RAZOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 20, 19171.
Application filed May 18, 1915. Serial No. 28,879.
1 b all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS WATSON, a citizen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and resident lately of 7 New Mill road, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland, and now of 46 St. Andrew street, Kilmarnock aforesaid, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Razors, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to razor safety devices of the type comprising a sheath or guard adapted to be removably attached to the blade of anordinary razor and means whereby same can be adjusted.
According-to the present invention the sheath or guard is adapted to be attached to the razor blade by means of a separate resilient grip or holder which is so shaped and arranged as to embrace the back of the razor blade, and this grip is connected with the sheath or guard by screw or equivalent means so as to be adjustable. If desired springs or the like may be interposed between the grip and'the sheath or guard.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood I have hereunto appended an explanatory drawing whereon I have shown, by way of example, one mode of carrying out the invention.
' On the drawings Figure -1 isa side elevation showing the guard fitted on a razor.
Fig. 2 is an end view looking from the left hand side of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing the guard in section. v
The sheath or guard a, as shown, may be made of any suitable material, preferably aluminium, and is rounded at its back part a and may extend downward so as to form converging sides a, (1 which embrace the razor blade 6 and cover both sides thereof to a line near the cutting edge. The guard is secured in position on the razor by means of an elongated grip c, of a somewhat U formation with converging sides, and which is adapted to grasp and hold the back edge of the razor. This grip is made of spring metal and is attached to the guard by means of two screw bolts d, 6, having nuts 7 thereon, and there is interposed, between the interior surface of the back of the guard at and the spring 0, two spiral springs g, g, which surround the bolts and normally press the guard upward and away from the spring grip 0.
The spring action of the grip 0 is suflicient to enable'it to readily adjust itself to a thick or thin backed razor and to hold firmly in place thereon. By means of the screws 03, e, and nuts 7 the guard can be adjusted to exactly the distance required from the cutting edge of the razor blade. The guard is simply slipped on to the razor blade, the spring 0 sliding along the back of the blade.
This guard when applied to an ordinary razor, enables the latter to be used in the same manner as a safety razor and there is no danger of cutting the face of the user.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is An attachment for razors comprising a guard having resilient arms adapted to substantially cover the side faces of a razor blade, the upper edge of said guard being spaced from the upper edge of said razor blade, a gripping member comprising a sheet of resilient material having arms adapted to grasp the upper edge of the razor blade, screw threaded members extending through the gripping member and extending through openings in the guard member, a coiled spring housing each of the screw threaded members and engaging the gripping member for holding the gripping member and guard member in spaced relation with each other, means on one end of the screw threaded means for tensioning the springs whereby the guard member is adjusted with relation to the cutting edge of the razor blade.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
