Description
H. WATANABE.
TIE PLATE.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 16, ISIS.
w N d m Du t RYUSUKE WATANABE, OF GRANGER, WYOMING.
TIE-PLATE.
Application filed June 16, 1916.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RYUSUKE "WATANABE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Granger, in the county of Sweetwater, State of Wyoming, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tie-Plates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to tie plates.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of tie plate whereby the longitudinal movement of a railway rail associated with the tie plate will increase the clamping action between the plate and the rail.
A further object of the invention is to provide a tie plate which will be simple in construction, eliicient in use and relatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a fragment of a railway tie having the improved tie plate mounted thereon and supporting a rail. Fig. 2, a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a side view of a portion of the wedging element; Fig. 5, a perspective of the body member of the tie plate, and Fig. 6, a perspective of the wedge member of the tie plate.
Referring to the drawings A indicates a railway tie and B a railway rail, the latter including the usual base 10.
The improved tie plate comprises a body C provided with spike openings 11 and a shoulder 12 which is adapted to engage one Specification of Letters .E'atent.

edge of the base 10 of the rail C as shown. The body C is provided with the ribs 13 for the purpose of strengthening the same. The body C at the shoulder 12 is provided with an inwardly directed securing flange 14, while an outwardly inclined rib 15 is formed on said body at one side thereof. It will be noted that the securing flange 14: overlies the base 10 of the rail B.
The wedge member of the tie plate is indicated generally at D and comprises a body portion 16 in the form of a plate one end of which terminates in an inwardly directed securing flange 17 which overlies the base 10 of the rail B on the side of the latter opposite to the flange 14. The body 16 at the end thereof remote from the flange 17 is provided with a lateral extension 18 which is inclined to the body 16 and provided on its inner side with a groove 19 corresponding in cross section to the rib 15 and adapted to receive the latter. It will be understood that when the parts are assembled as shown in Fig. 1 the plate 16 is disposed beneath the rail base 10 and is slightly spaced from the adjacent edge of the body C. With the parts in this position it will be apparent that should the rail B move in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1 the wedge member will move with the rail and as a result of the wedging action between the extension 18 and the body C it will be obvious that the clamping action of the tie plate on the rail will be progressively increased.
It will be noted that the lateral extension 18 is provided on its under side with teeth 18 which are inclined toward the body D and are adapted to engage the tie to prevent outward movement of the body D and the parts carried thereby.
What is claimed is A tie plate comprising a body member having a shoulder thereon adapted to be engaged by the base of a rail, a retaining flange formed with the member and partly overlying the latter, the outer face of the body being provided with an inclined portion disposed at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the body, and a Wedge member in- In testimony whereof, I aflix my signacluding a base filate, a retaining fflange on ture, in the presence of two witnesses. the end of the ase plate remote rom tie r T retaining flange on the body, and a lateral RYUSUIXE VATAL extension on the other end of the base plate Witnesses: having an inclined face cooperating with BUNNSSUKE ONsTo, the inclined face on the body. KIKUJIRO SATO.
