Be it known that l, ANonnvv lf. PETERSON'. a citizen of the United States. residing at Dwight. in theI county of Livingston and State of lllinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in DrillingMachinos7 of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to drilling machines and has particular reference to an improved construction of machine for drilling post holes. i
The primary object ot' the invention is to provide a drilling machine of this character which will be light in construction so that the same may be readily transporttul from one position to another and which` may be operated to drill a series of holes ot' unit'orm diameter and depth.
Another object ot' the invention is to provide means whereby holes ot" a prer'letermined depth may be drilled.
A further object of the invention is to provide means to Cause the drill to clean out the hole it forms without removing the same from the hole.
'ith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features ot' construction, combination and arrangement ot' parts, as will be hereinafter more lully described, illustrated in the ac, companying drawings, and claiuied.

Al designates a suit-- able support tor the drill which may be ot any desired character7 such as a Wheeled body or the like, for slniporting the frame. of the drill yin spaced relation from the grround.

A\rranged Within these bearings 5 are shafts 7 and 8. the shaft 7 being provided upon its upper end with a sprocket 9 which is connected with a sprocket 10 upon the upper end of the shaft 8 by means of a chain 11. This shaft 7 near its lower end is passed through a second bearing 12 and has mounted thereon a beveled gear 13 which meshes with a second beveled gear' 14 upon the inner end ot a power shaft 15 which is supported in a bearing 16 secured to any suitable portion of the frame. The outer end of the shaft 15 is provided with a pulley 17 about which a belt may be arranged from airvv suitable source ol' power to rotate the shaft 1.3. beveled gears lat. and 13, shaft 7, and through the n.edium of the sprockets and chain. thus rotate the shaft 8. If desired. a suitable crank mechanism (not shown) may be applied to the shaft 15 in order to prov-idr` for the manual operation of the drill.

The outer end ot this pin 2.3 passes through an opening in a guide bracket 2i' and is connected with a lever 2S by means of a rod 29, the lever 2S being mounted upon a segment 30 .ecured to any suitable portion of the frame and having a dog for engagement with teeth upon the segment to lock the pin 25 in any adjusted position relative to the rod In operation the machine is placed in a position with the drill 24 over the point where a hole is desired to be drilled. Power is then applied to the pulley 17, which through the beveled gears and sprockets, is transmitted to the shaft 8, which in turn by reason of its peculiar engagement with the rod 22 rotates the rod and drill 24. Before the drill 24 is initially started to citt into the ground, the lever 28 is swung to draw the pin 25 from engagement with the rod 2Q so that the combined weight of the li-ill n chuck and rod 22 will function to cause theI drill to bite into the ground and begin cutting thereinto. After the drill has cut into the ground a desired distance. the lcver QS. is released and the pin 25 under the action of a springtr 3l will ride into engagement with one of the grooves 2U in the rod 2;). This will prevent further downward movement of the drill. and consequently its cutting operation will be stopped so that as it still rotates it will operate to clean out the earth from the hole it has cut..
By the provision of a, plurality of grooves QU in the rod it will be noted that after the drill 24 has commenced its cutting' operation, the lever ih may be released to permit of the pin 25 engragrint,r with they rod 2:5 so that as the said rod moves downwardly and one of the grooves 2G becomes alined with the pin 25, the said pin will springlr thcreinto and prevent further downward movement of the drill. It will thu.'` be seen that series of holes of uniform depth may be drilled, the spacing of the grooves upon the rod Q2 providingA means whereby holes of various uniform depths may be drilled. as will be understood.
