To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAMVE. PENN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lakemills, in the county of Jefferson and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cheese- Presses, of which the following is a specification.
The object of thisinvention is to produce a cheese press of improved construction in which the weight of the body of the press and the cheese supported thereon is utilized to exert a continuous pressure upon the cheese.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation with parts broken away illustrating a cheese press embodying the features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is an end elevation looking toward the right-hand end of Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 4: is a transverse sectional view taken inthe plane of line 1-4 of Fig. 1 and lookingin the direction of the arrows. Fig. 5 is an enlarged vertical sectional view with parts broken away, taken substantially in the plane of line 55 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a fragmental side elevation with parts broken away to illustrate the connection be tween the body and the front end frame, and the means for moving the front presser head. Fig. 7 is a side elevation of the front end of the body. Fig. 8 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line 8-8 of Fig. 6.
The exemplary form of press illustrated in the drawings is provided with two troughs of different sizes adapted to receive different sizes of cheese, each trough being provided with individual pressingmeans. It should be understood, however, that a machine embodying my invention may have only a single trough and pressing means, or
any desired number as preferred.
The body 11 of the press which contains the two troughs 12 and 13, is supported at one end by an end frame 1 1 which is rigidly fixed to the body. Preferably the lower ends of the legs of said end frame are rounded so as to rock upon the floor in accommodating the up and down movements of the body. The opposite or forwardend of the body 11 is movably supported upon a frame 15 which stands on the floor in an upright position, the body 11 being arranged to move up and down with relation to this frame. The forward end of the body 11 has a cross-piece 16 rigid therewith. (See Fig. 3). A vertically disposed rack bar I? having teeth 18 on opposite sides thereof extends through an opening in the top piece of the end frame 15 and through a bracket 19 fixed on the upper side of said top piece, the lower end of said rack bar being pivoted between a pair of ears 20 fixed on the cross-piece 16. A hand lever 21 is pivoted in the upper end of a link 22 which has its lower end pivoted in the bracket 19, and the short end of said hand lever is arranged to engage the teeth on one side of the rack bar 17 for raising said rack bar and the body 11 supported thereby. A holding dog 23 pivoted in the bracket 19 is arranged to engage the teeth on the opposite side of the rack bar for holding the rack bar and the body 11 in their elevated posi tion.
The construction of the body and the troughs l2 and 13 is most clearly illustrated in Figs. t and 5 which show side walls 25, a middle wall 26, rails 27 and 28 and bottom walls 29 and 30 suitably secured to gether in spaced relation by means of a plurality of transverse braces 31. The upper inner corners of the rails 27 and 28 are preferably beveled, andthecheesees are supported on said corners. The liquid expressed from the cheese While under compression flows along the bottom boards 29 and 30 and is drained into any suitable receptacle. The walls 25 and 26 have slots 32 therein above the rails 27 and 28, which slots form guideways for two independent slides which support the adjustable presser heads. The slide 33 for the larger trough 12 has a pair of projections 34 lyingin the slots 32, and another pair of projections 35 overlying the upper edgesof the walls 25 and 26. The slide is arranged to be manually adjusted longitudinally of the trough and secured in the desired position by means of pins 36 passing through openings in the projections 35 and into openings 37 in the upper edges of the walls 25 and 26. The slide has a guideway 38 inwhich a rack bar.39 is adjustably mounted. Fixed to the forward end of the rack bar 39 is a presser head 40 having oppositely extending projections engaging in the guide-slots 32. Ears 41 on the slide 33 provide bearings for a rock shaft 42 having fixed thereto a hand-lever 4:3;and a depending arm it, To the lower end of the arm 44 is pivoted a dog 45 engaging with the teeth in the upper face of the rack bar 39. The slide 33 also has a pair of ears 46 between which is pivoted a holding dog 47 engaging the rack bar. This holding dog has an upwardly extending lug 48 fixed thereon in position to be engaged by the dog 45' so that both of the dogs may be moved out of engagement with the rack bar when the hand-lever 43 is swung forwardly a suflicient distance' It will be evident from Fig. 1 that when the dog 45 is moved into engagement with the lug 48 the dog 47 will be swung up away from the rack bar and will also lift the dog 45 away from the bar. The presser head 40 and the rack bar 39 may then be slid rearwardly in the slide 33. By oscillating the hand lever 43 the presser head 40 and the rack bar 39 may be advanced forwardly.
The slide 50 for the smaller" trough 13 is substantially similar to the larger slide just described, and comprises projections 51 engaging guideways in the walls 25 and 26, the slide being adapted to be secured in adjusted position in the trough by means of pins52 passing through openings in the upper projections on the slide and entering openings 53 in the walls. The head 54 has opposite projections engaging in the guide slots 32 and the rack bar 55 is adapted to be adjusted by means of a hand lever 56, and dogs 57 as described for the larger pressure means.
At the forward end of the body 11 is positioned a head 60 which extends transversely across both of the troughs 12 and 13 and forms the abutment for the forward end of the cheese in the two troughs. .At each end of said head 60 is a pair of trunnions 61 and 62 which project outwardly through the side walls 25 of the trough and have rollers 63 thereon arranged to travel in slotted guides 64 fixed in the side walls. The trunnions prevent the head from rocking. The rear pair of trunnions 62 are also adapted to travel in cam slots 65 in a pair of brackets 66 which are fixed to the inner sides of side-pieces or legs of the end frame 15. In addition to the cam slots 65 each of the brackets 66 has a pair of slots 67 therein, which slots are adapted to receive a pair of roller, studs 68 on one of two plates 69 carried by opposite sides of the body 11. In the construction herein shown, these plates 69 have flanges at three of their edges to overlie the edges of the side walls 25. The studs 68 are fixed to the upper and lower rear corners of the plates. The slots 67 are disosed in arcs struck from a center represented by the bearing point of the lower ends of the legs of the rear end frame 14. Thus the slots are disposed in the natural line of movement of the'studs 68 so that the'studs travelin the slots during the up and down movement of the body 11' without causing tipping or other movement of the end frame and 50 having been adjusted along the troughs if necessary to accommodate the cheeses, and said slides being fixed in their adjusted position by means of the pins 36, 52. The hand levers 43 and 56 are thenoperated to advance the racks 39, 56, and presser heads 40, 54, into engagement with the cheese to press the latter against the front presser head 60. The hand lever 21 is now operated to raisethe vertical rack bar 17 a sufficient distance to permit the holding dog 23 to be disengaged therefrom, so as to release the rack bar and the body 11 to the action of gravity. In its descent the body tilts about a center represented; by the lower ends of the rear legs 14, and therefore the body has a slight longitudinal movement with relation to the end frame 15, the extent of which movement is indicated by the degree of inclination of the slots 67. The end frame 15, however, remains stationary and upright at all times since the slots 67 are struck on the arc of movement of the body. The relative movement be tween the end frame 15and the body longidescent of its trunnions 62 in the rearwardly and downwardly inclined slots 65. As the cheese shrinks under compression between the opposing heads the body gradually sinks to take up the space and maintain the cheese under constant pressure: When the lower ends of the slots 65, 67, are reached, the body may be again raised by means of the hand lever 21 and rack 17 and held in this position by the holding dog 23 while the adjustable presser heads 40, 54, are advanced by means of the hand levers 43, 56, to take up the space caused by the shrinkage of the cheese during the first compression. The dog 23 is then disengaged from the rack 17, and the body 11 again permitted to descend to further compress the cheese.

A cheese press having, in combination, an end frame having guide slots thereon, a body movable up and down with relation to said end frame and having projections engaging in said guide slots, the latter being disposed in the natural line of movement of the projections,a presser head mounted on said body, and cooperating means on said presser head and said end frame for forcing the presser head to move longitudinally in the body during the descent of the latter.

A cheese press having, in combination, an end frame, a body movable up and down with relation to said frame, said frame having guide slots at opposite sides thereof, projections carried by said body and moving in said guide slots, the latter being disposed in the natural line of movement of said projections, said end frame further having cam slots at opposite sides thereof,
and a presser head mounted in said body and having trunnions engaging in said cam slots.
5. A cheese press having, in combination, a support, a body movable up and down with relation to said support, a presser-head 011 said body, and cooperating cam means on said presser head and said support acting to move the presser-head longitudinally of the body.
6. A cheese press having, in combination, a support, a body having an up-and-down movement and also a longitudinal movement with relation to said support, a presserhead connected to said support, and a pinand-slot connection between said body and said support arranged to move said presserhead longitudinally of the body in a down ward movement of the latter.
7. A cheese press having, in combination, an end-frame, a body movable up and down with relation to said frame, a presser-head carried by said body, a cam connection between said presser-head and said end-frame acting to move the former longitudinally of the body and tending to move the end-frame in the opposite direction, and means for preventing such movement of the end-frame.
8. A cheese press having, in combination,

A cheese press having, in combination, a trough having guideways in opposite sides thereof, a presser-head having trunnions projecting through said guideways, an endframe having at each side a downwardly and rearwardly sloping slot to receive one of said trunnions, said end-frames also having at each side two downwardly and forwardly sloping guide slots, one guide slot being below the other, and rollers projecting from opposite sides of said trough and traveling in said guide slots.
10. A cheese press having, in combination, an end frame, a body movable up and down with relation to said frame, said body having a guide slot in each side, a presser head having at each end a pair of projections lying in one of said slots, said end frame having at each side a cam slot into which one projection of said pair of projections extends.
11. A cheese press having, in combination, an end-frame, a trough having slots in opposite side walls, a presser-head having trunnions slidable in said slots, a pair of brackets fixed to opposite sides of said end-frame and having cam slots to receive said trunnions, said brackets also having guide-slots therein and studs projecting from opposite sides 0 said trough and adapted to travel in said guide-slots.
12. A cheese press having, in combination, a trough having at one end a supportingframe rigid therewith, an end-frame at the opposite end of the trough, a pair of brackets fixed to opposite sides of the last mentioned end-frame, said brackets having guide-slots therein disposed on the arcs of circles struck from a center represented by the bearing point of the opposite end-frame, a pair of end-plates fixed to opposite sides of said trough, studs carried by said endplates and traveling in said guide-slots, said brackets having cam-slots therein,v and the trough having registering guideways, and a presser-head in said trough having trunnions projecting through said guideways and into said cam slots.

A cheese press having, in combination, a trough having guideways in opposite sides thereof, a presser-head having trunnions projecting through said guideways, an endframe, a pair of brackets secured to opposite sides of said end-frame and having downwardly and rearwardly sloping cam slots to receive said trunnions, said brackets also having downwardly and forwardly sloping guide-slots, and studs projecting from opposite sides of said trough and traveling in said guide slots.

A cheese press having, in combination, a support, a body arranged to have an upand-down movement and also a longitudinal movement with relation to said support, a presser-head, a pin-and-slot connection between said presser-head and said support arranged to move the presser-head longitudinally of the body in the descent of the latter, and a pin-and-slot connection between the body and said support to resist the pressure of the presser head against the sup port. 4 r

A cheese press having, in combination, a support, a body arranged to have an upand-down movement and also a longitudinal movement with relation to said support, a presser-head, a pin-and-slot connection between the presser-head and said support, and a pin-and-slot connection between the body and said support, the slots of said two connections diverging.
16. A cheese press having, in combination, a support, a body movable up-anddown with relation thereto, a presser-head, and pin-and-slot connection between said Presser-head and said support arranged to move the resser-head longitudinally of the body during descent of the latter.
17. A cheese press having, in combination, a support, a body movable up and down with relation thereto, a presser-head, and cam means operated by the relative movement between said body and said support for causing movement of the presser-head 1ongitudinally of the body.
18-. A cheese press having, in combination, a support, a rack bar guided by said support, a presser-head attached to the rack bar, a hand lever pivoted to said support, an arm fixed to said hand lever, afeeding dog carried by said arm and arranged to engage the rack bar, and a holding dog carried by the support and arranged to engage the rack bar, said holding dog having a lug arranged to be engaged by said feeding dog for tilting the holding dog away from'the rack bar, said holding dog when so raised serving to hold the feeding dog away from the rack.
