To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, Lnwrs L. MOORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Massillon, county of Stark, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Fasteners, of whic the following is a specification.
rEhe invention relates to improvements in garment fasteners for use in supporting one garment by means of another, as for instance for supporting hose by means of an adjacent underoarment; and the objects of the invention are to provide a fastener which will firmly grip and hold the garments to be fastened without the use of pins, teeth or rough edges which will perforate, wear and tear the same; which may be readily and conveniently applied in use; and which is compact, and simple in construction and therefore cheap to manufacture.
The objects of the invention thus set forth in general terms are attained by means of a corrugated plate of suitable size having clamping -means on each side thereof non mally lying within the corrugations of the plate and adapted to grip the respective garments and firmly bind them against the plate.
A preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in which-A Figure 1 is a perspective view of the fastener; Fig. 9., a side elevation with the clamping means in inoperative position; Fig. 3, a central sectional view of the fastener attached to a garment to be supported; Fig. 4, a similar view, with the supported and supporting garments attached; Fig. 5, a sectional view on line 5,5, Fig. 1; Fig. 6, a sectional view on line 6 6, Fig. 1; Fig. 7 a plan view of a blank sheet of metal from which the corrugated base plate is formed; and Fig. 8, a, view similar to Fig. 3, but showing a modified form of the fastener.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the drawings.
The base plate 1 of the fastener is formed from ablank of sheet metal 1a of suitable size and thickness, and is corrugated to form a pair of grooves 2 in one side, which for convenience, may be termed the outer side, ard a single groove 3 in its other or ,inner s1 e.
A wire clamping pin 4 is pivotally mounted on the inner side of the plate 1 near one end thereof, and for this purpose a bearing stud is struc-k up from the plate in the groove 3 and is provided with an opening 6 adapted to receive an eye 7 formed on the end of the pin 4. The pin may thus be swung on the stud 5 and normally lies in the groove 3 longitudinally of the plate.
A hook or keeper 8 is provided for the free end ofthe pin 4 at the end of the plate opposite from that bearing the stud 5, which hook is preferably formed integral with the plate from a hooked projection 8a provided on the blank sheet of metal la, and located to one side of the median line thereof, so that when the base plate 1 is formed, the hook will lie at one side of the groove 3. lt will thus be seen that the hook is readily adapted to receive the free end of the pin 4 when it ,is desired to clamp a garment against the plate 1.
On the outer side of the plate 1 and preferably opposite from the end carrying the stud 5, is pivotally mounted a U-shaped wire clasp 9, which is provided with inturned ends 9'LL adapted to bear in openings 10 provided ,in the sides of the intermediate corrugation forming the groove 3; the portion of the corrugation adjacent said openings heing squared to form the bearing. The legs V9b of said clasp thus readily lie within the grooves longitudinally of the plate 1 and the free or yoked end of the clasp extends slightly beyond the end of the plate so that when it is desired to clamp a garment against the plate, the end of the clasp will not be stopped by the crest 3'EL of the intermediate corrugation and the legs will be permitted to lie within the grooves 2.
For the purpose of providing a keeper for the free end of the clasp 9, a spring catch 11 is formed on the end of the plate 1, which catch protrudes outwardly slightly beyond the end of the plate and is bent inwardly from the outer side thereof below the crest of the intermediate corrugation, whereby when the free end of the clasp is held by the catch, the legs thereof will be held against the plate in the grooves 2, as above set forth.
The catch 11 is formed integral with the base plate 1 from a tongue 11a provided on the end of the blank sheet of metal 1a, and for the purpose of permitting the tongue to be bent inwardly below the crest of the intermediate corrugation, the plate may be cut inwardly a short distance, along the plane of the edges of the tongue as at 11b, F ig. 7.
ljreferably the clamping pin l and clasp 9 are slightly arched inwardly intermediate their ends, so that in use they must besprung-into closed position and held by their respective keepers, thus serving to more firmly bind the garments against the plate.
In use, the garment to be supported, as for example, the hose above instanced,` is clamped against the inner side of the plate by means of the clamping pin 4, and the supporting undergarment is clamped against the outer side of the plate by the clasp 9.
As shown in Fig. 3, the hose to be supported is first clamped to the fastener, a slot 12 being preferably provided in the lower side of the intermediate corugation, through which a portion of the upper edge of the hose is inserted from the outer side of the plate and drawn across the groove 3 into which it is, clamped by the pin i and securely held against the plate.
After the hose has been clamped to the plate, a doubled or looped portion of the adjacent .undergarment, or if convenient, the lower edge thereof, is drawn down over the outer side of the plate across the grooves 2, whereupon the clasp 9 is sprung into closed position binding the garment into the grooves 3, as shown in Fig. 4. The portion of the hose which is inserted through the slot 12, which is preferably located slightly to one side of the adjacent leg of the clasp 9, is thus bound between the outer side of the plate and the portion of the undergarment, so that the clasp 9 serves as an additional supporting means for the hose.
When it is desired to unfasten the garments, the clasp 9 is released from its keeper and the fastener detached from the supporting garment. The supported garment may then be removed, the fastener being carried thereby in position to be again clamped to the supporting garment.
It will be observed that the use of a corrugated or grooved plate in connection with the clamping means, in the construction of the fastener is an important feature of my invention, in enabling the respective garments to be positively held from slipping away from the plate by the pressure of the clamping means in the grooves, and at the same time to be held in such a manner as to eliminate the wear and tear upon the goods which has heretofore attended the use of fastening means of this general nature. I do not, however, wish to be limited to the exact detailsof construction set forth, but various vchanges and modications may be made is drawn directly across the groove 3 in the inner side of the plate, it beingv evident that the use of a slot through which the garment is drawn, as above set forth, is not essential.
I claim 1. A garment fastener including a corrugated plate, and clamping means on opposite sides of said plate adapted to coperate with the plate to bind the garments against opposite sides of the plate.
2. A garment fastener including a plate having grooves in its opposite sides, clamping devices pivotally mounted on the plate and adapted to lie within said grooves, and means on the plate for locking` the clamping devices in operative position.
3. A garment fastener including a plate having grooves in its opposite sides, clamping devices pivotally mounted on the plate at its opposite ends and adapted to lie with: in said grooves, and keepers on the opposite ends of the plate for locking the clamping devices in operative position.
4. A garment fastener including a plate formed from a blank sheet of metal and having grooves on its opposite sides, and clamping devices pivotally mounted on the plate and adapted to lie within said grooves, there being keepers formed on the plate for the free ends of said clamping devices.
5. A garment fastener including a plate having a single groove in one side and a pair of grooves in its opposite side, a clamping pin pivotally mounted on the plate and adapted to lie within the single groove, a keeper on the plate for the free end of said pin, U-shaped clasp pivotally mounted on the plate having legs adapted to lie within said pair of grooves, and a keeper on the plate for the free end of the clasp.
6. A garment fastener including a plate having a single groove in one side and a pair of grooves in its opposite sides, a slot in one of the pairs of grooves through which a garment to be fastened may be inserted and drawn across the single groove, and means on opposite sides of the plate for .clasping garments drawn across the grooves against the plate.
