To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLARD PnNNocK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minerva, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Metallic Railway-Tie, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to improvements in metallic railway ties and the objects of the invention are, first, to provide suitable bases for the support of the railway rails, and second, to provide means for removing the rails from their bases without removing or disturbing the tie bars which connect the tie bases together. The latter. object is especially desirable in street railway construction where a railway track is located upon a paved street. These objects, together with other objects readily apparent to those skilled in the art, may be attained by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, although the invention may be embodied in other forms, the construction illustrated being chosen by way of enample.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a top view of the base showing the rail properly connected. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on line 2-2, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line 3 3, Fig. 1, show'- ing the railway rail brace in position. Fig. 4 is a section taken on line Alf-4, Fig. l. Fig. 5 is a detached view showing a portion of one of the tie-bars. Fig. 6 is a detached view of the railway rail brace.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout all the iigures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawing, 1 represents a railway supporting base which is preferably rectangular,- but not necessarily so and for the purpose of holding the base its under side should be provided with downward extending flanges 2, which iianges are embedded in the foundation, regardless of the construction of the foundation. In the modern construction of railway beds, especially for street railway purposes, a concrete foundation is employed. By forming the downturned flanges 2, chambers are pro vided, which can be filled with cement, thereby assisting in holding the railway rail bases in proper position.
In the construction of railway tracks where cement foundations are not used, the downturned flanges 2 will embed themselves in the bed upon which the bases are placed.

The bases l are provided with the integral flanges 3, which flanges are provided with the extensions 4l, which extensions are provided with the elongated slots 5. For the purpose of holding the bases l in proper spaced relationship with reference to each other, the tie-bars 6 are employed, which are formed of such a length that they will hold the bases in position to bring the rails into proper gage. The flanges 3 are spaced from each other as best illustrated in Fig. 1 and the extensions or heads 4l, which are designed to come in contact with the longitudinal edges of the railway rail bases 7 are provided with the notches or shoulders 8. The tiebars 6 are each provided with the heads 9, which heads are so formed that their top or upper portions will lie upon the top of the rail bases 7. The heads 9 are formedoof a thickness to correspond substantially with the distance between the shouldered portions or extensions l and the rail bases by which arrangement the tie-bars 6 will be held against end movement regardless of the fastening devices.
For the purpose of holding the tie-bars 6 in proper relative position and in a position so that their headed ends will properly clamp the base flanges of the railway rails the tapered cotter keys 10 are provided which keys are passed through suitable slots formed in the extensions l or fianges 3. It will be understood that by notching the flanges 3 in such a manner as to receive the heads 9 of the tiebars and placing the keys lO'through the slots 5 and above the tie-bars there can be no upward movement of the tie-bars and by forming the keys wedge shaped the taper being in a vertical direction the heads 9 will be drawn tightly down and upon the base flanges 7, but owing to the fact that the heads 9 are formed of a size to abut against the notched or shouldered end of the flanges the lateral thrust or strain will be practically removed from the keys and the thrust or lateral strain comes direct against the flanges 3 and the heads 9.
In some instances and especially where railway `tracks are laid upon paved streets it is of importance to provide means whereby the railway rails can be removed for any desired purpose without disturbing the pavement between the railway rails and in order to accomplish this purpose I provide short railway clamping heads l1 which are of the same general construction as the tiebars 6 and are connected in the same manner.
It will be understood that it is of importance that the railway rails have the proper gage and by forming the tie-bars 6 ofpthe proper length and tapering the keys vertically the railway rails will not be moved latorally when the keys are driven in position to properly hold the tie-bars 6. In some instances it is desirable to brace the railway rails and for the proper bracing of the rails I provide a brace head 12 which is formed so as to come in direct contact with the vertical web of the railway rail. This brace head 12 is located between the flanges 3 in substantially the salne manner as the short railway clamping heads 11 and for the purpose of clamping the railway rails upon the bases the clamping heads 12 are provided with the shoulders 13, which are arranged for contact with the upper faces of the rail base 7 The brace blocks are also provided with the apertures 14, through which apertures the keys 10 are passed. For the purpose of allowing concrete to be seated in the bases the bases 1 are provided with the apertures 15.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a metallic railway tie of the class described, the combination of a rail base, said base provided with fianges adapted to abut against the longitudinal edges of the railway base flanges, said flanges provided with elongated slots and shouldered ends, a tie bar provided with a rail clamping head, said clamping head adapted to fit between the shouldered ends of' the fianges and a tapered key adapted to be located through the elongated slots and in contact with the upper edge of the tie bar.
