UNITED SVTATESEPATENT QFFICE.
c .-oLIViEt listini'ANpERsoNgoFNAsHVILLQtiENNEssEE DETACHABLE TYPE. I
To all 'whomz't may concern.'
Be it known that I,- OLIvER PERRY soN, va citizeny of. the `United States. residing at Nashville, in the'county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful AImprovements in Detachable Type; and I elo-hereby declare the following to be a full. clear. and exact description of the invention, such will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
'My invention relates to new. and useful improvements in detachable type and particularly to that class used in connection with typewriters, adding machines. andthe like, and lmy object is to provide an extra type adapted to be quickly connected with the type bar of the machine. And a furt-her object is to provide means for holding the. type in position until such time as it is desired to remove or change the same.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter set forth and more particularly' pointed out in the accoi'npanying specification.
In the accompanying drawings which are made a part of this application, Figure 1 is a detail elevation of a type bar. showing my detachable type applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the detachable type and securing means in section. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the type bar and detachable type. Fig. -l is a similar view. showing the manner of releasing the detachable type. Fig. 5 is an elevation partly in section of a different form of type bar. and Fig. 6 is a similar view of a still different form of detachable type and fastening means.
Referring to the drawings in which similar` reference numerals designate corresponding partsthroughout the several views. 1 indicates the type bar which may be. constructed in the usual or any preferred manner and 2 indicates the type shank. 3 the usual form of head for the type shank and 4 indicates the type secured to the type head.
In order to quickly change the character of the type I provide a housing 5. the lower edge of which is open to receive the head 'said housing having type G attached thereto and positioned over theA regular type 1L and coperating with the platen`of the machine the same as the regular type. In order to hold the casing firmly in engagement with Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Deo. 5, 1916.
the head 3, the angle-shape spring 7 is prov1ded, the vertical portion of the spring heilig secured to one end section of the housing by means of a rivet S. the horizontal portion of the spring T extending below the head 3 and impinging thereagainst. and to increase4 the locking action of the spring' with the head. a recess- 9 is formed in the lower face of the head 3 with which coperates a projection 10 formed by striking up a portion ofthe horizontal end of the spring. In attaching or removing this form ot' housing. the horizontal portion of the spring T swung laterally out of the path of the head so that the housing can be readilv removed from or introduced over the head portion of the spring. After the housing` is properly positioned over the head 3. the horizontal portion of the spring is forced below the head and the projection 10 snapped into engagement with the recess 9.
thereby securely holding the type in engagement with the head. until sueh time as it is desired.to remove the same.
In Fig. 5 of the drawings. the .housing 5 is shown attached to a different form of type bar 1l. in that the type 12 is attached directly to the type bar. lthe housing being attached to this form of type bar the same as in Figs. l and 2.
In Fig. 6 of the drawings. I have. shown a different form of housing. in that one end wall thereof is dispensed with. so that the housing 13 can be slipped endwise over the head ll. and in this instance. the horizontal portion of the spring l5 passes below the head l-l without swinging movement thereof and the projection thereon engage.` the recess in the lower face of the head. In this construction. the usual form of type shank and head .is removed from the ,type bar and the head l-l, substituted therefor. the ordinaryitype carried by the head being omitted. IYhen a head of this class is used and the form of type is to be changed. it requires the introduction of a different housing over the head each time the type is changed. It will also be understood that when type bars having the type secured directly thereon are encountered. in which ditliculty is experienced in attaching the housing. a special form of type bar is to be substituted therefor and so arranged as to readily receive thc special form of detachable type.
Ila ving thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by LettersPatent of the Ynited States, is
l. The combination with a type bar and the type carrying head thereon. of a housing having type thereon, and an angle shaped spring pivoted to the housing having a projection thereon adapted to interlock with' the type carrying head.
The combination with a type 'bar and a head therefor. having a recess, of a housing having type attached thereto, and an angle shaped spring having a projection adapted to enter said recess and secure the housing to said head.
3. The combination with a ,type bar and a head therefor, having a recess, of a lionsing having type attached thereto, and an angle lshaped spring pivotally secured to the end of the housing and adapted to swing' laterally thereon. said spring having a projection adapted to enter said recess and secure the housing to said head.
In testilnon)v whereotl I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
