STOVE-LID.
Application filed December 7, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CORNELIUS R. SULLI- VAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eureka, in the county of Humboldt and State of California, have invented a new and useful Stove-Lid, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention appertains to stove lids, and aims to provide a novel and improved stove lid of such construction, that it enables the amount of heat penetrating the lid, to be regulated or controlled, so that a maximum, minimum or intermediate heating effect is provided.
The object of the invention is the provision of a stove lid comprising a unique assemblage of the component parts, whereby the desired results are carried out in an ef fective and desirable manner, and in order that the utility of the lid will be enhanced.
It is also within the scope of the invention to provide a stove lid of the nature indicated, which is comparatively simple, nonencumbering, compact and inexpensive construction, and which is convenient, serviceable and efficient in use.
XVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will apper as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a diametrical section of the improved lid, taken on the line 11 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the lid taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a fragmental section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
In carrying out the invention, the lid comprises a pan or dish-shaped body or casting 1, having the fiat bottom 2, and the annular rim 3, which is preferably inclined or flared.
The rim 3 is provided at its upper edge with an outturned flange or lip 1 to fit and seat within the usual rabbet surrounding the opening in the top of the stove which receives the ordinary lid. The flange 4: is provided with an inner annular rabbet 1. The bottom 2 of thebody or casting 1 is preferably provided with a depending marginal or pe- Specification of Letters Patent.

ripheral rib 5, and a central annular rib 6, which ribs strengthen or reinforce the body. The bottom 2 of the body is provided with sectoral-shaped openings 7, preferably three in number and spaced equally apart.
Seated upon the bottom 2 and within the pan-shaped body 1, is a flat circular damper or plate 8, preferably in the form of a casting, and provided with a hub 8 at its center. The damper 8 is also preferably provided with an upturned marginal or peripheral strengthening rib 9, and radial ribs 10 between the rib 9 and hub 8. The damper 8 is provided with sectoral-shaped openings 11 therein, preferably of the same number, arrangement and size as the openings 7- of the body 1. The hub 8 of the damper is provided with a square or non-circular opening 12.
Seated within the rabbet 1 is a circular cover plate or disk 13, which may either be solid or perforated, and this is provided with a central depending boss 14 which has a square or non-circular portion 15 inserted into the opening 12 of the hub 8 and seating upon the central portion of the bottom 2 of the body 1 to uphold the central portion of the plate or disk 13, and to relieve the pressure of the marginal portion of the plate or disk 13 upon the bottom of the rabbet a, when a vessel is placed upon the lid. Thus, the boss 14 provides a pivot bearing for the plate or disk 13, whereby the plate or disk may be oscillated or turned readily, without there being an excessive amount of friction between the periphery of the disk 13 and the Walls of the rabbet 4 The disk 13 is maintained in place, by means of a retaining screw 16 passed up Wardly through an aperture 17 provided in the center of the bottom 2 of the body 1, and threaded upwardly into the boss 14, the lower head of the screw 16 bearing upwardly against the bottom 2 for holding the disk 13 and body 1 together. The shoulder l7 formed by the squared or non-circular portion 15 of the boss 1&1 overhangs the hub 8 of the damper 8, to retain the damper in place upon the bottom 2 of the body 1. Since the squared portion 15 of the boss 11 fits within the square opening 12 of the damper 8, the damper is constrained to rotate or oscillate with the disk 13.
The disk or top 13 is provided adjacent its periphery with a handle or lifter socket or receiving means 18, and a tongue 19 projects outwardly from the socket or portion 18, and lies between a pair of inwardly projecting stop lugs 20 carried by the rim 3 of the body 1. The lugs 20 are so arranged, that when the tongue 19 of the disk 18 bears against one lug, the openings 7 and 11 will be in register, whereas if the tongue 19 bears against the other lug, the openings 7 and 11 will be completely out of register, to close them. If desired, suitable markings may be provided upon the flange at and disk 13 to indicate when the openings 7 and 11 are closed and opened.
in use, the present lid is applied to the top of a stove in the usual manner, the flange 1 seating within the rabbet usually occupied by the lid, and the body 1 of the present lid will then depend through the opening in the top of the stove, to bring the disk or top 18 of the present lid approximately flush with the top of the stove. The vessel or other object to be heated may be readily seated upon the disk 13, and when the greatest heating effect is wanted, the disk 13 may be swung to bring the openings 11 of the damper 8 into registration with the openings 7 of the body 1, which allows the heated gases to pass upwardly readily through the openings 7 and 11 and into the space between the disk 13 and the damper 8 and bottom 2. The disk 13 may be readily turned by engaging the handle or lifter into the socket 18 and then swinging the handle or lifter, as will be apparent. By swinging the disk 13, the damper 8 may be swung to either partially or completely close the openings 7 and 11, when a modified or mini mum heating effect is desired. When the disk 13 is swung to bring the damper 8 to closed position, the openings 7 and 11 being closed, will, provide a dead air space between the disk 13 and the damper 8 and bottom 2, and as a result, a minimum heating effect is accomplished. The present lid therefore enables the heat to be regulated or controlled to a nicety, it only being necessary to rotate or swing the disk 18, and this can be done even though the lid 13 has the vessel standing thereon. The boss 11 of the disk 13 in supporting the disk, enables the disk to turn readily. It is also of advantage that the dead air space he provided between the disk 13 and damper 8, since this will reduce to a minimum the liability of the lid being burnt through.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

5. A stove lid comprising a pan-shaped body, the bottom of which has openings, a rotatable top carried by the body above the bottom thereof, a damper cooperable with the bottom of the body and having openings to be brought into and out of registration with the aforesaid openings, the damper being rotatable with the top, and means for limiting the rotatory movement of the top and damper relatively to the body.
(3.
