BINDER.
Application filed- January 26, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT S. BRENAN, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, and a resident of St. John, Province of New Brunswick, Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and Improved Binder, of
means and also receiving part of the leaf of sheet music or other sheets, whereby the sheets are firmly secured in position.
A still further object in View is to provide binding stubs which are capable of receiving different forms of fastening clamps and for receiving one or more leaves.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a perspective view of a complete binder disclosing an embodiment of the invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the stubs. F ig. 3 is a perspective view of the stub shown in Fig. 2 and two double sheets secured thereto. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the structure shown in Fig. 3, the leaves being shown in top plan. Fig. 5 is a trans verse section through a binder with only two stubs connected therewith, these being shown spaced apart merely for the purpose of illustration. Fig. 6 is an enlarged trans verse sectional view through a stub showing a slight modified arrangement of clamping means whereby a double leaf and a single leaf may be secured in place. Fig. 7 is a plan view of a slightly modified form to that shown in Fig. 6, the single leaf being turned so as to be seen as a top view. Fig. 8 is av section through Fig. 7 on line 88. Fig. 9 is a detail fragmentary sectional view through part of one of the stubs showing the arrangement whereby the upper end is flexibly connected with the lower part.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, 1 indicates the front cover of the binder and 2 the back cover, connected by a suitable piece 3 and a strip 4. The strip 4 may be canvas or other suitable material and is arranged to receive the various stubs 5, the stubs being secured in Specification of Letters Patent.

place preferably by stitching 5, as shown more clearly in Fig. 5. In this figure only two stubs are shown but it will be evident that the stubs may be arranged as close together as possible,- for instance, as shown in Fig. 1 where the binder has received the limit of stubs.
Each stub is formed as shown more particularly in Fig. 2, namely, with upright sides (3 and 7 which merge into flaps 8 and 9. As shown in Fig. 9 the flaps are con nected with the upright sides by flexible coverings 10 and 11 which may be of canvas or other suitable material whereby a pivotal point or hinge structure 12 is produced. '1 he flap S is preferably cut away at 13 and 1-5 while the flap 9 is cut away at ll and .15 and in addition is provided with a slot 16. When it is desired to place a double sheet of music in the binder one sheet is threaded through slot 16 until the parts assume the position shown in Figs. 3 and 6, whereupon a clip or paper fastener 17 of any desired kind is placed in position, as shown in F 3. Preferably there is a clip 17 arranged at each end so as to grip the flap 8 in each of the notches 13 and 13. This will hold the double sheet in place. If a second double sheet is desired the same is threaded throu h slot 16, as shown more particularly in Fig. 3, and a paper fastener or clip 17 arranged in each of the notches lstand so as to overlap partof one sheet and part of the flap 9. In this way the sheet will be clamped at both ends. By reason of the hinge 12 each of the flaps is independently movable and in addition the upright sides 6 and 7 are independently movable. This allows each sheet to be turned over as desired.
In case it should be desired to place a double sheet on a given stub 5 and then a single sheet, the parts are arranged as shown in the modification in Fig. 6. The double sheet is threaded through the slot 16 and clamped to flap 8 as above described, while the single sheet 18 is laid on the flap 9 and any desired number of paper fasteners 19 passed through the slot 16 and caused to overlap the edge of the sheet and also flap 9 for clamping the flap and sheet together.
As more clearly shown in Figs. 7 and 8, a slight modification may be utilized without departing from the spirit of the invention. Referring to these figures it will be observed that the flaps 8 and 9 are not cut away as kind may be used having a flexible connecting member with which the various stubs 5 are associated. These stubs are arranged so that each stub will readily receive two double sheets of sheet music or one double sheet and one single sheet. When the sheet music is placed in position in the hinder the binder and sheet of music may then be used as an ordinary book.
It is of course evident that other fastening means may be used besides the paper clips without departing from the spirit of the invention and it is therefore understood that when the word paper clip is used these other fastening means are also included.
What I claim is:
1. In a binder for sheet music, a pair of backs connected with a flexible member, a plurality of stubs connected to said flexible member, each of said stubs comprising a pair of upstanding sides, a pair of flaps pivotally arranged at the upper end of said sides, and a removable clamping member for connecting a sheet to each of said flaps.
In a binder for sheet music, a back including a flexible member, a plurality of stubs connected with said flexible member, each of said stubs comprising a pair of upstanding sides, a pair of flaps hinged to the upper edge of said sides,'one of said flaps having a slot extending from near one end to near the opposite end, said slots being adapted to permit a sheet of music to be forced therethrough, and means for clamping said sheet of music to the opposite flap.
3. A binder for sheet music comprising a back formed with a flexible section, a plurality of stubs arranged on said flexible sec tion, each of said stubs comprising a pair of upstanding members and flaps hinged to the upper edge of said upstanding members, one of said flaps having a slot therein extending from near one end to near the opposite end so that one of the leaves of a double sheet of music may be passed therethrough, means for clamping one of said leaves to the opposite flap, and means for clamping a separate sheet to the flap having the slot.
l. A binder for sheet music comprising a back formed with a flexible section, a pinrality of stubs, means engaging the stubs and said flexible section for connecting the stubs flexibly with the flexible section, each of said stubs comprising a pair of upstanding walls and a pair of flaps hinged to said up standing walls, one of said flaps having an aperture extending from near one end to near the opposite end.
A binder for sheet music, comprising a back having a flexible section, a plurality of stubs connected with said flexible section, each of said stubs being formed with a pair of flaps flexibly mounted in position, one of said flaps having a slot extending from near one end to near the opposite end, each of said flaps being formed with cut-out portions,
and clamping means arranged in said out out portions for clamping sheet music to said flaps.
6. A binder for sheet music, comprising a back having a flexible section, a plurality of stubs connected with said flexible section, each of said stubs being formed with a pair of flexibly mounted flaps, each of said flaps having an aperture therein adjacent each end, and clamping means extending through said apertures for clamping sheet music to said flaps.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
