To; all whom it may concern Be 1t known that T, AneIDIUs J. VAN ACKEREN, a c1t1zen of the Unlted States,
residing at Cedar Rapids, in the county of 'Boone and State of Nebraska, have' invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Combined Hatching and Brooding Devices,-
of which the following is aspeciflcation.
This invention relates to a combined hatching and brooding device for poultry, and has for its object to provide a single structure divided into compartments each being so arranged thata suitable degree of light, ventilation, feeding conveniences, temperature and other conditions found to be favorable will be available during the period required for hatching and brooding.
The invention, among other features, has reference to the provision-of a'plurality of elongated sections underlaid by a metallic screen and provided with a single-roof having suitable openings so that all ofthe sections-will be accessible forpurposes of cleaningand for arequired control during hatching, closures being provided for the-openings and arranged to prevent leak-age.

The invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as described herein'and'claimed, and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wl1erein,-
Figure 1 is a plan view of the several compartments, being a section on line 1 1 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a side view of the device, one of the roof windows being shown in a raised position and broken away. Fig. 3 is aview in longitudinal section through the structure, on line 3 3 of Fig. 4. Fig. 4 is a vertical section on line 4 4 of Fig. 2, the window being shown in a closed position. Fig. 5 is a plan view showing an end portion of the structure.
Referring now to the drawing for a more particular description, I provide a plurality of elongated sections, rectangular in plan, respectively indicated at 1, 2, 3 and 4, best shown in Fig. 1, by use of the upright front wall 5, the upright, imperforate rear wall and end walls respectively indicated at 6 and 7, and the partitions 7. To exclude rodents or the like, a layer 8 of wire netting for the entire structure is provided which should rest upon the ground. At 23 is indicated a second elongated wing for the roof. It is preferably disposed at a pitch, substantially of degrees, and provided, above each section, with an aperture 24 (Figs. 2, 4,) circumscribed, preferably, by upset flanges 25, and upon the inner side of said wing 23, for each section, is secured a sheet of wire netting 26. A plurality of frames 27 are provided, in each of which is mounted a glass plate 28. These frames are normally disposed upon flanges 25, and are adapted to swing upon the rod 29 which is disposed near the apex of the roof and which has bearings in brackets 30; and on account of the provision of flanges 25, rain will be prevented from entering. This inclined portion 23 of the roof is provided, for each section 1, 2, 3 and 4 with a ventilating aper ture 37, and above each aperture is mounted a hood 38.
During the period for hatching, the doors 15 should remain closed. It will be noted that the compartments 11 and 13 are well housed from rain so that the setting hens will be protected as required, and that suitable provision is made for light to enter from the front of the nests, the walls at the sides and rear of the nests being impel-forate, all of which are favorable conditions for hatching. Also it will be seen that the runways 14 are not protected from rain, this also being a desirable feature since it is well known that in instances where chicks are hatched from eggs which, during hatching, are exposed to a limited amount of moisture prove to be much stronger than those hatched by use of incubators or unexposed to moisture from natural sources or derived from the ground.
Each door 12 is provided with a strand 31. (Fig. 41,) which may be under control of an operator, so that the door may be opened or closed. After a brood of chickens has been hatched, the doors 12 and 15 may be opened, the grating 16 operating, as usual, to confine the hen within the section.
In order that water and feed may be supplied, each section is provided with a receptacle 32 for containing water, each having a drain pipe 33 extending outwardly of the section, pipes 34, provided with funnels at their upper ends, being employed for conducting water to said receptacles, from the top of the roof. By this arrangement feeding may be conveniently accomplished without causing disturbance to occupants of the nests, which obviously is a desirable feature, and since the pipes 34 are detached from the receptacles 32, all surplus water may pass from said receptacles when a fresh supply enters, and water therein will not become stagnant.
As thus described, a combined hatching and brooding device is provided which may be readily transported; all of the space is arranged to advantage, and since the several sections are of like construction, it may be conveniently and economically manufactured.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
A device of the type described, including chambers for hatching and brooding purposes, with a feeding compartment therebetween, the hatching compartment and feeding chamber having oppositely inclined roofs, the roof of the feeding compartment being provided with a wire-netting-covered opening, said roof also having upset-flanges at the upper and lower edges of said wirenetting covered opening, a hinged frame having arranged therein a light transmit ting member, said frame, with its lighttra-nsmitting member being arranged above said opening and supported upon said upset-flanges, said feeding chamber roof having a ventilating aperture therein near its upper edge, guarded by a hood in continuation of the hatching-chamber roof.
