It will thus be seen that the re tary cutters are driven two revolutions for each revolution of the first transfer cylinder 15 and the collecting cylinder is driven one and one-third revolutions for each revo-' 'cylinder 22. This is necessary to prevent the pushers 18 from marking the sheet next to the cylinder 15 after the group of sheets has been transferred to the cylinder 22. The

In operation: The web as it comer the prespasses downwardly bet cutters 8, 4, where it is cut trans into sheets. The collecting cylinder 9 collects three sheets and transfers them together with the fourth sheet everyone and one-third revolutions of the collecting cylinder 9 to the grippers 17 of the first transfer cylinder 15. The group of sheets is then transferred from the grippers 17 on the cylinder 15 to the grippers 24 on the cylinder 22 which transference will cause the abrupt retardation of the sheets. As the sheets are at the under side of the cylinder 15. when they are transferred to the cylinder 22, the sheets will fall away from the surface of the cylinder onto the guide 21 and will not be disturbed by the more rapidly moving cylinder 15 after the control of the group of sheets has been assumed by the cylinder 22. The grippers 24 will, in turn, transfer the sheets to either the grippers 27 or 28 of the folding-cylinder 25 at the surface speed of the said folding cylinder. The group of sheets will then be folded off to the cylinder 32 and transferred therefrom to the delivery cylinder 37 where the folded group of sheets may be slit lengthwise of its travel into a plurality of sections and then delivered to the delivery device 41. i
By the term cylinder as used in the description, I contemplate any suitable means for passing the sheets and signatures through the prescribed path and by the term grippers I wish to include any engaging devices suitable for the purpose of leading the sheets or signatures through said prescri'bed path.
It is evidentthat various changes may be resorted to in the construction, form and arrangement of the various parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; and hence I do not wish to limit myself strictly to the form herein shown and described, but
What I claim is 1. In a machine of the character described, means for cutting sheets from a traveling web, sheet folding mechanism traveling at a lesser speed than the web and means for feeding the sheets to the folding mechanism at the speed thereof.
2. In a machine of the character described, means for cuttin sheets from a traveling web, sheet folr ing mechanism traveling at a lesser speed than the web and means for retarding the sheets and feeding them to the folding mechanism at the speed thereof.

7. In a machine of the character described, a sheet carrying mechanism traveling at a certain speed, a sheet foldin mechanism traveling at a lesser speed an an interposed sheet transfer mechanism traveling at the speed of the folding mechamsm.
8. In a machine of the character described, a sheet collecting mechanism traveling at a certain speed, a sheet folding mechanism traveling at a'lesser speed an an interposed sheet transfer mechanism traveling at the speed of the folding mechamsm.
9. In a machine of the character described, a sheet, carr ing mechanism traveling at a certain spee a sheet folding mechanism traveling at a lesser speed and a sheet transfer mechanism arranged to retard the sheets as they pass from the carrying mechanism to the folding mechanism.
10. In a machine of the character described, a sheet carrying mechanism traveling at a certain speed, a sheet folding mechanism traveling at a lesser speed and a sheet transfer mechanism arranged to abruptly retard the sheets as they pass from the carrying mechanism to the folding mechanism.
11. In a machine of the character described, a sheet collecting mechanism traveling at a certain speed, a sheet folding mechanism traveling at a lesser speed and a sheet transfer mechanism arranged to retard the sheets as they pass from the collecting mechanism to the folding mechanism.
12. In a machine of the character described, a sheet collecting mechanism traveling at a certain speed, a sheet folding mechanism traveling at a lesser speed and a sheet transfer mechanism arranged to abruptly refrom the sheet carrying cylinder and trans-' fer the sheets to the folding cylinder.
14. In a machine of the character described, a sheet collecting cylinder traveling at a certain surface speed, a first sheet transfer cylinder traveling at the same surface speed, a sheet folding cylinder traveling at a lesser surface speed and a second sheet transfer cylinder traveling at the surface speed of the folding cylinder and operable to take the sheets from the first transfer cylinder and to transfer the sheets to the folding cylinder.
15. In a machine of the character described, means for cutting sheets from a traveling web, mechanism for collecting sheets cut therefrom, sheet folding mechanism traveling at a lesser speed and sheet transfer mechanism arranged to abruptl retard the sheets as they pass from the co lecting mechanism to the folding mechamsm.
16. In a machine of the character described, means for cutting sheets from a traveling web, asheet carrying cylinder traveling at a certain surface speed, a sheet folding cylinder traveling at about one-half the surface speed of the sheet carrying cylinder and a s eet transfer cylinder traveling at the surface speed of the folding cylinder for transferring the sheets from the carrying cylinder to the folding cylinder.
17. In a machine of the character described, means for cutting sheets from a traveling web, a sheet collecting cylinder traveling at a certain surface speed, a first sheet transfer cylinder traveling at the same surface speed, a sheet folding cylinder traveling at about one-half the surface speed of the collecting and first transfer cylinders, and a second sheet transfer cylinder traveling at the surface speed of the folding cylinder and arranged to transfer the sheets from the first transfer cylinder to the said folding cylinder.
