To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER M. INGRAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hollis Center, in the county of York and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Taper Attaclr ments for SawmilLCarriages; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such aswill enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to. the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in taper attachments for saw mill carriages and the object in view is to produce a simple and efficient means where-' by the small end of a log may be thrown out so as to enable the saw to cut parallel to the center of the log and in the provision of mechanism for raising and lowering the same. 1
The present invention comprises various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described,.shown in the accompanying drawir'fgs and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accom panying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of a part of a saw mill carriage showing my improved taper attachment attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the taper attachment apparatus as attached to a portion of the carriage which is illustrated in cross section. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the taper attachment apparatus. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line H of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 55 of Fig. 8. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of a leveractuated block. Fig. 7 is a side elevation opposite the one, shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 8 is a similar view to that shown in Fig. 7 with the parts in different relative positions. Fig. 9 is a detail sectional view taken on line 9-9 of Fig. 8, and Figs. 10, 11 and 12 are perspective views of parts of the invention.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by numerals, 1 designates a saw mill carriage having a truck with wheels 2mounted upon the tracks 8. Fastened to the carriage is a standard 4 having laterally extending flanges 5 at its lower end which are fastened to the carriage in any suitable manner. Said standard has a downwardly projecting part 6, the rear edge of which bears against the edge of the carriage, as shown in the drawings, and the said standard is chambered for the reception of the vertically movable taper attachment member 7 having an under-hook dog 8 projecting from its lower end. Said member has its lower edge recessed as at 9 to allow the lower contracted portion of the member tobe lowered to the positions shown in Figs. 3 and 4: of the drawings, and is recessed as at 10 longitudinally for the reception of the leveractuated block 11, a detail of which is shown in F igk6 of the drawings. The opposite face of the member 7 is provided with a series of ratchet teeth 12, shown in edge view in Fig.3 and in dotted lines in Fig. 4 and in side elevation in Fig. 8. Said block 11 is provided with a diagonally disposed rib 13 upon one face having a cylindrical outlined lug 14 projecting from its face, while the same face of. the block near its upper end has a laterallyprojecting diamond-shaped lug 15. One wall of the chambered portion of the member ,1 is provided with a diagonally disposed'slot 16, shown clearly in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and in which said diagonally disposed lug 13 is adapted to have a play. A lever 17 is pivotally mounted upon a pin 18 and carries a pin 19 to which one end of the link 20 is pivoted and which link is provided with an aperture to receive the lug 14, afiording means whereby, as the lever is rocked upon its pivotal pin 18, said block 11 may be raised and lowered and moved laterally at the same time, thereby causing a lateral movement to be imparted to the offset member 7 accordingly as it may be desired to move a log engaged by the under-hook dog at the lower end thereof to ward or away from the inner marginal edge of the standard for the purpose of adjusting the log so that it will cut parallel to the longitudinal center thereof. A pawl 21 is pivotally mounted upon a pin 22 upon the lever 17 and a spring 23 is interposed between the lever and pawl to normally hold the latter in engagement with the segment teeth 24.
The means for raising the taper attachment member step by step to different elevations is illustrated clearly in Figs. 3, 7 and 8 of the drawings, in which it will be noted that the face of the standard is provided with a longitudinal recess, designated by nu 20 g the lower portion of the "held by the springo36.

Lea'f springs, designated by numerals 51 and 52, bear the former against the outer face ofthe'pawl' 28 and the latter against the face of :the pawl 27 and serve to normally hold the free ends thereof yieldingly against the ratchet teeth 12.
The operation of my device will be readily understood and is as follows z-ln the drawings I have shown three of my taper attachments as applied to a saw mill carriage and which are illustrated as an engagement in difierent adjusted positions with a log, the purpose of the invention being to so adjust the taper attachment devices that the log may-be held so that the saw will cut in lines parallel with the longitudinal center of the log. The operator by the manipulation of the lever 17 may cause the taper member with the under-hook dog at the lower edge thereof to move the log toward the saw as the boards are cut from the log. The operation of the mechanism for imparting a step by step elevating movement to the taper member carrying the hook is through the medium of the mechanismillustrated clearly in Figs. 7 and'8 of the drawings and is accomplished as follows: WVhen the lever 31 is swung from the position shown in dotted lines tothe positions shown in solid lines in th same figure, the pawl 27, by reason of its pivotal connection with the short arm of the lever 31, will be given an upward movement, the spring 52 holding the upper free end of said pawl in engagement with member 7, the pawl 28, which rides idly over the next lower tooth, will be thrown by the spring 51 into engagement with the tooth to hold the plate in the position to which it has been elevated by the pawl 27. On the return outer swinging movement of the lever 31 to the position shown in dotted lines, the pawl 27 will be thrown down to its lowest position by reason of its pivotal connection with the short arm of the lever to get a new hold upon a tooth on the face of Q the member 7. This swinging movement of the lever 31 may be repeated in order to impart a step by step movement to the memher 7 to raise the same to its highest limit. When it is desired to allow the member 7 to return to its lowest position, which is that shown in solid lines in Fig. 8, the operator, by pressing upon the spring-pressed pawl 83, may throw the lower end thereof out of the path of the shoulder 39 and, when a further swinging movement to the right is imparted to the lever, the edge of the latter coming in contact with the shoulder 44,
will cause the member 41 to tilt upon its pivot, and by reason of the pivotal connection between said member 41 and the laterally projecting portion 28 of the pawl 28, said pawl 28 will be moved downward, the free upper end thereof coming in contact with the inclined surface 46 which will throw the same out of engagement with the ratchet teeth upon the face of the member 7. The same movement to the right of the lever 31 will, through the pivotal connection of its short arm with the recess 29 in the pawl 27, cause the latter to be moved downward, its upper end being thrown out of engagement. with the teeth upon the member 7 by the same inclined portion 46. When both pawls are withdrawn from engagement with the ratchet teeth upon the member 7, the latter will fall by gravity to the position shown in Fig. 8. As the member 41 is tilted to the position shown in Fig. 8, the shoulder 48 thereon will be positioned in contact with the lateral projection 50, so that, when the initial movement is imparted to the lever 31 on its outer throw, the projection 50 will bear against the shoulder 48 and cause the member 41 to tilt upon the pivot 43, which movementwill return the pawl to its engaging position with the teeth of the member 7 and the tilting movement of the lever 31 will return the pawl 27 to its engaging position with the teeth upon the member 7. The parts having been returned to their normal positions, the apparatus will be in readiness to repeat the operations when it is desired to raise a log in the manner described.
From the foregoing, it will be noted that, by the provision of an apparatus embodying the features of my invention, a simple and efficient apparatus is afforded whereby the offset member may be moved laterally toward or away from the saw for the purpose of adjusting the log held by the member 4 thereto, while a step by step upper movement may be imparted to the member carrying the log and, when it is desired to quickly return the log carrying member to its lowest position, it may be accomplished by the swinging of the lever 31 to its farthest limit toward the log, thus allowing the member to fall by gravity. hat I claim to be new is 1. A tapering attachment for saw mill carriages, comprising a standard which is chambered, a vertically disposed taper attachment member movable within the standard and having an under-hook dog thereon, a lever-actuated block engaging said member and designed to move the member laterally as the block is moved longitudinally, and means for imparting an upward intermittent movement to said member, as set forth.

A tapering attachment for sawmill carriages, comprising a standard which is chambered, a vertically disposed taper attachment member movable within the standard and having an under-hook dog thereon, the face of said member having a longitudinal recess, a block movable within said recess, a lever having pivotal link connections with said block, means for imparting a lateral movement to the member as the block is moved longitudinally, and means forimparting an upward intermittent movement to said member, as set forth.

A tapering attachment 8 for sawmill carriages, comprising a standard which is chambered, a vertically disposed taper attachment member movable within the standard and having an under-hook dog thereon, the face of said member having a longitudi nal recess, a block movable within said recess, the wall of the standard having diagonally disposed slots therein, projections upon said block movable within said slots, a pivoted lever upon the standard and having pivotal link connections with one of said projections, and means for imparting an intermittent upward movement to the mem be), as set forth.

A tapering attachment for sawmill carriages, comprising a standard which is chambered, a vertically disposed taper attachment member movable within the standard and having an under-hook dog thereon, the face of said member having a longitudinal recess, a block movable within said recess, the wall of the standard having diagonally disposed slots therein, projections upon said block movable within said slots, a pivoted lever upon the standard and having pivotal link connections with one of said projections, a pawl pivoted to said lever, a segment with notches therein for engagement with said pawl, and means for imparting an upward intermittent movement to the member, as set forth.

A tapering attachment apparatus for sawmill carriages, comprising a standard which is chambered, a taper attachment member mounted within said chamber, means for imparting a lateral movement to said member, the face of the taper member having a series of ratchet-teeth and an under-hook dog at the lower end thereof, a pivoted lever upon the standard, a pawl engaged by an arm of said lever and designed to engage said ratchet teeth, a second pawl and a pivotal member connected therewith and adapted to be actuated by said means for imparting a lateral movement to said member, the face'of the taper member havinga seriesof ratchet teeth and an un der-hook dog at the lower end thereof, a pivoted lever upon the standard, a pawl engaged by an arm of said leverand designed to engage connection with "said second-referred to pawl, said 'tilting member having a projection in the path of said lever and forming means whereby, as the latter is swung toward its limit in one direction, the two pawls may be thrown out of engagement with said ratchet teeth to allow theoffset member to fallto its lowest limit, as set forth.

A tapering attachment apparatus for 'sawmill carriages, comprising a standard which is chambered, a taper attachment member" mounted within said chamber, means for imparting a lateral movement to said member, the face of the oifset .member having a' series of ratchet teeth andan under-hook dog at the lowerend thereof, a pivoted lever upon the standard, a pawl engaged by an arm of said lever and designed to engage said ratchet teeth, a second pawl engaging said teeth, springs for holding said pawl in engagement with the ratchet teeth, a tilting member having pivotal connection with said second-referred to pawl and provided with 'a shoulder in the path of said lever and forming means whereby, as the lever is moved to its limit in one direction, said pawls will be drawn out of engagement with said ratchet teeth, a second pawl engaging said teeth, a tilting member mounted upon said standard and havmg pivotal pro ecting from sawmill carriages, comprising a standard 7 which is chambered, a taper attachment member mounted withinsaid chamber, means for imparting a lateral movement to said member, theface of the offset member having a series of ratchet teeth and an underhook dog at'the lower end thereof, a pivoted lever upon the standard, a pawl engaged by an arm of said lever and'designed to engage said ratchetvteeth, a second pawl engaging said teeth, springs for holding said pawl in engagement with the ratchet teeth, a tilting member having pivotal connection with said second-referred to pawl and provided with a shoulder in the path of said lever and forming means whereby, as the lever is moved to its limit in one direction, said pawls will be drawn out of engagement with the ratchet teeth,said tilting member having a shoulder upon the face thereof, an integral arm upon said lever adapted. to engage the shoulder upon the tilting member to return the latter to its normal position when the lever is swung in one direction, as set forth.
10. A tapering attachment apparatus for sawmill carriages, comprising a standard, a taper attachment member movable therein and having a hook in the edge thereof,
means for imparting alateral movement to said member, teeth upon one face of the member, the outer face of the standard having a vertical recess with a hole through the bottom of the latter near its upper end, the lower edge of said hole being beveled, a pawl movable within said recess and having its upper end extending through said hole and engaging said ratchet teeth, a pivoted angle lever having one end engaging said pawl, a second pawl mounted within said recess, a curved tilting member mounted upon the standard and having pivotal connection with said second pawl and having a shoulder upon the face thereof, an arm the side of the lever and adapted to engage said shoulder to actuate the tilting. member as the lever is moved in one direction, as set forth.

Atapering attachment apparatus for sawmill carriages, comprising a standard, a taper attachment member movable therein and having a hook in the edge thereof, means for imparting a lateral movement to said member, teeth upon one face of the member, the outer face of the standard having a vertical recess with a hole through the bottom of the latter near its upper end, the lower edge of said hole being beveled, pawls mounted within said recess and having teeth engaging ends extending through said hole and inclined adjacent to their upper ends and adapted to contact with said beveled edge of the hole as the pawls are moved in one direction, and means for imparting longitudinal movements to the pawls, as set forth.

A tapering attachment apparatus for sawmill carriages, comprising a standard, a taper attachment member movable therein and having a hook in the edge thereof, means for imparting a lateral movement to said member, teeth upon one face of the member, the outer face of the standard having a vertical recess with a hole through the bottom of the latter near its upper end, the lower edge of said hole being beveled, a pawl movable within said recess and having its upper end engaging said teeth, a pivoted lever connected to said pawl, a second pawl mounted in said recess, a tilting member mounted upon the standard and having pivotal connection with said second pawl and provided with shoulders upon the outer face thereof, a bar fixed to the standard and having a shoulder upon the upper edge thereof, a pawl pivoted to said lever and adapted to engage the shoulders upon said bar to limit the movement of the lever in Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. 0.
