Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 5, 1916.
Application filed November 30, 1914. Serial No. 874,815.
To all 107mm t may concern:
Be it known that I, CUTLER S. FnwnLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Button-Hooks; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
rThis invention relates to button hooks and the primary object of the invention is to provide a. compact neat appearing button hook and a casing or housing therefor, which is adaptable for attachment to a key ring.
With the foregoing and other objects in view this invention consists in such novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the ao companying drawings and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters designate like or corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which Figure 1 is a view showing the improved button hook in a closed position and attached to a key ring. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view showing the improved button hook in a closed position. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view showing the button hook shank extended. Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view on the line L.1 -L1 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the end of the fiat spring which is mounted within the button hook housing.
Referringmore particularly to the drawings, 1 designates the housing or casing for the button hook, which is hollow and has an opening 2 formed in one end thereof, in which the shank 3 of the button hook is slidably seated. The section of the button hook which projects out of the casing 1 is curved to form a button engaging hook 4L, as is ordinary in the construction of button hooks. The inner end 5 of the button hook shank 3 has an enlarged head 4 formed thereupon, which projects transversely from the shank 3 upon opposite sides thereof, providing two abutments 6 and 7, one of which rides upon the inner surface of one edge of the casing 1, and the other of which is engaged by the end of a flat spring 8 which is rigidly mounted within the casing 1. The flat spring 8 has its end bent upwardlysubstantially at right angles to the main portion thereof as is clearly shown at 9, and transversely extending lugs 10 formed thereupon, which extend through openings 11 formed in the sides of the casing 1, securely hold ing the spring in place. The spring 8 is bent to assume an arcuate position intermediate of the upstanding end 9 thereof.
lThe head 4 of the shank 3 of the button hook has a cut out portion 12 formed in the outer end thereof which is adapted for receiving the lower section of the forward upturned end 9 of the spring 8 when the hook shank is in an extended position as is clearly shown in Fig. 8 of the drawings, for rigidly holding the hook in an extended position for use.
The end 13 of the casing 1, which is provided with the opening 2 therein, has an outstanding or longitudinally projecting abutment 14 formed integrally therewith, which has its outer end shaped to firmly fit against the end of the hook 4- for forming an eye for attachment to a key ring or the like, as is clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings.
ln reducing the invention to practice certain minor features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may necessitate alterations to which the patentee is entitled provided such alterations are comprehended within the scope of what is claimed.
What is claimed is A device of the class described including a casing, a shank slidable in said casing, said shank having its inner end enlarged providing laterally projecting lugs, on opposite sides thereof, a curved spring located in said casing, the medial portion of said spring abutting one wall of the casing, said spring having its opposite ends bent transversely to the body thereof, transversely extending lugs formed upon said bent ends, said one side wall of said casing being provided with openings at opposite ends thereof, through which said transversely extending lugs of the spring extends for holdingsaid spring properly positioned within the casing, Said Vupwardly bent ends of said spring adapted shank forming an eye for attaching said casforv engagement With'the enlarged head of ing to a ring. lo
