To all whom alt may concern Be it known that we, ANDERsoN W001 WARD and JESSE E. COLE, citizens of the United States, residing at Leeper, in the county of Wayne and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire Fence Stretching Clamps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
Our invention relates to devices "whereby wire fencing may be stretched, and particularly to the clamp for engaging the web of wire fencing.
The general object of our invention is to provide an improved clamp which when stretching force is applied to the fence will bind upon the wire web and securely hold it while the web is being pulled.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be readily applied, readily removed from engagement with the fence, which has two parts and these of a very simple construction.
Other objects will appear in the course of the following description.
Our invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a face view of our clamping device applied to a fence shown in conjunction with a wire tightener of ordinary construction; Fig. 2 is an enlarged top plan view showing the crimping action of the clamping bar 17; Fig. 3 is a top plan view, but showing the clamping bar 17 shifted to its released position.
Referring to these figures it will be seen that our clamp device comprises a base 10 which is preferably made of wood and has a length equal to or greater than the width of the web of wire fencing to be stretched or tightened. Passing through this base 10 are a plurality of bolts 11, the ends of which are laterally curved as at 12 to form approximately semi-circular seats 13. The inner face of the base 10 confronting the seat 13 is recessed, this recess having an inclined face 1 1 and a wall 15 extending out perpendicularly to the outer face of the base. Attached to the base 10 is a V-Shaped or U-shaped bail 16.
Coacting with the base 10, which base forms one of the clamping elements, is a clamping bar 17 which is preferably of steel or some like material and which is approximately rectangular in edges, however,

In the practical use of our invention the base 10 is disposed against one face of the web of fencing and the clamping bar 17 is engaged in the seats 13 in the manner illustrated in Fig. 8. The bail 19 is then to be moved toward the bail 16, which will cause the rounded edge of the bar 17 to bear against and crimp the wire fencing into the recess 14 and securely lock it therein. Strain is then applied to the hook 20. The strain on the web of wire will merely act to increase the binding action of the bar 17 and the greater the strain the tighter the bar 17 will engage with the wheel. To release the clamp from the fence it is only necessary to relieve the strain on the hook 20 and then shift the bail 19 away from the bail 16. It will be noted that the clamping bar 17 is of such a construction as to form an eccentric clam which when the bail 19 is forced toward 16 will cause sufiicient tension to hold the web A of wire securely while strain is being applied upon the pull hook and the fencing web. This clamp has been tried in practice and found to be extremely effective. When the strain is applied to the bails the clamp binds securely upon the web and prevents the web from slipping through the clamp. It is readily attached, readily detached, and

Having described our invention, what we claim is:
