To all w hom it may concern:
Be it known that PHILIP DmHL, deceased, late a citizen of the United States, residing at Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, and MARTIN HEMLEB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elizabeth, in the county YandState aforesaid, did invent certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machine Loop-Talrers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This application is a division of our application Serial No. 662,595, filed November 27,1911.
The present improvement has for its object to provide `a thread-case for a lockstitch loop-taker wherein the thread-delivery eye or guiding element is so located as to effect the lead of the thread through the needle-aperture of the throat-plate in an advantageous manner relatively to the path of movement of the loop-taker beak and also in such wise as to insure a uniform tension upon the lower thread under all working conditions.
According to the present improvement, the peripheral side-wall of the rearwardly open-ended thread-case has therein a rearwardly open thread-slit extending part way to the front of the case which is provided upon the adjacent side'with a tongue extending crosswise of and spaced from the forward end of the case to afford a threaddelivery element between which and the forward end of the slit the thread has a fixed direction of lead beneath a peripheral tension spring for applying a drag upon the. thread on the periphery of the oase.
rThe invention will be understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front end view of a rotary hook provided withv a threadcase embodying the presentimprovements. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the thread-case with its carrier, Fig. 3 a plan and Fig. 4: a perspective view taken from the front vside of the thread-case. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a detail of the thread-case.
As disclosed more fully in our said application, the loop-seizing member comprises the ring 1 provided with the loopseizing beak 2 and having in its inner walll drical body 9 open at its inner or rearward,

In general constructive features, this case is similar to that of our Patent No. 1,125,669, of January 19, 1915, the front end of the bobbin-case being constructed with a cross-member comprising undercut guide-v ribs 10 having fitted thereto the springpressed latch-plate 11 adapted to engage the necked outer end of the journal-pin 6 from which it is disengaged by the shifting of the apertured lever plate 12 to detach the.

The peripheral wall of the thread-case is provided with an inclined threading slit 13 extending from the open inner end and terminating in an aperture 14 intermediate its ends. closed end of the threadcase is shown formed with a clearance cut 15 to receive the point of the needle in its loop-presenting position, and at one side of such cut nearest the threading slit a thread-guiding tongue 16 is produced by provision of a slit extending from the edge to the clearance cut adjacent the upper rib 10 and another cut which disconnects the edge of the tongue from the cylindrical wall .of the case, a threaddelivery aperture 17 being lthus-formed between the tongue and the adjacent edge of the side wall of the case. The aperture 17 is nearly closed at the end adjacent the clearance cut 15 by means of the inturned lip 18 of a spring-plate 19 rigidly or otherwise secured upon the free end of the tongue 16. By reference more particularlyl to Figs. 3 and 4, it will be observed that the tongue 16 extends beyond the laterally open apertureor orifice 17 relatively tothe direction of lead of the thread from the threading slit 13.
Secured upon the periphery of the threadcase by means of screws 20 and 21 is the tension spring 22 with its free operative portion overlying the space between the terminal aperture 14 of the threading slit and the forward or outer edge of the case adjacent the base of the tongue 16. The pressure of the spring upon the exterior of the threadcase may be adjusted by the usual manipulation of the screw 21.
A bobbin may be introduced in the open. end of the thread-case and the bobbin-thread a drawn through the threading slit 13, beneath the tension spring22, under the free end of the guide-tongue 16 and thence intermediate the confining lip 18 and the edge of the side wall into the aperture 17 from which the correct lead of the thread to the under face of the worlris insured in the operation of the loop-taker. As herein shown and described, the tongue 16 is connected with the body of the thread-case at the periphery thereof and at a point adjacent the tension-spring, its free end being extended crosswise of the thread-case, so as to form with the thread-case body an openended or self-threading7 thread-guiding slot with its open end farthest from the tension-spring and its closed end adjacent the latter. The lower thread is thus drawn beneath the tongue within a lateral extension of the needle-clearance cut 15 afforded by the aperture 17. The thread-case is locked against turning relatively to the stationary holding member l by engagement of its shoulders 23 and 24 with the edges of the notched tongue 4; of the holding member.
By providing a thread-delivery element at the front face of the thread-case as described, the thread issuing from the terminal aperture 14- of the threading slit passes over the outer periphery of the thread-case to the front edge and thence crosswise of the front end to the delivery aperture 17 whence it is led upwardly through the needle-aperture of the throatplate 25, land as the delivery aperture is fixed relatively to the thread-case, any abnormal pull upon the thread is in a direction edgewise of the tension spring, so as to have no effect in the normal action of the tension spring upon the thread.
To secure the best results in the loop-casting operation, it has been found desirable to lead the lower thread from substantially the front face of the bobbin-case and as directly as possible to the work. By this means the position of that portion of the thread between the thread-case and the throat-plate is normally such that only a slight further deiection thereof by means upon the carrier-tongue 4: is necessary to defleet it sufficiently to escape seizure by the loop-taker bealr 2, and uniformity of tension upon the lower thread is insured thereby as well as in the described lead of the thread beneath the tension spring.
lhile the front of the thread-case is shown herein. provided with an integral thread-guiding tongue, this feature is evidently not essential to the present improvement which may be somewhat modified in the form and relation of the parts within the scope of the present invention.
Having thus set forth the nature of the invention, what we claim herein is 1. In combination, a thread-case having a thread-cavity open at its rearward end and provided in its peripheral wall with a threading slit extending forwardly from the rearward end and having a thread-delivery element sustained upon its forward end with a laterally-open thread-orifice and a guiding tongue extending beyond said orifice relative to the direction of lead of the thread from said slit and with a clear thread-space between said tongue and the thread-cavity, and a tension spring overlying said thread-slit and acting upon the thread independently of said thread-delivery element.
2. The combination with a thread-case holder, of a cylindrical thread-case open at its rearward end and provided in its peripheral wall with a threading slit extendingy from the rearward end to a point intermediate its ends and with an overlying tension spring and constructed with a cross-member at its forward end sustaining a locking device whereby Iit is detachably secured to said holder, said thread-case being provided with a thread-delivery element extending crosswise of its -forward end and spaced from said cross-member to produce a thread-passage between them and affording a thread-delivery aperture closed at the side adjacent the threading slit and open at the opposite side.
3. The combination with a thread-case holder provided with a ournal-pin having a necked outer end, of a cylindrical threadcase open at its rearward end and having an axial hollow post fitted upon said journalpin and provided in its peripheral wall with al threading slit extending from the rearward end forwardly and with an overlying tension-spring and constructed with a crossmember at its forward end, said thread-case having connected thereto at the periphery adjacent said threading slit a thread-directing tongue extending crosswise of its forward end and spaced from said cross-member to produce a thread passage between them through which the thread may be drawn from said slit and outwardly beneath the tongue, and a locking device sustained by said cross member of the thread-case and comprising an element adapted for engagement with the necked extremity of said j ournal-pin.

The combination with a cylindrical thread-case open at its rearward end and provided in its peripheral wall with a threading slit extending from the rearward end to a point intermediate its ends and having a guiding tongue extending from the side of the oase containing said threading slit laterally crosswise of the forward end of the case and carrying a backwardly extending lip, of a tension spring overlying the peripheral wall of the ease between its forward end and the adjacent extremity of the threading slit. 15
