FRANK J. MULLER, OF PHILADELPHTA, PENNSYLVANIA.
DISPLAY-STAND.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 19116.
Application filed July 24, 1915. Serial No. 41,726.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, FRANK J. MULLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Display- Stands, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to stands for displaying articles in shop Windows, on counters and the like and has for anobject to provide a stand that will effectively support and display an article, and which can also be readily folded to take up very little space.
Among other features the invention comprehends a stand that can be quickly folded into a compact form and which, when set up, can be adjusted to properly support the article or object to be displayed or exhibited.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings constituting a part of this specification in which similar characters of refer ence denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a. perspective view of the stand in position to display an article, Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken through the stand when in open position, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the stand folded and Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the stand as shown in Fig. 3.
Referring more particularly to the views, I provide a plurality of substantially U shaped frames 10, 11, the former being in the nature of a base and the latter a supporting frame. Struck from a side 12 of the base is a crosspiece 13 connecting with the opposite side 14, a similar crosspiece 15 being struck from the side let to connect with the side 12. The supporting frame 11 is mounted to swing upon the crosspiece 13 and mounted to swing upon a reduced transverse portion of the supporting frame is a channel part 16 of an adjusting element 17, having its other part 18 sliding in the channel part 16 and held by a suitable screw or other member 19.
The free end of the bar 18 is formed with a clasp or hook element 20 and the crosspiece 15 is formed with an offset 21 adapted to be engaged by the hook element 20 as shown in Fig. 1. With this construction it will be clear that the angularity of the supporting .frame can be varied and it will be seen that an object reclining against the supporting frame will have its lower extremity bear against a ledge 22 formed with the front of the base by cutting away portions of the sides of the base 10 as at 23.
The sides 24: of the supporting frame 11 have notches 25 therein and when it is desired to fold up the stand, the hook element 20 is disengaged from the offset 21 thus permitting the supporting frame to swing downwardly into the base as shown in Figs. 3 and', the notches 25 receiving the crosspiece 15. The adjustingelement, comprising the parts 16 and 18, is now swung beneath the base and the hook element 20 engaged with an offset 26 in the crosspiece 13. Thus the entire device is folded in a compact form and it will be seen that by loosening the screw 19 and sliding the part or bar 18 on the channel part 16 to move the hook into engagement with the offset, and then tight ening the screw 19 to bind the parts 16 and 18, the said hook 20 will be locked to the offset of the crosspiece 13 thus preventing accidental opening of the device during shipment. This may also be accomplished to the end that the device may be locked in an open position, the hook 20 in the latter instance being adapted to lock with the offset 21.
From the foregoing description it will be clear that the device consists of few and simple parts; can be cheaply manufactured and if desired, made of stamped metal, and that various slight changes can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention, the scope of which is defined in the appended claims.
I claim 1. In a display stand, a base, cross pieces thereon and having offset portions, a frame swingingly carried by one of said cross pieces and movable into folded position to said base, and a frame supporting element normally engaging the offset of one of the cross pieces to support the frame and adapted to engage the offset of the other cross piece to secure said frame in inclosed relation with respect to said base.
2. In a display stand, a base, cross pieces thereon, a frame movably supported by one of said cross pieces and adapted to fold upon said base, and a frame supporting element pivotally connected to the frame and having a hooked end, the hook of the frame supporting element normally engaging with the other of said cross pieces for retaining the frame in supporting position, and said hook adapted to engage with the cross piece of the base upon which the frame is movably supported for securing the frame in closed position.
3. A display stand comprising a base, cross pieces on the base, a frame adjustably mounted on one of said cross pieces, a frame supporting element pivotally connected to the frame for holding the latter in adjusted position, said frame supporting means being foldable beneath said frame and interlocking with the cross piece of the base upon which the frame is connected for holding the latter in folded position.
4. In a display stand, a base, cross pieces having offset portions, a frame swingingly carried by one of said cross pieces including notched side members, frame supporting means pivotally connected to said frame and normally engaging with the offset of one of the cross pieces to support the frame, said frame supporting means engaging with the offset of the cross piece upon which the frame is mounted for locking the latter, the notches of the frame straddling the opposite cross piece upon the locked position of the frame to permit of the latter being folded within said base.
5. In a display stand, a base, cross pieces, one of said cross pieces being provided with an offset portion and reduced portions, a frame swingingly connected to the reduced portions of the latter mentioned cross piece, frame supporting means pivotally connected to said frame, said frame supporting means adapted to fold beneath the frame and engage with the offset of the cross piece upon which the frame is mounted for locking the frame in folded position, and within said base.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
FRANK J. MULLER.
