the sharpening surface and has all portions of its edge lying at an angle to the tan ent .,of any circle concentric with the turn ng axis and intersecting the blade-edge, said tangent being drawn from the point of intersection. In this instance also the turning axis of the blade which lies transversely of the blade edge, is at an angle other than a right angle to the turning axis of the oscillatory member.
The apparatus also provides for turning the blade-holder about an axis extending transversely of the cutting edge of a blade in the holder, so that a relative lIlOXQGIIlGIll? between the blade-holder and the sharpening element can take place in an endless path.
There has also been provided an inexpensive structure .which has simple operations for producing the above result.
