To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Gnoncn A. Nnnnow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monessen, in the county of VVestmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hasps, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to fasteners for swinging or sliding doors, lids and the like and has special reference to'a hasp which is adapted to receive the shackle of a padlock. A further object of the invention is the provision of a hasp in which the padlock may be freely turned to any desired position for conveniently inserting or extracting the shackle of the padlock.

A further object of this invention is the provision of a fastener which consists of comparatively few parts and is simple in construction, but durable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which de-' vices of this character are ordinarily sub jected.

For a full description of the invention and the advantages and merits thereof, reference .is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, in which,

The door A is adapted to close in the usual manner against the casing or wall B, and the wall B has mounted thereon, one of the plates or leaves 1 of the hasp which is secured thereto by the fastening elements 2 which may consist of screws, bolts or any other fastening means.

The plate 1 is provided with a bifurcation at its large end and the ends formed by said bifurcation are turned upon themselves to form knuckles 3 for the reception of a pivot bolt 4 in a manner common to devices of this character.

Mounted upon the pivot bolt 4 in a manner similar to the mounting of the plate 1 is the plate 5 which is provided with an enlarged head 6, and extending from the head 6 is a tongue 7 which is adapted to be grasped by the fingers when the hasp is being placed in an inoperative position. The head 6 is provided with a circular opening 8 which receives a circular disk 9 adapted to freely revolve in the disk 8. Flanges 10 are Specification of Letters Patent.

provided on the disk 9 and are designed to overlap the head 6 around the edge of the circular opening 8. It will be understood, of course that in assembling this disk and head, one of the flanges is designed to be inserted through the opening 8 and afterward struck down to be permanently mounted upon the head 6 in a manner that is well known to the art. A longitudinal opening 11 is provided in the disk 9 for the purpose hereinafter described.

Extending transversely through the door is an aperture 12 and on each side of the door is provided a countersunk circular recess for the reception of washers 13. In order that the hasp may be secured to the door, I provide a staple member which consists in the stud 1% having threads formed upon one end for the reception of a nut 15 which threadedly engages with the threads of the member 14 and has a bearing upon one of the washers 13. Integrally formed with the opposite end of the stud 14 is a staple 16 which is provided with an opening for the reception of a shacklefor a padlock or other securing means.

When the device is mounted upon the door in the manner indicated and a padlock secured thereto by means of its shackle, it will be seen that the padlock may be turned or positioned at any desired angle without danger of the staple being twisted from its fastening. The padlock may be easily removed from the staple without danger of being cramped or fixed in an awkward position as is a common occurrence in the ordinary hasp.

From the foregoing it will be observed that a very simple and durable hasp has been provided, the details of which embody the preferred form. I desire it to be understood however, that slight changes or modifications in. the minor details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

I claim:

1. A hasp comprising a hinged plate, a staple adapted to be rotatably mounted on a door, and means rotatably mounted on said plate for receiving said staple.
