Be it known that I, LEE M. PAGE, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Samson, in the county of Geneva and State of Alabama, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Stop Mechanism, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Tliisinvention has for its general object to provide a simple, convenient, and efficient mechanism for automatically arresting the motion of a moving part at a predetermined but variable point.
The foregoing and other more particular objects of the invention, together with means whereby the same may be carried into effect, will best be understood from the following description of one form or em-.
bodiment thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawings. 1t will be understood, however, that the particular construction and adaptation described and shown have been chosen for illustrative purposes merely, and that the invention, as defined by the claims hereunto appended, may be embodied in other forms and utilized for other purposes without departing from the spirit and scope thereof.

For convenience of description the invenf tion is herein illustrated as applied to a.
measuring device for measuring predetermined lengths of lace, ribbon, or other fabric more fully shown and described and claimed in a prior application for Letters Patent filed by me January 10,1914, Serial No. 811,323, of which this case is a div-ision. The particular devices controlled yby the stop mechanism, however, form no portion of the present invention.

and a pressure roller 49. The measuring roller 48 is fixed upon a shaft 50 journaled in the uprights 47 and is'provided with a gripping or anti-slipping lsurface `of any suitable character, as by forming said surface with projections as shown in Fig. 1, or by providing a smooth surface as shown in Fig. 2 and covering the lsaine with a suitable friction material, such as rubber. The roller49 is mounted on a shaft 51 the ends of which are received in slots 52 in the uprights 47 and are engaged by springs 53, the opposite ends of which are secured to said uprights, whereby said roller 49 is yieldingly pressed toward the roller 48, but may be separated therefrom in order to permit the insertion between said rollers of the material to be measured. The measuring roller 48, as shown, is provided with an arm or tappet 54 (see Fig. 2) adapted, at each complete rotation of said roller, to engage the operating arm 55 of a register of any suitable or well known character secured to the top of one of the uprights 47, said operating arm 55l being normally held against a stop pin 57 in the position shown in Fig.v 2, by means of a spring 58. The register is arranged to be actuated at each operation of the arm 55 an amount corresponding tothe lengthof the periphery of thev measuring roller 48.
62 denotes a framework secured to and supported by one of the uprights 47 of the measuring device. Mounted in the framework -62 is a spring or other motor 63 connected by gears 64, 65 with the shaft 50 of the measuring roller 48,v said shaft being, if
. desired, connected through gears 66 and 67 with an escapement wheel 68 adapted to cooperate with a pallet (not shown) for the purpose of controlling movement of said shaft. The screw 76 is formed with a longitudinal groove or way 78 (see Fig. 3) which receives a key or spline 79 (see Fig. 2) on the inside of the sleeve 77, so that said screw 76, while freely movable longitudinally in the sleeve 77, is prevented from turning therein. The screw 76 is further provided with a head 8O adapted, when said screw reaches-the limit of its movement toward the left as shown in Fig. l, to engage the hub of the gear 74. Said gear 74 is formed in two parts connected by a link 81 and latch 82, while the hub thereof is formed with an internal groove which receives an annular flange 83 on the framework 62 at the end of the sleeve 77, whereby when the latch 82 is fastened said gear 74 will be rotatably secured to said framework and clamped in operative position about said screw. Within the groove 78 the screw 76 is provided with graduations (see Fig. 8), said graduations, in the embodiment of the invention shown, representing yards and fractions thereof.
rIhe operation is as follows. To adjust or set themechanism, the latch 82 is released, the parts of the gear 74 separated, and the screw 76 drawn outwardly to a. point at which the figure in the groove 78 corresponding to the amount of material desired appears at the edge of the hub 75. The two halves of Ithe gear 74 are thereupon closed about the screw 76, the latch 82 made fast, the end of the material to be measured inserted between the rollers 48 and 49, and the motor 63 started. Said motor, through the gears 64 and G5, will thereupon rotate the roller 48, causing the material to` be fed between said rollers. Rotation of the shaft 50, through the gears 69, 70 and 71, shaft 72, and pinion 73, causes rotation of the gear 74, and the latter, by engagement of its threaded hub with the screw 76, causes said screw to be moved longitudinally in the sleeve 77 toward the left as shown in Fig. 1, until the head 80 is brought into engagement with the hub 75, whereupon movement of the screw 76 is arrested, and the entire mechanism, including the measuring roller 48, stopped.
Having thus described my invention I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. The combination with a mechanism to be stopped, of a stop mechanism therefor comprising a screw, a member in threaded engagement therewith, one of said lastnamed parts being held against longitudinal movement and being operatively connected with and rotated by said first-named mechanism, and the other of said parts being held against rotation, and means for limiting the relative longitudinal movement of said screw and member, whereby the rotation of said rotated part and the movement of the mechanism connected therewith are stopped.
2. The combination with a mechanism to be stopped, of a stop mechanism therefor comprising a member operatively connected with and rotated by said first-named mechanism, an angular-ly fixed but longitudinally movable screw having threaded engagement with said member, and means for limiting the longitudinal movement of said screw, whereby the rotation of said member and the movement of the mechanism connected therewith are stopped.-
3. The combination with a mechanism to be stopped, of a stop mechanism therefor comprising a screw, a member in threaded engagement therewith, one of said lastnamed parts being held against longitudinal movement and being operatively connected with and rotated by said first-named mechanism, and the other of said parts being held against rotation, said screw and member being disengageable to permit initial relative adjustment thereof, means for indicating said adjustment, and means for limiting the relative longitudinal movement of said screw and member, whereby the rotation of said rotated part and the movement of said mechanism connected therewith are stopped.
4. The combination with a mechanism to be stopped, of a stop mechanism therefor comprising a frame, a member mounted to rotate on said frame but held against axial movement thergon, said member being operatively connected with and rotated by said first-named mechanism, a sleeve on said frame having an internal spline, a screw in said sleeve having a longitudinal groove to receive said spline, said screw being in threaded engagement with said rotated member so as to be longitudinally moved when said member is rotated, said screw and member being disengageable to permit initial relative adjustment thereof, and said screw having within said groove a scale to indicate said adjustment, and means for limiting the longitudinal movement of said screw.
5. In a stop mechanism, a split gear having an internally threaded hub, a longitudinally movable screw passing through said hub and coperating with the threads thereof, meansfor clamping the parts of said gear in position on said screw, and means for limiting the longitudinal movement of said screw. 6. In a stop mechanism, a rotating lnember having a threaded hub and a longitudinally movable screw passing through and engaging the threads of said hub, said screw having a head adapted to engage said hub and limit the longitudinal movement of said screw in one direction.
7. ln a stop mechanism, a split gear having an internally threaded hub, an adjustable, longitudinally movable screw passing through said hub and coperating With the threads thereof, said sereW having a scale cooperating With said hub to indicate the adjustment thereof and a head adapted to engage said hub and limit the longitudinal movement of said screw in one direction, and detachable means for clamping the 10 parts of said gear about said screw.
