CIGAREUE BOX. APPLICATION FILED MAY 26, 1916.

CIGARETTE-BOX.
Application filed May as, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROTHCHILD F. THORN- nrnn, of Chelsea, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigarette-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cigarette boxes and particularly of the type which com prises two members hingedly connected. With boxes of this character as usually now employed, the cigarettes are usually laid loosely in the bottom member of the box and must be picked therefrom after the top or cover is raised. Then when the cover is closed there is frequently liability of damage to the cigarettes by tearing or mutilating them as the sides of the cover close onto the bottom member.
The object of my invention is to provide an i'mproi ed attachment for boxes of this character which, when the cover is raised, will automatically elevate the cigarettes from the bottom member of the box and present them in a position for easy access.
My invention consists in the attachment, and in the box having a pocket attachment, substantially as hereinafter described and claimed.
Of the accompanying drawings Figure l is a perspective view of a cigarette box embodying my improvements. said box being open to give access to the cigarettes. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a similar sectional view but with the box closed. F ig. 1 is a plan view of the blank from which my improved pocket attachment is economically made. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the pocket attachment, made from a blank such as illustrated in Fig. at, folded and ready to be attached to the box members as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Similar reference characters indicate similar parts in all of the views.
A box of well-known form and construction comprises a bottom member 12 and a cover or top member 13 hinged to the bottom member at let, the hinge usually consisting of the label which is employed to extend partly or wholly around the box. The box illustrated in the drawings is proportioned to hold cigarettes in two layers, but my inven tion is not limited thereto, as the box may be differently proportioned to hold the cigarettes in a single layer.
My improved attachment, as illustrated Specification of Letters Patent.

in the drawings, comprises a blank cut in the form indicated in Fig. 1, and creased or scored as indicated in that figure. The different portions or sections illustrated in Fig. 4 comprise the rectangular portions 15 and 16 which are connected by a narrower por-- tion 17, flaps 18 and 19 being adapted to be overlapped andadhesively connected. Extending downwardly from the portion 15 is a flap which is creased to present portions 20 and 21. The portions 16 of the blank is of greater length than the portion 15 and is provided with a flap 22. hen the blank shown in Fig. 4: is folded to the condition illustrated in Fig. 5, the flaps 18 and 19 being adhesively connected, the portion 20 is folded in so as to form the bottom of a pocket, the walls of which consist of the portions 15, 16, 17 and 19. This pocket is very readily secured in proper position relatively to the bottom and cover members of the box by simply applying a suitable adhesive to the rear face of the portion 21, and the rear face of the portion 22, pressing the portion 21 against the inner face of the rear wall of the bottom member 12 of the box, and pressing the flap 22 against the inside of the cover of the box close to that portion of the cover which is uppermost when the cover is raised as shown in Fig. 2. The pocket may be filled with the cigarettes either before or after it is located and secured as just described.
hen the box is closed the pocket and the contents thereof assume the position shown in Fig. 3 but when the cover is raised, the pocket is automatically projected somewhat forward from the cover 13, this being due to the fact that the hinge 23 formed by the crease between the portions 20 and 21, is above the hinge 14 of the cover. As the cover is raised, said coverand the pocket turn on different centers presented by the hinges 1d, 23, but since the portion 22 is ad: hesively connected to the inside of the cover, that portion of the pocket attachment cannot yield and the rear wall of the pocket becomes automatically somewhat bowed. It is this yielding connection of the pocket which causes the latter to project the articles forward as the cover is raised. That is the yielding connection is somewhat resilient, because the upper extended portion of the rear member 16 of the pocket is capable of springing or curving somewhat as indicated in Fig. 2.
It will readily be understood that the ati V v p 1,192,707
tachment be diflerently formed to fit other shapes or proportions of boxes. In fact my invention contemplates the separate manufacture and sale of attachmentssuch as shown in Fig. 5,, either shaped and proportioned just as shown in that figure or differently proportioned to fit other proportions of boxes.
The pocket thoroughly protects the cigarettes, as the inner wall of the pocket provides a smooth surface, and during the opening or closing of the box nothing can contact with the cigarettes to injure them in any way. And yet'a simple raising of the cover or top member lifts all of the cigarettes a to accessible position.
Having now described my invention, what I claim is: 1
1. A box of the character described comprising a bottom member, a cover hinged thereto, and a pocket having front, rear, side and bottom portions, the'bottom portion having a flap adhesively secured to the rear wall of the bottom member of the box, and
the rear portion of the pocket having an up wardly' extended flap adhesively secured to the inside of the cover of the box.
2. A pocket attachment for boxes of the" i character described, comprising a blank folded to present front, rear, side and bot tom portions, the bottom'portion havinga flap adapted tobe adhesively secured to the rear wall of the bottom member of a box and the rear portion having an upwardly extended flap adapted to be adhesively secured to the inside of the cover of the box.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
