COMBINATION STEP-LADDER AND IRONING-BOARD.
Application filed September 22, 1915.
tain new and useful Improvements in. Combination Step-Ladders and Ironing-Boards, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved combination ironing board and step ladder and the principal object of the invention is to provide a device so constructed that it may be easily set up either as an ironing board or a step ladder and then quickly and easily converted from one to the other, the device being so constructed as to provide a strong and durable support whichever form may be used.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the device that the elements forming the support when used as an ironing board will form a brace when used as a step ladder.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the device that the elements which provide transverse props when in the form of a step ladder will provide supporting racks or arms when the device is used as an ironing board.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the device that the angle of the various elements may be regulated and thus the step ladder well supported and the ironing board held at the desired angle. I
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a view showing the device used as a step ladder and shown in side elevation, Fig. 2 is a view of the device used as a step ladder and shown in front elevation, Fig. 3 is a view showing the device used as an ironing board and shown in side elevation, and Fig. 4 is a view showing the device folded up and in longitudinal section.
The step ladder 10 is rotatably mounted upon the shaft 11 carried by the ironing board 12 and carries a latch strip 13 which is provided with notches 14: and 15 to engage the pin 16 carried by one of the side bars of the U-shaped brace or supporting member 17 which brace or supporting member is pivotally mounted by means of the 3 it will be readily seen that when the de- Specification of Letters Patent.

vice is used as a step ladder the brace 17 will serve as a yoke for preventing the ironing board from having a tendency to move away from the step ladder, the pin 16 fitting into the notch 1 1 and that when the device is used as an ironing board the member 17 Will then serve as a supporting prop or leg releasably held at a desired angle by having the pin 16 fitting into one of the notches 15 of the latch rod 13. It is desired that the step ladder be prevented from any tendency toward a transverse tilting movement and therefore there has been provided the bars 18 which serve as side props when the device is used as a ladder and serve as dry- 1ng bars or rack when the device is used as an ironing board.
In order to hold the ironing board at the desired angle with respect to the step ladder there has been provided the prop 19 which is hingedly connected with one of the steps of the step ladder and fits into one of the sockets when in the form of the ironing board. If desired the prop may be fitted into one of the sockets when the device is used as a step ladder and will then serve as additional means for preventing collapsing of the step ladder.
When this device is in use it may be set up as shown in Fig. 1 for use as a step ladder or it may be set up as shown in Fig. 3 for use as an ironing board. If the device is being used as an ironing board it can be easily converted into a step ladder by simply swinging the element 17 from the position shown in Fig. 4 to that shown in Fig. 1 after placing the device in an upright position and it can be as easily converted from a step ladder to an ironing board. When it is no longer desired to use the device the latch rod 13 will be disconnected from the pin 16 and swung down against the side of the ladder and the ironing board can then be swung into on gagement with the ladder as shown in Fig.
A and the bars or arms 18 swung inwardly out of the way. The device will therefore fold into a compact mass and will not take up room. If desired it may be leaned against the wall in an upright position or it may be placed flat upon the floor as shown in Fig. 4.
I have therefore provided a device which will be very useful and which is so constructed that it can be very easily and quickly set up or collapsed.
What is claimed is A device of the character described comprising a step ladder, an ironing board having one end portion pivotally connected with the upper end portion of said step ladder, arms pivotally connected with the upper end portion of said step ladder and adapted to swing from one side of the step ladder to the other, a cross bar connecting the free ends of said arms for engaging the outer face of said ironing board,
