To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES Pon rnous, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Fresno, county of Fresno, and State of California, have invented a new and useful Combination Elbow and Valve, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a combination suction pipe flange, elbow, and a combined flap-puppet-check valve. Its objects are to have the valve as near the water as possible,
.to have the valve open in such manner that it will not obstruct the opening in the suc tion pipe, the elimination of all joints which might leak air below the valve, ready accessibility to the valve, means of adjusting the position ofthe flap when open so as to control the water hammer at different heights of discharge, means for removing the flap of valve for inspection or repair without removing any part exposed to the water and liable to injury from rust, and other objects which will hereinafter appear. I accomplish these, and other objects hereinafter referred to, by means of the device hereinafter described, and shown on the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 shows a perspective view of the suction pipe, the elbow and pump. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the suction pipe and elbow, showing the valve installed thereon. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the lid used to cover an opening in the elbow. Fig. 4 is a top view of the valve complete. Fig. 5 is an enlarged view of the slotted hinge when the valve flap is open and Fig. 6 is a view of the same parts shown in Fig. 5 when the valve flap is closed.
In said drawing B represents the suction pipe which terminates at the top with an ordinary screw thread, I).
C is a flange constructed to be screwed on the top of pipe B. On the upper side of flange C is an annular seating c. This annular seating is constructed so the seat is broad enough to receive the valve flap. For the purpose of making the joint where flange C is screwed on the suction pipe positively air tight, I have extended the threaded portion of the flange through the annular seating, screwed the suction pipe to the top of such annular seating, and machined the end of the pipe to a common plane with the top of the annular seating c.
The seat of the valve being the flange on the top of the suction pipe there is no chance for leakage of air into the pipe as the end of the pipe is made part of the valve seat so that the pump seldom, if ever loses its priming. Where the valve is in the elbow orits equivalent, there is always the face of the suction pipe flange, where it is connected to the elbow or its equivalent and the thread of pipe and flange to leak air and allow the water in the pipe to become the same level as the water in the well. As the valve seat is the flange of the suction pipe, said valve seat is brought nearer to the water than any other valve accessible without taking the pipe out of the well. The advantage of this is that the pump is much easier primed and seldom requires a special priming pump.
D is an elbow having flanges at each end, the flange at the lower end K, fitting on flange C to which it is clamped by means of ordinary bolts, or cap screws. I have formed the elbow preferably in the form of a sector with an opening 7 as near the lower end as possible. This opening can be any shape but must be large enough to admit the valve flap E.
F is a cover for opening 7, is of the same approximate shape, and will be more fully described herein. I have preferred to construct valve flap E circular in shape, with means thereon for lining the under side thereof with some pliable material.

Projections J can be formed integral with extension h. The inside diameter of the lower end of elbow D is large enough to encircle the annular seating 0. Inside of said elbow and at the lower end thereof, and at right angles to the inside diameter thereof I have constructed an elongated recess H of such size that the projections it will looselyfit therein. Recess H is open at the top. In the walls at each end of recess II I have formed a perpendicular slot, open at the top, and of such size that the projection J can easily slide therein. The relation of the slots j, the projections J, and the valve flap and annular seating are such that the projections J within the slots 3' will guide the valve flap directly over the annular seating, without permitting projecwater is the only thing that supports the flap on its lower side and it has not even a hinge to retard its downward progress in closing. Lid F is fastened to the elbow D with cap screws with a soft gasket between the cover and its base for the purpose of making it fit air tight. Lid F has two depending lugs S on the inside thereof. When the lid is assembled with the elbow the end of lugs S cover the tops of slots 7', and hold the projection J within the limit of the slots.
At a point on cover F on the inside thereof I have constructed an adjustable stop P, consisting of a base m, having a cap screw therein, and means for locking such cap screw in the adjustment desired with the nut 0. The relation of the stop P to the valve flap E is such that when the water flows upward through the suction pipe and flap E is raised as high as the lugs f will permit, and forced back until it rests on stop P, it is held at such an angle that when the upward pressure is released, the valve flap will readily descend and rest on the annular seating 0. This stop P I have made adjustable for length as where the discharge is low the valve can be left more open than where it is high and the water hammer more severe. The longer the bumper the more the flap is exposed to the descending water and also being more horizontal makes it close more quickly.
It will be noted that by means of the slotted hinge consisting of slots j and projections J the flap valve will readily adjust itself to the valve seat, when there is no pressure on the flap from underneath as the axle has no bearing on its lower side. By the removal of cover F with projections S the flap can be lifted out without unscrewing nuts or bolts which have been submerged in the water, thus avoiding the difficult and sometimes impossible task of removing rusty nuts or bolts in. order to take out the valve Jflap. As the only opening to get to the valve and to remove or put it in place is through opening f in the elbow chance of leakage is reduced.
Having described my invention, I claim and desire Letters Patent upon 1. The combination of a suction pipe, a flange thereon, an annular valve seating on the top of such flange, a valve flap constructed to cooperate with the valve seating,
said valve flap having parallel extensions from the periphery thereof, cylindrical projections from said extensions on line with each other, on a common plane with the valve flap, and at right angles to a diameter of the valve flap which if extended would pass midway between said projections, a flanged elbow constructed to fit on the suction pipe flange and having an opening therein large enough to encircle said annular seating, means for clamping said flanges together to make an air tight fit, a recess within the interior wall of said elbow, near the bottom thereof, perpendicular slots within the wall on each end of said recess, said recess and slots being open at the top, and of such size that the parallel extensions can readily move vertically in said recess, and the cylindrical projections can have a free vertical movement in the slots, an opening in the elbow large enough to admit the valve flap, a cover for such opening, and lugs depending from the cover which when the cover is assembled with the elbow, will cover the upper ends of the slots, substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination of a suction pipe, a flangethereon, an annular valve seating on the top of such flange, a valve flap constructed to cooperate with the annular seating, extensions from the periphery of said valve flap parallel to each other, and parallel to an extension of a diameter of the valve flap which would pass midway between said extensions, said extensions terminating with cylindrical portions projecting at approximately right angles to the extensions on a plane with the valve flap and pointing in opposite directions, an elbow havin a flange at the lower end constructed to t on the suction pipe flange, and having an opening therein which will loosely encircle said an nular seating, said elbow having recess, vertical slots within the wall on each side of the recess, the recess and slots being open at the top, and of such size that the extensions and cylidrical portions can readily slide vertically therein when the valve is raised, and such cylindrical portions when assembled in the slots can act as a slotted hinge open at top, an opening through the wall of the elbow on the upper side thereof of sufiicient size to admit the valve, a cover for such opening, lugs depending from such cover adapted to close the upper end of the slots, and anadjustable stop constructed to stop the valve at an acute angle with the plane of the annular seating, all substantially as described.
