Description

52. COMPOSITIONS,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J'OSEPH W. HENNIClH, JR., OF BOG-ALUSA, LOUISIANA.
CLEANSING AND PAINT-REMOVING COMPOUND.
No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. HENNICH, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Bogalusa, in the parish of Washington and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cleansing and Paint-Removing Compounds; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to improvements in cleansing and paint removing compounds in which a number of cleansing ingredients are held in suspension in a suitable vehicle, such, for instance, as water, to be applied with a. cloth, or otherwise, to painted, varnished, or other surfaces to restore the original luster.
The ingredients uniting to provide the improved compound are herein grouped into two formulas, the one being particularly adapted for application to remove varnish, grease, and accumulations of foreign matter; while the second formula, which includes the elements of the first formula, has
been found to yield excellent results in removing paint and the like.
The first formula consists in a composition of matter containing benzol, ac e t qpe, capstic soda, and a vehicle, Ffih as water. These ingredients are preferably united into A *5- the compound in the following proporcaustic soda, one pound; and water, in about tions:--benzo1, one pint; acetone, one pint;
three quarts, to complete a gallon of the mixture.
f'lghe srlecond formula flggnsists prefix-ably o enzo acetone, ara nitric aci gge; tic acid, caustic'soda, and a velilcle, such as water. Such ingredients are advantageously mixed together in the following proportions:caustic soda, one and onehalf pounds; paraffin wax, one-quarter of a pound; benzol, one pint; acetone, one pint; acetic acid, two ounces; nitric acid, one-half of an ounce; and water, two and threefourths quarts.
The compositions of matter, as com- Patented Oct. 10, 1916.

pounded in accordance with the above formulas, have been put into practical use; and having been thoroughly tested, have been found to produce excellent results; such compounds yielding distinct advantages over other compounds purporting to produce similar results, and of which latter compounds-I am aware there are a variety in the trade.
The compounds as now known and in use are of a noxious and sickening odor, which is found to have an injurious effect on the persons using them, and in many cases such compounds contain ingredients poisonous to the skin. Moreover, compounds as now in use, are quite generally inflammable and explosive, and on this account dangerous, while evaporating and losing strength rapidly. Furthermore, after applying such compounds as are now in use containing turpentine, benzene, gasolene, or alcohol, the paint must be subsequently removed by the use of putty knives or scrapers; while the compound, as provided in accordance with the second formula of the present invention, so softens the grease, dirt, varnish, paint, or the like, as to permit the same to be readily removed with water applied by a brush, sponge, or hose.
The present compounds have been put to practical tests in removing grease and dirt from railroad cars, tanks, etc., and have been found to yield excellent results, accomplishing the work quickly, with less material, and with a saving of time and labor over results heretofore obtained. The comdescribed purposes, the constituent ingredione half of an ounce; and water, two and ents of which in substantially the proporthree quarters quarts; substantially as detions mentioned are: caustic soda, one and scribed.
