To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES W. LAURELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Containers for Mounted Photographs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which,

This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in containers for mounted photographs and the like, the object being to construct a substantial and convenient retainer which will protect mounted photographs from being bent in transit and at the same time enable the insertion or removal of a particular photograph from the container, or either side thereof, at will.

In the drawings 1 indicates the covers of the container which are made preferably of some stiff material and flexibly connected together by means of the material 2 in a manner well known in the bookbinders art. On the inner face of each backing or cover 1 is a box-like housing 3 preferably closed on all sides, except the inner through which open side the flaps of the photographic folders or mounts are inserted in any desired position relative to other photographs in the container, and by virtue of which any particular photograph in its mount or folder may be removed. I prefer to have these inwardly opening pockets on both covers and to arrange photographs on each side as the folders of one side prevent the accidental displacement of those on the opposite side.

Fig. 3 shows one of the photograph mounts or folders removed in which 4: is the back wall thereof on which a photograph is pasted or otherwise fastened; 5 is the face flaphaving an opening 6 cut therein, see Fig. 1, through which the picture is exposed; and 7 is the covering flap designed to fold upon the face flap to protect the Specification of Letters Patent.

picture on the mounted photograph when as an entirety it is removed from the container. This covering flap also serves as the medium for. holding the photograph folder 1n position in the container, as it is designed to be inserted in the box-like receptacle 3, before referred to.

In Fig. 4 I have shown a modified form of my invention in which flaps 8 and 9 may be employed on the covers 1, folding from the bottom or top thereof as desired and havlng openings 10 in their free edges through which ribbons or other securing dev1ces may be passed through registering openings 11 in the back 1. Instead of flaps hinged at one edge to the covers 1, I may arrangeone or more permanent or temporary strips on the inner faces of the covers 1 to engage and hold the covering flaps 7 of the photograph mounts.

As stated before, I prefer to have both sides of the covers 1 equipped with means for retaining the covering flap 7 as in this way the mounted photographs on one side engage and hold in position those on the opposite side of the container. In inserting the covering flap 7 under the engaging means on the inner face of the left-hand or front cover of the container, the flaps of the photograph mount will occupy the same relation to each other when assembled in the container as when removed therefrom; but, if it is desired to have the picture face forward in the group of photograph mounts on the rear or back cover, it is necessary to fold the covering flap 7 back so that it will fold in the opposite direction.

By my construction it will be seen that photographers can deliver mounted photographs in a substantial and simple and cheap container which will enable the removal or insertion of certain pictures on either side of the container at will.

As illustrated in Fig. 4, the arrangement is equally adaptable to a binder having the characteristic of expansibility, whereby it may be adjusted to accommodate varying numbers of mounts.

I am aware that the device is susceptible of other changes and modifications without departing from the spirit and the scope of my invention,

What I claim is:

1. In a container for photograph mounts, the combination of two backs or covers flexibly connected together each being pro vided with means on its inner face for receiving or containing the flaps of a plurality of separate photograph mounts, and a plurality of separately removable photograph mounts having flaps which are retained in position on the inner faces of the backs or covers, the 'mounts held by one cover being oppositely disposed to those held by the other cover whereby said mounts, when in position on the covers, assist in holding each other in position. a

2. A container for photograph mounts comprising the combination of two flexibly connected backs or covers each provided with means on its inner face for retaining the flaps of the mounts, and groups of separate mounts each of which groups has flaps which are designed to be oppositely disposed and held in position by the retaining means on the covers, said mounts being separately insertib-le and removable into and from position.
