Description
E. P. CA LKINS. SLIDING DOOR FASTENER. APPLICATION FILED NOV- 24. I915.
M M \f Patented Feb. 20,1917.
- fnvenzan' .1 am Pia/$1 215 EDWARD JP. CALKINS, OF ST. PAUL, M .v
ermine-noon rns'rnnna.
Application filed November as, 1915. Serial 1%.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, EDWARD P. CALKINs, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sliding-Door Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in door fasteners, and more particularly, although not exclusively is adapted for use for locking mail car doors closed. The con struction provided prevents the parts of the fastener when in locked or unlocked position from jarring respectively into unlockedor locked position The construction provided further, is strong, durable and simple, and is adapted to draw the parts with which it cooperates into tightly closed position.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation showing my improved fastener applied to a door and door casing; Fig. 2 is a section taken upon the line X--X of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the parts of my invention when in partly unlocked position, and Fig. 4 is a section taken upon the line Y-Y of Fig. 2.
In the drawing A represents a detail of a door frame or j amb and B a detail of a door, the latter being of usual sliding type such for instance as is commonly employed for closing mail cars. 2 indicates a keeper in the form of a plate fastened upon'theside of the door frame such as by screws 3 and having a stud 4.. 5 is a locking member in the form of a Hat plate or arm having a finger piece resembling a hook 6 on its outer end and a cam receiving opening 7 on its inner end. 8 is a hand operable lever having a cam 9 on its inner surface revoluble in said cam receiving opening 7, said looking member thereby being adapted to be mounted upon said cam. 10 is a holder in the form of a plate secured on the side of the door B, such as by screws 11, said plate being provided with an out and upturned support 12. Passing through said support and into the back of said holder is a shaft or pin 13 upon which is journaled the lever 8 with said eccentric 9 disposed eccentrically to its axis. When the lever 8 is turned down into horizontal position the eccentric 9 draws the finger piece 6 tightly engaged over the stud 4C and the locking member is prevented from jarring loose and swinging up into unlocking position unintentionally.
Specification of Letters ratent.
Felipe 2 :99 iiiym $8,211.
The lever 8 is formed with a shoulder 14, which strikes against a. stop pin 15 on the side of' the locking member when the lever 8 is'turned down, thereby supporting the lever in looking position. To release the finger piece into disengaging position from the keeper stud, the lever 8 is swung up into substantially vertical position by hand until another stop shoulder 16 strikes against the pin'l5. When the parts are in this latter position the locking member may be swung up by engaging by hand the button or stud 17 on the free end of the locking member. When the locking member is raised in this in Fig. 4, the lever 8 is turned down into substantially horizontal position by the pin 15 engaging the shoulder 16 on said lever. When the locking member is raised in this latter position the cam 9 prevents the look ing member from returning into horizontal position unless the lever the position illustrated in Fig. 3. en said lever is raised into the position illustrated in Fig. 3, the locking member is turned downwardly into the position illustrated in Fig. 3 until the finger piece passes over the keeper stud 4 into position to be drawn horizontally and tightly into engagement with the latter by turning the handle 8 down into the position illustrated in Fig. 1.
In accordance with the patent statutes I have described the principles of operation of my invention, together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof, but I desire to have it understood that the construction shown is only illustrative and that the invention can be carried out by other means andapplied to uses other than those above set forth within the scope of the following claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
l. A fastener comprising, in combination with two parts to be locked together, a keeper stud secured to one of said parts, and a locking member secured to the other of said parts, said member consisting of a latch member having a hook adapted to engage said stud and a lever'having a cam connection with said latch member adapted to move said latch into partially unlocked position with respect to said stud, and a button secured to said latch member by which 8 is swung up into- .tion with said latch,
'said latch is moved am; completely unlocked position.
2. A fastener'comprising, in combination with two parts to be locked together, a keeper stud secured to one of said parts, and a locking member secured to the other of said psi-ti, said member consisting of a latch mem aving a hook adapted to engage said stud and a lever having a cam connecsaid lever being adapted for movement m said latch into partially unlocked position I and in an opposite direction to move the 3. A fastener comprising,in combination one direction to move with two parts to be locked together, a keeper stud secured to one of said parts and a locking member secured to the other of said parts, said member consistin of a latch member provided with a pin an having a bayonet hook adapted to engage said stud and a lever having a cam connection with said latch member adapted to. move said latch in position to be partially released from said stud, and a button secured to said latch member by which said latch may be completely released from said stud, said lever having a shoulder adapted to engage said pin to return said latch into positzion to be locked about said stud.
- In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
EDWARD P. QALKINS!
