MAX GfiTTNER, OF SGHMfiLLN, GERMANY.
ROTARY BLOWER.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 19, 1916.
- Application filed July 15, 1915. 7 Serial No. 39,980.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Max GiiT'rNER, civil engineer, a citizen of the German Empire, residing at 38 Markt, Schmiilln, Saxe-Altenburg, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary /Blowers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to rotary blowers or gas compressors of the type in which a cylindrical piston executes a continuous excentric movement within a cylindrical casing of greater diameter, either a tongue movably jointed to the casing wall or the piston being free to reciprocate within a longitudinal notch in the other part. 1
In blowers or compressors of the type aforesaid it has been proposed to cover the cylindrical surface of the piston with an elastic material in order to insure a tight fit between said surface and the wall of the casing, and each point of the piston surface coming in temporary contact with a certain point of the casing wall is thereby enabled to intimately adapt itself to it, so that the tight fit between the twoparts is constantly improving,
The present invention contemplates securing a tight fit between cylinder and casing by rendering the metallic surface of the solid piston elastic. To this end a' preferably ring shaped notch intersecting the entire piston is arranged at such a distance below the surface of the piston, that the part of the piston surrounding said notch This arrangement also enables the piston to suffer a certain deformation wherever its surface is in contact with the casing wall, the contact therefore taking place between cylindrical segments instead of mere lines. As the elastic part of the piston according to this invention consists of metal there is no need for frequently stopping the blower in order to replace said part, as is the case w1th the rubber coated pistons.
In the drawings aflixed to this specification the preferred form of a blower or compressor according to the present invention provided in the piston, f is a tongue freely working therein in a radial direction and jointed to the casing wall by a cylinder joint f.
k and k are the cylinder or casing covers. 0 is the gas inlet, p is the outlet preferably provided with a ball valve 10'. l
A notch n is provided in the piston at a certain distance from its outer surface, said notch extending all through the piston in a longitudinal direction and almost all around its center, so that its section has the appearance of a split ring. The distance between the notch and the outer surface of the piston is such that the part i of the piston inclosed between the notch and the piston surface is elastic to a certain extent.
The shaft 0 in rotating with the eccentric block 01 fixed on it causes the piston to execute a composite movement resulting from an oscillation around the pivot of the tongue f and a vertical oscillation along a straight line, this being of importance in so faras the single parts of the circumference of the piston are thus continually brought in contact with the same parts of the casing wall and the piston surface is thereby enabled to adapt itself in an always increasing degree to the inner surface of the casing.
Instead of fixing the tongue within the casing, it may as well be movably fixed within the piston, its opposite edge then working in a longitudinal notch in the casing body.
I claim In a rotary blower in combination, a cylindrical casing, a driving shaft extending through said casing along its middle axis, an eccentric fixed on said shaft, a cylindrical piston of substantially smaller diameter than the casing loosely mounted on said ee- 2 I 1,1ee,e11
centric and in contact with the inner wall of face at a distance sufiiciently small to render said casing, a tongue extending between the the part surrounding said notch elastic. 10 piston surface and the casing wall, said In testimony whereof I aflix my signature tongue being arranged to oscillate in a notch in presence of two witnesses.
in one of these parts and to reciprocate MAX GUTTNER. radially in a notch in the other part, and a Witnesses: substantially ring shaped notch in said pis- OTTO BERNDT,
