CORPCEATION OF SPIRIT-LEVEL.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND A. Sermon, a citizen of theUnited States of America, residing at New Britain, Connecticut, have 1 invented a new and useful Spirit-Level, of
which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in spirit levels and is particularly applicable to that type of a tool known as a machinists level, in which the bubble glass is mounted on top of a base.
The object of the invention is to provide simple and improved means for effecting the accurate adjustment of the level.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the complete device. Fig. 2 is a relatively enlarged section of one end on the plane of the line 2'2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a detail.
1 represents the base.
2 represents the bubble glass which is mounted in a suitable tubular container or carrier 3. This container or case is cut open at its upper side to expose the top middle portion of the bubble glass.
4 is a metallic sleeve which is rotatably mounted upon the sleeve 3. This rotatable sleeve 4 is correspondingly cut away to expose the middle portion of the bubble glass. The sleeve 4 is made rotatable, so that it may be turned upon the sleeve 3 to bring a solid portion of said sleeve 4 over the bubble glass to protect the same when the level is not in use. The bubble glass container is provided at each end with a lug 5.
6 is a stationary stud or supporting shoulder on the frame 1 upon which one of the lugs 5 may be mounted and secured by means of a screw 7. 6 is an adjustable stud which is also mounted upon the frame 1 and is designed to support the other lug 5, which latter is secured to said adjustable stud 6* by a screw 7. The adjustable stud 6 has a central bore at its lower end and is also threaded, as indicated at 8. The frame 1 is provided with a correspondingly threaded bore to receive the threaded lower end 8 of the stud G 9 is a relatively heavy spiral spring seated in the lower end of the bore in the frame 1 and projecting up into the bore of the stud 6.
When the stud 6 is screwed down into the bore in the frame 1, it compresses the spring 9, which causes the screw threads to Specification of Letters Patent.

tightly bind, thus permitting the stud 6* to be adjusted up and down with great accuracy. The stud may be rotated by any deslred means, but preferably is provided with a transverse opening 10 into which a suitable pointed tool or nail may be inserted to assist in turning the adjusted stud 6 Obviously when the bubble glass is being adjusted on the base, the screw 7 at the top of the stud 6 should be slightly loosened to permit the stud to be turned. When the desired adjustment of the bubble glass has been efi'ected, the said screw 7 may be screwed down firmly and will thus cooperate with the spring 9 in holding the several parts in their adjusted position, that is to say, when the screw 7 is forced tightly down, it will cause the upper end of the stud 6 to bind against the lower side of the lug 5 so that it cannot turn to disturb the adjustment. The spring 9 likewise continues to operate in the manner aforesaid to cause the threads to remain in friction-tight engagement in the desired adjusted position.
The upper end of the bore in the frame 1 into which the threaded lower end 8 of the stud projects is preferably slightly counterbored as shown, so that none of the threads on the lower part 8 will be exposed.
What I claim is:
1. In a spirit level, a base, a bubble glass container mounted thereon and including a support for each end thereof, one of said supports comprising a screw threaded stud adjustable up and down by rotation in a screw threaded bore in said base, a spring arranged between said base and said adjustable stud to cause the screw threads to bind.
2. In a spirit level, a base, a bubble glass container mounted thereon and including a support for each end thereof, one of said supports comprising a screw threaded stud ad ustable up and down by rotation in a screw threaded bore in said base, a spring arranged between said base and said adjustable stud to cause the screw threadsto bind, said stud having a bore in its lower end, said spring projecting into said bore.
3. In a spirit level, a base, a bubble glass container mounted thereon and including a support for each end thereof, one of said supports comprising a screw threaded stud adjustable up and down by rotation in a screw threaded bore in said base, a spring arranged between said base and said adjustable stud to cause the screw threads to bind, and operative means of connection between the bubble glass and the upper end of said adjustable stud to cooperate with said spring in holding said stud against rotation when the parts are adjusted.
4. In a spirit level, a base, a bubble glass, a container therefor recessed at its upper side to expose the middle top side of said glass, two stud supports for the ends of said container, said supports being carried by said base, one of said supports comprising a threaded stud, the base having a corresponding threaded opening to receivesaid stud whereby said stud may be adjusted up and down by rotation, said stud having a bore in its lower end and a spiral spring seated in the bottom of the recess in the base at one end and in the bottom of the bore of the stud at the other end and means for securing said bubble glass container to the said supporting studs.
