INVENTUF? STANLEY T. HONDA, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
CLOTHES-RACK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 31, 1916.
Application filed February 23, 1916. Serial No. 79,941.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STANLEY T. RONDA, a citizen of Russia, and a resident of T0- ledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and use ful Clothes-Rack; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inventiomsuch as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to clothes racks, and has particularly for its object the provision of an adjustable curtain hanging rack or member for the clothes rack described and claimed in my prior United States Letters Patent No. 1,180,436, dated April 25, 1916, whereby to enhance the practicability and commercial value thereof.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, and While, in its broader aspect, it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a perspective view of a preferred embodiment thereof in open p0sition is illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the wall-plate, having a notch 2 in its upper end for receiving a supporting nail 3 or other suitable projecting part. A bar 4 pivotally projects forward from the lower portionof the plate 1, and has a hat support 5 preferably foldably rising from its outer end and provided above the bar with a for wardly projecting finger 6. A tongue 7 is slidingly mounted on the bar 4 and is provided above the bar with an opening 8 for permitting the upper end of the tongue to be hooked over the nail 3. The tongue is intended to engage any one of a series of notches 9 provided in the lower edge of the bar 4 at the inner end thereof and to cooperate with the plate 1 to engage a nail 3 and support the bar 4 in proper relation thereto, as is fully described in my said former application. The bar 4 is intended to support a plurality of clothes hangers adapted for hanging thereon.
A U-shaped member 10 has the free ends of its legs pivotally attached to the plate 1 in horizontally spaced relation and above the plane of the bar 4, as to ears 11 on the plate, and has its forward looped end disposed in advance of the support 5 in posi tion for its loop to rest loosely on the finger 6 when the rack is in setup position. A. second U-shaped member 12 of substantially the same length, but a little broader than the member 10, straddles said member and has its leg terminals in sliding engagement with the legs of the member 10. One leg of the member 12 is preferably in permanent sliding engagement with the respective leg of the member 10, as shown at 13, while the other leg of the member 12 is in removable hooked engagement with the respective leg of the member 10, as at 14. The connection or bearing 13 is elongated lengthwise of the leg on which it slides to support the member 12 in alined relation to the member 10. A curtain 15 is hung from the member 12, and, when said member is in closed relation to the member 10, is intended to drape around and protect from dust and dirt any clothes hanging from the rack bar 4. The transverse spacing of the adjacent legs of the members 10 and 12 prevents the legs of the inner member from interfering with the draping of the curtain from the outer member.
It is evident that the curtain carrying member 12 can be moved to its open or outwardly extended position with respect to the member 10 when clothes are being placed on or removed from the rack, so that the curtain will not interfere therewith, and also that thehooked end 14 of the member 12 can be disengaged from the member 10 when it is desired to place a curtain on or remove it from the member 12.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specificconstruction, arrangement or form of the parts, as it is capable of numerous modifications without departing from the spirit of the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
1. The combination with a clothes rack having spaced horizontally disposed guide parts, of a U-shaped curtain carrying member having the end of one of its legs provided with an elongated bearing in sliding engagement with one of said parts and having the end of its other leg in removable hooked sliding engagementwith the other of said parts to facilitate the placing on or removal of a curtain from said member.
2. The combination with a clothes rack having a horizontally projecting rack bar and guide parts disposed in horizontally spaced relation above said rack bar longitudinally thereof, of a U-shaped curtain carrying member of greater width than the space between said guide parts to adapt it to straddle said parts and to have its legs disposed without the same in spaced relation thereto, one leg of said member having an elongated bearing in sliding contact with one of said parts and the other leg of the member having its end in removable sliding engagement with the other of said parts.
3. The combination with a clothes rack having a wall plate, a rack bar projecting therefrom and a U-shaped member projecting from said plate above the rack bar with its legs horizontally spaced and its looped end supported by a portion of the rack bar, of a second U-shaped member straddling said first member and having its legs con nected to the legs of said first member for sliding engagement therewith, said second member being adapted to carry a curtain.
4. The combination with a clothes rack having a wall plate, a rack-bar and a U- shaped member projecting from said wall plate, said member having its legs horizontally spaced and disposed above the rack bar and having its outer end supported by the rack bar, of a U-shaped curtain carrying member straddling said first member with its legs in transversely spaced relation member carried by said first member for limited longitudinal sliding movements relative thereto. 7 d
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name to this specification.
STANLEY T. RONDA.
