UNITED STATES JOHN BAUER, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARNESS-TRIMMINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,914, dated October 17, 1871.
To all 'whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN BAUER, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in Harness- Mountings, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to protect the sewing or seams ofthe leather or other covering of harness-mountin gs (viz., hooks, buckles, rings, Sto.) from contact with other portions of the harness or other objects, which, from friction or contact, tend to wear and destroyT the sewing, rendering the covering useless, and soon requiring re-covering, and to make the covering of the mountin gs last as long as the set of harness on which they are used; the nature of which consists in making a groove in the periphery, face, or edge of the uncovered iron mounting, (see Figr. 4 and 5,) immediately under the sewed seam of the covering, and pressing the seam, when sewed, into the said groove, by means of which the sew'ed seam is brought below' or even with the facial surface of the covered mount-ing, is protected from contact with other objects, and rendered more durable than by the ordinary inode, in which the sewed seam projects above the surface of the covering, shown in dotted lines in Fig. 6, as Irwill further explain by referencev to the accompanying drawing, in which* Figure l represents a side elevation of one of the harness-moimtings embodying my invention; Fig. 2, an vedge view; and Fig. 3, a horizontal section of same, taken on line x of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is an elevation of the iron mounting previous to covering the same 5 and Fig. 5, a horizontal section, showing groove for reception of sewed seam. Fig. 6 represents the present mode of covering harnessmountings, in which the sewed seam projects above the face of the covering.
In the said drawing, A indicates a rein-guide, or one of a set of the harness-mountings referred to, of which B is the stein for screwing the same into a harness-saddle 5 C, the reinguide; C, the metallic lining 5 D, the leather or other covering; and E, the seam or sewing of the covering. F is the metallic rein-guide previous to covering, and G the groove for recep tion of the seam ofthe covering, and into which the seam is pressed below or even with the surface of the covered reinguide, as shown in Fig. 2.
What I claim as my invention is- In covered harness-inountings, the groove G for reception of the sewed seam E of the covering D, and pressing the seam E into said groove G below or even with the facial surface of the covering D of harness-mountings, substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
JOHN BAUER.
