Description
PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE C. BAILEY, OF PITTSBRG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN STREET-WASHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,313, dated November 28, 1871.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE G. BAILEY, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Street-Washer, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being hadV by letters to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specication, which represents in perspective a sectional view of my improved street-washin g hydrant.
My invention relates to an improvement in that class of hydrants designed for use in washing streets and pavements; and consists in an improved arrangement and combination of the ordinary hydrant-valve and the ordinary stopcock, as hereinafter claimed, whereby a device is secured simpler and cheaper in construction, as well as more efficient in and easier of operation.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my improvement, I will proceed to describe its construction and mode of operation.
In the drawing, a represents the usual servicepipe, which leads from the water-main and is buried at such depth below the surface as to be protected against injury from frost. An ordinary stop-cock is arranged therein, as at I), for opening and closing the water-supply. It is operated by a rod, b, which extends up to or within reach of the surface. In the pipe, at a point conveniently near to the stop-cock b, I make an open projecting branch, c, and below a threaded projection, c', by which the devices are properly secured to the case. Onto the branch c I screw or otherwise attach the valve-case d, and in the 4latter arrange any of the ordinary forms of valve,
which, by being opened or closed, will let on or cut olf the iow of Water through the dischargepipe d', the valve itself being attached to the lower end of the discharge-pipe. At any convenient point below the surface the pipe d branches, as at d, and the branch, by an elbow, passes upward loosely through the top f of the case j' sufficiently far, so that by a screw-thread formed thereon, as shown, a hose-coupling can be connected therewith for the usual purposes. On the `side of the pipe d', opposite the branch d, is a swivel-socket, e, in which plays the head of a swivel-stem, e', the latter being threaded and operating through a tapped hole in the top f, and also having a square head, e, or other equivalent device, so that, by the use of a wrench, key, or other like tool, the stem e can be screwed up or down, and with it the pipe d and valve thereto affixed, and so the supply of water can be turned on or olf. These devices are all arranged in such convenient proximity and so combined that they all can be inclosed in a single case, f. The top f7 constitutes the bottom of a box, which is covered by a hinged cap, g, in the usual way.
Instead of the hydrant-valve and case d other suitable form of removable valve or cock-hydrant may be connected with the branch c so as to perform a like function.
I am aware that an ordinary stop-cock and operating-rod have been inclosed in one case and that a hydrant-valve and discharge-pipe to be used in connection therewith have been inclosed in another; but such construction involved the expense of two cases and of pipes to connect the two. I am also aware that two ordinary stopcocks, one having sometimes a hollow stem and at other times a separate discharge-pipe, have, with the devices appertaining thereto, been inclosed in a single case. These I disclaim, but
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The pipe d', branching on one side into a water-discharge, d, and on the other into a swivel-socket, e, when combined with a hydrantvalve below and a swivel-stem, c', above, arranged and operating substantially as described.
2. The discharge-pipe d', branching at its upper end into a Water-discharge, d, on one side and a head or arm, e, on the other, in combination with a removable valve or cock-hydrant and stop-cock, all inclosed in a single case, f, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I, the said GEORGE C. BAILEY, have hereunto set my hand.
GEORGE C. BAILEY. Witnesses:

G. H. CHRISTY. (167)
