IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,373, dated October 31, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK A. FARLEY, of Pine Meadow, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improved Washing-Machine, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a central vertical lengthwise section. Fig. 2 is a central vertical transverse section.
60 indicates a meta-l boX, like to a common square-cornered wash-boiler, having a cover, a slotted at one end, a to permit the vibration of the arm, by which the agitator within is rocked to and fro. WVithin this exterior box is hung an agitator composed of the parti-circular sides I) I), connected together by chutes and buckets. Bearing-pins b b are attached to the inner sides of the ends of the box a, on which turn the bearings 11 D which are attached to the sides I) b, thus allowing the agitator to rock within the boiler a. 0 indicates small chutes beveled on the side which faces toward the chute d, and set, as shown in the drawing, so as to force water through and into the agitator when in motion. 61 indicates a chute with a concave bevel on both sides projecting both above and below the chutes 0, so as to force water into the interior of the agitator when rocked in either direction. 0 6 indicate chutes with straight bevels on both sides, and projecting both above and below the chutes 0. At the top of the agitator, on both sides, are buckets composed of the chutes ff and the close back f, which will catch and raise and pour on the clothes within the agitator a quantity of water at each vibration of the agitator. When the bucket moves downward its chute f will force water within the agitator with great velocity. From one of the sides I), through the slot in the cover, rises the arm g, to the upper end of which is jointed the arm h, by the means of which the operator is enabled to sit at some little distance from the stove so as to escape the heat.
This machine can be used either on or off the stove. When used with boiling water it is better to set it on the stove. By the rocking of the agitator fiom side to side the clothes are made to fall from one side to the other within the agitator, and the water is poured on them and forced through them.
I claim as my invention- 1. The construction shown of the chutes c d c, and of the buckets at the top of the agitator, as parts of a washing-machine, and used and operated substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the parts specified in the immediately-precedin g clause with the parti-circular end pieces b b, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination of the agitator, made substantially as described, with-the arm g, and the arm h jointed thereto, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
' FREDERICK A. FARLEY.
