UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
.Tomos AQ- PnAsn, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN INDIA-RUBBER ,OVERSHOES Specification Iorming part of -Lette-rs Patent No. 11,947, dated November 14,1854.
To @ZZ whom it may concern: Be it known that I, JULIUs A.fPEAsE, of the city,.county, and State of New York, haveinvented anew and useful improvement in in dia-rubber and other overshoes, by which thev air is allowed to circulate Within the saine to ventilate the outside of the boot or sho'e'overv 'which they are worn; ,and I do hereby declare v,that the following is a full, clear, and- 4exact description of the same, reference bein g-had to t'xe annexed drawings, making part of this specication.
Figure l-is a perspective view oi' a shoe withthe improvement attached. Fig. 2is a trans-z -verse section of the same. Fig. 3 is a long? itudinal section of the same. Similar letters in the gnres'refer to corresponding parts.
'lhe nature of this invention and improvement'donsists' in forming'ontne in nersurface ,of the sides and top of overshoes,` or on those portions OftheIiDingof the same, tongues, ribs,
or other projections' in such'a manner. as :to form channels, indentations, o'r spaces between them for the free admission of air from labove` for the ventilation of the boots orshoe's `over jvvhich they are worn, and the escape eff'the noxious ho'at and otherimpurities surroundingthe same.
To enable othersskilled in the artjto make A and use my invention, I willl proceed to more -fully describe the construction and beneficial eiects of the same. v
The ribs 01; projections A on the inner sur- .face of the sides and top of the shoe may be either formed on the ndiarubber whenthe shoe is made b'y forming corresponding'depressions in the mold or ou the lining before beingplaced inside the same, and are arranged -at-such distances and relations to each other as to freely admit the air to the passages or 'channels B between them from the upper part ."When worn over the ordinary boot or shoe, and
'at the same time not to interfere withtheshoes usual facility of application to and detachment from the same. These ribs or projections maydoubtless be varied in th eir positions and forms to accomplish thesel objects but itis believed that by placing them in the position `greprel sented in Fig. 3 they will not onlybest 'perform their functions as a ven tilator to the foot,
but .also serve to retain them in the proper.
position they should at all times assume on' the same.
Instead of extending from the top to near the sole, so as to form upright communicating chan-nels at their lower ends for the air on the sides and t'ro'm near the middle ot' the shoe toward the toefof thesam'e to form correspond,y
ing inclined channels, as represented, they may be made of any desired length 'and form,
. and extended to produce any shapev of' channels or spaces for the passage 'or retention of air that the judgment or taste of the constructor may dictate. By constructing over- 'shoes in this manner, so as to form spaces for the circulation of air between them and the main body of the boots or shoes' over which they are..worntheperspiration.and impurities einitted'rom 4the feet of the wearer will be allowed fito* escape through said` 'channels' or -spaces,"and th constantpresence of pure'air v next the-inner boots or shoes wilhin a great measure, prevent an undue perspiration ofthe foot, which tends, when retained next the feet, as in the luse of the ordinary overshoes, to decomposethefleather and produce disease in the feet. These advantages will enable the overshoes to be worn within thehouse and at other -times whenit is inconvenient to remove them', as they do not produce an undue perspiration and can be removed without the liability of catching cold, as is the -case with the ordinary rubber overshoe.
Having thus fully described my invention-z what'I- claim as new, and desire to secure by.' LettersPatent, is
. Making`i`iidia-rubber or gum shoes with-the
