Description
Patented Dec.12, 1871.
w i r/w UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
NATHAN D. MOREY, OF SARATOGA SPRINGS, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FUR PRESSING AND FINISHING LEATHER, SKINS, &.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,727, dated December 12, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHAN D. MOREY, ot Saratoga Springs, Saratoga county, inthe State of New York, have invented a Machine for Pressing and Finishing Leather; and I do hereby declare the Jfollowing to be a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompan ying drawing forming part of this specilication.
The nature or essence ot' my invention consists in a pair of elastic rollers, between which the skin is passed, and thus tightly pressed to remove the water, and also give the skin a better finish; second, of a pair of secondary rollers, in order to stretch the skin as it is pressed; and, also, in a new arrangement of devices for operating the above-mentioned rollers and in other improvements.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a vertical section of my machine. Fig 2 is a top view of the same.
The frame A maybe of any suitable form with a table, B, over which the skin is to be spreadin stretching and pressiugthe same. On this frame are two rollers, C and D, which should be covered with rubber, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. l, so as to give them an elastic surface. These rollers may have adjustable bearings with adjusting-screws E for regulating the distance between the rollers. The table B is provided with aroller, F, and the swinging board G carries a corresponding roller, H. The skin is placed between the two rollers H and F as smoothly as convenient, leaving one end lying on the table B, and reaching over to be caught by the two rollers G and D. Now, these rollers U and D are set in revolution, slowly drawing the skin through between them, thus pressing out the water. At the same time the board Gr is pressed toward the roller F, so as to stretch the skin and spread the latter smoothly upon the table B asitis drawn through the elastic rollers C and D. The shafts of' the rollers (l D are provided with suitable gear-wheels and pinion l l and K K for giving motion thereto.
By practical experiment l nd that skins when pressed in the above-described machine will dry in one-fourth ot' the time usually required, and that they have a better finish, the grain not being injured as by the present method of using sleekers; therefore, my iinishing improves the quality ofthe skins and increases their value.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. The swinging board G and roller H, in combination with table B and roller F, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination of swinging' board G and table B with the stretching-rollers H F and pressingerollers (l D, as and for the purposes specified.
NATHAN D. MOREY.
