FRANK L. MCCORMICK, OF NORTH TONAWANDA, NEVV YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE RUDOLPH WURLITZER MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF NORTH TONAWANDA, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
MUSIC-ROLL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 5, 1916.
Application filed December 21, 1912. Serial No. 737,937.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK L. McCon- MICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Tonawanda, in the county of Niagara and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Music-Rolls, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the music rolls of automatic musical instruments, and more particularly to a roll in which the spool is removable from the roll, so that the same spool may be used for different rolls, thus saving the cost of a separate spool for each roll.
The object of my invention is the provision of a simple and inexpensive music roll of this kind which permits the ready transfer of the spool from one roll to another and in which the flanges are adjustable to compensate for variations in the width of the music sheet due to atmospheric or climatic influences.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a music roll embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of the spool with its parts separated. Figs. 3 and 4 are cross sections on the correspondingly numbered lines in Fig. 1.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
1 indicates the music roll or perforated sheet which is wound upon and attached to a tube or hollow core 2 of paper or other suitable material. Removably inserted in this core is the spool or spindle 3 which is provided at one end with the usual clutch wings 4 adapted to interlock with the clutch member of the driving mechanism, not shown. Mounted on the spool are the flanges or heads 5 and 6 between which the music sheet is confined and guided. One of these flanges, say the flange 5, may be permanently secured to the spool and its hub extends into the core 2 and is provided with a key-way or groove 7 which receives a key or lug 8 carried by said core, whereby the latter and the music sheet are compelled to turn with the spool. The hub of the other flange 6 extends into the adjacent end of' the core 2 and is provided with an internal key-way 9 which extends from end to end of the hub and interlocks with a key 10 on the spool, to I compel said hub to rotate with the spool.
Surrounding the spool between a collar or shoulder 11 thereof and the inner end of the hub of the flange 6 is a spring 12 which tends constantly to shift said flange outwardly on the spool to increase the distance between the flanges. The portion of the spool which carries the slidable flange,6 is provided with a screw thread 13 with which engages an adj usting nut 14 bearing against the outer side of said flange. Upon screwing the nut 14 toward t-hefixed flange 5, the movable flange 6 is shifted in the same direction, compressing the spring 12, while upon unscrewing the nut more or less, the spring causes the flange 6 to follow up the nut, increasing the distance between the flanges. In this manner, the eflective-length of the spool can be readily adjusted to compensate for warping or shrinkage of the music sheets and prevent crumpling of its edges. To remove the spool from the roll, it is only necessary to unscrew the nut 14 from the spool, when the latter with the fixed flange 5 and the spring 12 can be withdrawn from the roll and the other flange 6 and inserted in another roller.
By this construction, one and the same spool can be used for a variety of music rolls, effecting a material saving in the cost of new rolls after the purchase of the first one with the spool.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination of a music roll having a tubular core provided with an internal lug, a screw-threaded spindle removably arranged in said core and provided within the same with a key and a shoulder, said spindle extending throughout the length of the core, a fixed roll-flange and a slidable roll-flange both mounted on the spindle, the hub of the fixed flange having a groove which receives said lug, the hub of the slidable flange having a groove which receives said key, a spring arranged on the inner side of said slidable flange and surrounding the spindle between said shoulder and the hub of the slidable flange, and an adjusting nut applied to the spindle and bearing against the outer side of the slidable flange.
2. A spool adapted to be removably inserted in a hollow music roll, comprising a screw threaded spindle provided at one end with a fixed flange and near its opposite end With a shoulder and a key, the hub of said adjusting nut engaging the spindle 0n the 10 flange having a groove adapted to receive a outer side of the slidable flange.
lug of the music roll, a second flange slidably Witness my hand this 10th day of Decern' mounted on the opposite end of the spindle ber, 1912. and having its hub provided With a key-Way which receives said key, a spring arranged on the inner side of said slidable flange and Witnesses: applied to the spindle between said shoulder CARL MAYER, and the hub of said slidable flange, and an C. F. GEYER.
