' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 1*,1916.
Application filed April 11, 1910. Serial No. 01,542.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES, C. Avnmnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trees, in the parish of Caddo and State of Louis1ana,;have invented acertain new and useful Improvement in Well-Drilling Rigs, of which improvement the following is a specification. v v
This invention relates to rigs for drilling wells, and more particularly to what are known as Standard rigs and combination rigs used for drilling oil wells, and in which a derrick is employed. With these forms of rigs as heretofore used hoisting drums, such .as the so-called bull wheel and the calf wheel, have been mounted at one or more sides of the derrick and upon its foundation, but an additional foundation has been employed extending out from one side of the foundation of the derrick for supporting a driving wheel. for operating the walkin beam, sand reels, and other drums or w eels for various purposes. This additional foundation requires considerable space and a lar amount of extra timber labor is also r uired in its construction,
One of the o jects ofmy invention is to provide a rig in which substantially all the wheels, hoists, and other 0 crating parts are mounted on the derric foundation, thereby greatly reducing the cost of eonstruction and the amount of space and material'required. 1
Another feature of my improvement relates to the means for driving the walkin beam, and a rotary by a crank shaft loca near or beneath the derrick floor and having suitable sprocket wheels.
Another feature comprises a line shaft mounted on u right derrick membersacross one side of tli plurality of drums located above said shaft at the same side of the derrick and adapted to be driven thereby.
Another feature comprises a pivot for the f lower end of the samson post, whereby a short walking beam may be employed, and the end thereof will move in substantlally a drilling with cable and tools system or for pumping'after the drilling is compl fully described in, detail novelty will be'set' forth in I claims.
and the points 'of the appended which is expensive, while much additional or more, three being shown in ig. 3 of the .and tools of a standard ri These drums shaft,10.' The drums are also each pro e derrick foundation and a N of the derrick, a more l'ifldfinfing is prostraight line. This feature may be used-for I thebase ofjtheidemc eted. .5 These and other features will nowbe more :The crank whee 18ci 1s provided with In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a plan of the base of a derrlck with one form of my improved drilling rig; Fig. 2, a side elevation of a portion of the derrick showing the driving connection for the walking beam; Fig. 3, an elevation of one of the adjacent sides of the derrick showing the power or line shaft and the several hoisting drums that may be driven thereby; Fig. 4, a vertical section through the derrick and showing the walking beam and crank shaft in side elevation; and Fig. 5, a similar sectional view showing a rotary rig and the driving connection fromthe crank shaft.
My lmprovement is shown as applied in connection with the usual form four le ged derrick with a square foundation or iase constructed of main sills, 6, cross sills, 7,
floor beams or stringers 8, and flooring, 9.
A power or line shaft, 10 is mounted in hearings on the upright members on the derrick base and across one side thereof near the floor, said shaft being preferably driven by an .engine or other motor, '11, connected directl at one end ofthe shaft by means of a flexi le' coupling. Above the shaft and parallel therewith, upon the samev side of the derrick aremounted the hoistin drums one as drawing, the drum, 12, which may be used for bailing with the standard rig, the drum, 13, for hoisting tubing etc, of a rotary ri and the drum, 14, used with the usual cab e are-mounted onse arate s aftsada ted to be driven I inde en entl of each "at or b means of-suita le' clutc es, sprocket whee s and. drive chain connections from"the-;linevided with the usual brake bands and wheels. thus locatingthej line shaft be low theholsting drums andlnearer the floor.
vided for said shaftan vibration is thereby avoided. p The walkiifi beam, 15, is pivotally m use ed on the post, 16, and isoperated by "apitman, 1'1, pivoted {on .flieh-crank s rocket wheehAS; mounted on the crank shefiylwwhichis supfiortedin bearings' on near or below the H001, and is driven by'a chain from the line shaft, operatin on sprockets, 20 and 18.
cha e ea chain driven from a s ing, 21, whereby the same may swing forward and backward a slight distance to com- .pensate for the inward and outward movement of the end of the beam in oscillating on its pivot. The braces, 22, are pivotally attached at one end to the top of the walking beam, and at the other en to the floor at some distance, for steadying and guiding the samson 0st. This feature of providing for a straig t line movement is especially imortant after the well is finished, for operatmg the rod, 27, of the pump. A universal link connection, 23, is provided between the upper end of the pitman and the walking beam, whereby the pitman may swin both transversely and longitudinall of sai beam and thereby prevent any bin ing action on the connecting pin.
My improvement is also adapted to operate a rotary, 26, by means of a sprocket, 25, and rocket wheel, 24, on the-crank shaft, 19, as s own in Fig. 5. The size. of the sprocket wheels for the several drives may be readily changed at any time 've the desired speed ratio.
t will now be seen that my improved construction may be used either as a standard rig with cable and tools, or as a combination rig including the rotar hydraulic system,
and that substantially a 1 parts of the a paratus are contained within the space 0 the gerrick foundation and supported upon its ase.
Having now described my invention, what 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters 'Patent is:
1. In a well drilling rig, the combination with a derrick having a substantially rectangular base, of a power shaft mounted in bearings along one side of said base, a crank shaft at the middle portion of one of the other sides of said base, a driving connection between said shafts a walking beammounted on said base, and operated bysaid crank shaft, and one or more hoisting drums mounted above said. power shaft and operated thereby.
2. In a well drilling rig, the combination with a derrick having a'substantially rectangular base, of a power shaft mounted in bearings along one side of said base, a crank shaft mounte at the middle portion of one of the other sides of said base, and extending beneath the floor of the derrick, a driving connection between said shafts, a rotary drilling device, and a driving connection from said crank shaft to the rotary.
3. In a well drilling rig, the combination with a derrick having a substantially rectangular base with upright members at the corners thereof, of a samson post mounted on the derrick floor within the u rights, a walking beam pivotally mounte on said 0st, a crank shaft see, a itman connecting said crank shaft and wal ing beam, and driving mechanism for o eratin said crank shaft.
the combination 4. n a wel drilling rig, with a derrick having a base and upright members at the corners thereof, of a power shaft mounted in bearings along one side and supported on said base, a motor connected at one end of said shaft, one or more hoistin drums driven from said shaft, a crank s aft also mounted on said base within the uprights and parallel with said power shaft, and a driving connection between said shafts.
5. In a well drilling rig the combination with a derrick having a base and upright members at the corners thereof, of a power shaft mounted in bearings along one side and supported on said base, one or more hoistin drums driven from the power shaft, a cran shaft also mounted at the middle ortion of one of the other sides of said base parallel with the power shaft, and havin a crank, a walkin beam also substanti y arallel with sai shafts, and a pitman connected to the crank and the walking beam.
'6. In a well drilling rig, the combination of a samson post hinged at its base,a walking beam mounted on said post, and braces pivotall connected to the walking beam at a point a ove the samson post an to a suport. p 7. In a well drilling rig the combination with a derrick having a door, of a samson post hinged at its base to said floor, a walkmg beam mounted on the samson post, and braces pivotally connected walking beam at post and at the other to In testimony whereof said floor.
