HYDROCARBON-BUBNER.
To all whom it ma concern: g Be it known that I, LEMUEL P. ,COULTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hydrocarbon- Burners, of which the following is a specification. g 1 This invention relates to hydro-carbon burners and it consists in the-novel, features hereinafter described and claimed. 1
An object of theinvention is to provide a burner 01? the character stated having means'tor gasitying the fuel from the heat of the burners and means for mixing the gas with air, the last mentioned means being located at a point remote from the burner caps thereby preventing back firing or the ignition of the gas at the point of mixing.
With this object in view the burner comprises a tube having anopening at one end and a trough mounted upon the other end. A pan is supported upon the trough and is provided with upstanding nipples upon which the burner caps rest. A pipe in the form of a loop extends around the burners and is located within the heating zones thereof. The said pipe is provided with suitable valves whereby the admission of the liquid fuel into the same is controlled and whereby thepassage of gas from the same into the said tube is controlled.
In the accompanying drawing :Figure 1 is a partial side elevation and a partial longitudinal sectional view of the hydrocarbon burner; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of a pan used in the burner.
The hydro-carbon burner comprises a metallic tube 1 which is provided at one end with an opening 2 at the lower edge of which is located an upstanding flange 3. A trough 4 isrlocated upon the opposite end of the said tube and communicates with the same. The said tube and trough are made in one casting or piece. A pan 5 is positioned upon the upper edge of the trough 4 and serves as a cover for the same- The said pan is provided with upstanding nipples 6 which communicate with the in-. terior of the trough and which have their upper edges disposed in planes above the plane in which the upper edge of the said pan lies. The pan 5 is pro vided upon the upper surface of its bottom and at points between its ends with upstanding posts 8.. The upper ends of the said posts lie in a plane at a higher elevation than the plane in which the upper ends of the nipples 6 lie. Burner caps 9 are located over the nipples 6 in a usual manner. around the edges of the caps 9 and the opposite sides of the said pipe rest upon the upper ends 01 the posts 8. A plate 11 passes transversely across theopposite sides of the pipe 10 andliesupon the same and two of .the bolts 7 pass through the said plate 11 and hold the same in position whereby the plate retains the pipe 10 in position upon the upper ends of the said posts 8. A needle valve'12 is located at one end of the pipe 10 and has its discharge end disposed into the tube 1 at the opening 2 thereof. A valve casing 13 is connected with the other end of the pipe 10 and valves 14 and 15 are arranged to operate in the said casing13.
An oil supply pipe 16 leads from a tank or other suitable source of supply and connects with the valve casing 13. A pipe 17 is controlled by the valve 14 and leads from the casing 13 into one end of the pan 5. The valve 15 controls the admission of oil into the pipe 10.
In operation, and when it is desired to start the burner the valve 15 is moved to a closed position and the valve 14 is opened a so that the oil may flow from the pipe 16 through the pipe 10 and is gasified by the heat of the burners and passes in the form of gas through the valve 12 into the tube. 1.
-As the gas enters the tube 1 through the opening 2 it mixes with the air from the exterior. .This mixture is then ignited at the caps inasmuch as the mixture passes through the tube 1, the trough 4 and the nipples 6 of the pan 5 to the caps 9. g
It will be observed that the opening 2 'in the tube 1 is located at a point remote A pipe 10 in the form of a loop passes from the caps 9; consequently it is impossible for the flame to pass back through the trough and tube and ignite at the opening 2 of the said tube which is the point at which the carbureting of the gas takes place. In other words, the structure-is such that it cannot back fire and the gas cannot ignite at the point at which the carbureting is effected. The upstanding flange 3 will retain any of the ungasified oil in the tube 1 until the same is evaporated and mixed with the. incoming air.
Having described the invention what is claimed is;
1. A hydro-carbon burner comprising a tube provided with an opening at one end, and having a trough located at its other end, a pan mounted upon the trough and having nipples Which communicate with the interior thereof, caps located overthe nipples, said pan having a peripheral. flange located beyond the sides of the caps, a pipe in, the form of a loop passing around the caps, valves for controlling the admission of oil into the pipe and for controlling the exit of gas therefrom, the said opening in the tube being located at a point remote from the heating zone of the caps.
2. A hydro-carbon burner comprising a tube provided with an opening at one end and having an upstanding flange at the lower edge of the opening, a trough mounted at the other end of the tube, a pan located upon the trough and having upstanding nipples which communicate with the interior thereof, caps located over the nipples, and a pipe in the form of a loop extending around the caps and supported upon the pan, and valves for controlling the admission of oil into the pipe, and for controlling the exit of gas therefrom, the said opening in the tube being located at a point remote I from the heatingzone of the caps.
