Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 19, 1916.
Application filed A ril 30, 1915. Serial No. 24,899.
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, EDWARD C. MEIER, a citizen of, the United States, residing at Phoenixville, in the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in boilers, the object of the invention being to provide an improved construction of boiler in which the several parts are welded together, reducing the use of rivets to a minimum in the boiler construction.
- proved boiler in which the waterlegsor boxes are constructed of a plurality of parts securely welded together and dispensing with the use of rivets as connecting means.
A further object is to provide a boiler which; is of simple inexpensive construction, and which is capableof withstanding the maximum of internal pressure.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a view in end elevation illustrating my improvements in connection with a battery of boilers. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view in section on an enlarged scale on the line 29, of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view in longitudinal section on the line 33 of Fig. 1, the accumulating tank'being omitted, and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view illustrating a.
modification.
1, 1, represent the waterboxes or legs of a boiler connected by a cylinder 2, and by water tubes 3. The outer sheet 4: and the inner sheet 5 of the; boxes 1 are connected by a welded joint 6,which construction forms the subject matter of an application for patent executed on even date herewith, and which therefore need not be described more in detail in the present application. The sheets 4 of both boxes 1, are provided with openings 7 in line with openings 8 in sheets 5. Heads 9 are projected through the openings 7 and haveannular flanges 10 at their inner edges welded to the sheets 4. Nipples 11 are projected through the openings 8, and have annular fl es l2 we d d t th i er fece of described without departing from my sheets 5. The boiler casing 2 is secured to the nipples 11 in any approved manner, but I have shown ordinary rivets 18 for the purpose.
Stay bolts 14 extend through the sheets 4: and5 of boxes 1, and also through the flanges 10 and 12 of heads 9 and nipple 11 respectively. As above stated, the parts of the boxes 1 are welded together. The heads 9 are welded to the sheets 4:, and the nipples 11 are welded to the sheets 5, so that the boxes are constructed entirely without employing ordinary rivets, and while I have shown rivets connecting the casing 2 with the nipples 11, it is to' be understood that this particular form of connection is im material as my invention resides more par ticularly to the construction of box or waterlegs and the casing 2 may be connected in any approved manner.
In Fig. 1, I illustrate in end elevation a battery of boilers in which a steam collecting tank 15 is provided above the boxes 1, and said boxes are connected by couplings 16. One of these couplings is shown in detail in Fig. 2,'in which it will be noted that the coupling is provided with oppositely screw-threaded ends engaging in threaded openings 17 in the boxes, and is provided between its ends with a wrench receiving angular portion 18 to rigidly couple the boxes together, and insure a free flowof water from one box to the other, preventing any possibility of the filling of one box without the other.
Fig. 4 illustrates a modification in which the sheets 4 and 5 are provided with outwardly projecting flanges 19 around its openings 7 and 20 respectively, so as to further strengthen the juncture with the head 9 and nipple 11. In this construction, the welding point 20 is at the outer end of the flange 19, and not at the wall of the openm s.
In all places I have indicated the weld by the numeral 20, and as the drawings are on an extremely small scale, the welding material is exaggerated, but it is to be understood that I shall preferably weld at the points indicated by the numeral 20.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts 1nvention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall withinthe spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a boiler, the combination with two water legs, both water legs havingregistering openings in their inner and outer sheets, heads projected through the openings in the outer water leg sheets, said heads having outwardly disposed iflanges located against the inner faces of the outer water le sheets, nipples projecting through the openings. in the inner water leg sheets and having flanges at their inner ends, a casing secured at its ends to the respective nipples, a plurality of stay bolts projected through both sheets of both water legs, and through the internal flanges of theheads and the nipples, substantially as described.
2. In a boiler, thecolnbination with two water legs, both water legs having registering openings in their inner and outer sheets, heads projected through the openings in the outer water leg sheets, said heads having outwardly disposed annular flanges located against the inner faces of the outer water leg sheets, nipples, projecting through the openings in the inner water leg sheets and having annular flanges at their inner ends, an elongated casing having its ends located inside of and secured to the respective nipples, a plurality of stay bolts arranged in annular formation and projected through both sheets of both water legs and through the flanges of the'heads and the nipples, substantially as described.
A boiler, comprising two boxes, said boxes having openings in their inner and outer sheets, heads projected through the openings in the outer sheets, and having outwardly disposed projecting flanges at their inner portionsvwelded to the'inner faces of the outer sheets, nipples projecting through the openings in the inner sheets and having outwardly disposed projecting flanges welded to the inner faces of the inner sheets, a casing-connecting the nipples, and stay bolts projecting through the front and rear sheets and through the flanges of the heads and nipples, substantially as described. In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
