With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion of the interior of a sleeping car provided with safety hand holds connected in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a detail vertical sectional view illustrating the manner of mounting the hand hold. p I
In the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, 1 designates a safety hand hold consisting of a horizontal handle bar having downwardly bent terminal portions forming arms 2 which are provided with attach ing shanks 3 piercing the window sill 4 and supporting the horizontal handle rod above the window sill in spaced relation with the same in convenient position to be grasped by the occupant of a lower berth. The arms are provided with collars 5 and their terminals 6 may be threaded for the reception of nuts 7 but any other suitable means may of course be employed for securing the arms of the handle rod to the window sill or other convenient portion of the car. The horizontal handle rod extends longitudinally of the berth and each window is designed to be equipped with a safety hand hold. The hand hold has its horizontal grip portion or rod supported at a sufficient elevation to be within easy reach and the hand hold will be found convenient while the train is traveling over rough road beds and especially in mountainous sections where there is more or less swaying of the cars. the safety hand hold on the window sill, the grip portion may be located at the desired elevation and a sufficiently long hand hold to afford a grip of the desired length may be provided.
In case of accidents the hand holds will be found of great service and may be the means of preventing persons from being thrown out of their berth.
What is claimed is 1. The combination with a sleeping car, of a safety hand hold comprising a horizontal'handle bar extending along the side of the car over the window sill and provided with arms supporting the horizontal handle rod in an elevated position above the window sill and secured to the latter.
2. The combination with a sleeping car, of a safety hand hold comprising a horizontal rod located above the window sill and being of a length substantially equal to the width of the window'and provided with terminal supporting arms piercing the window sill and provided at the upper face of the same with collars and having lower fastening means, said horizontal rod being in convenient position to be grasped by a person lying within the berth.
3. The combination with a car of a safety By mounting hand hold comprising a horizontal rod 10- cated above the window sill and being of a length to extend substantially across the window, an arm supporting the horizontal rod in spaced relation with the window sill and provided with means for engaging the said window sill.
