MANHOLE FRAME AND COVER.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY JoNns, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Suflern, in the county of Rockland and State of New York, have made and invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manhole Frames and Covers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to manhole frames and covers, the object being to provide a construction embodying top and supplemental covers, which when in their seated position, prevent the egress of a liquid therethrough. v
A further object isto provide a manhole frame with top and supplemental covers, so arranged that a liquid-tight construction is provided andv of such design that the top cover may be removed without affecting the liquid-tight juncture between the supplemental cover and a manhole frame.
Other objects and advantages will appear as the description proceeds, wherein it is to be understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The preferred embodiment of my invention is disclosed in theaccompanying:draw-- ings, wherein V Figure 1 is a view in side section of a manhole characteristic features of my invention; Fig. 2 is a similar view with the covers removed and with the view point shifted through 90? Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the several views, wherein corresponding parts are indicated by similar numerals, a manhole frame 4, is provided at its upper extremity with the inwardly projecting ledge 5 defining a continuous recess 6 into which the top cover 7 is adapted to seat.
The side walls of the frame are provided with the continuous and inwardly protrud- .ing flange 8, the innermost extremity of which is projected upwardly to form the upstanding lip 9. A supplemental cover 10 is adapted to rest down upon the said lip 9 and is formed with the spaced flanges 11, between which is located a gasket 12. The supplemental cover is ,thus adapted to rest upon the flange 8 with the gasket 12 in contact with the upstanding lip 9 whereby a frame and covers embodying the The manhole frame 4 is provided with the spaced lugs' 13, which are mounted below the flange 8, and arranged in superposed pairs so as to receive the extremities of the cross bar 14 therein, whereby the same may act in the capacity of a strut upon which a pressure may be exerted tending to draw the top and supplemental covers into their seated positions. The top cover ,7 is provided with the stepped opening 15 for'the reception of a pocket miember 16. The pocket member 16 is formed with the opening 17 in the bottom wall, through which extends a bolt 18. The lower extremity of the bolt 18 is threaded as at 19, so as to engage thethreaded opening 20 formed in the cross 'bar 14, so that, while the bolt may be ensupplemental cover 10, so as to resiliently hold the same in its seated and liquid-tight position. The bolt head 21is positioned intermediate the ends of the shank 7, and the portion of the bolt 23 which extends there-' above is threaded and adapted tobe engaged by the securing nut 24. The portion 23 of the bolt shank extends through .the opening 17 in the pocket member, wher eby the securing nut 24 is adapted to press down upon the pocket member and thus drawthe top cover.7 into its seated position and firmly hold the same, so located. r I

disclosed in Fig. 1, with' the extremities thereof resting-between the lugs 13. The supplemental cover is then placed upon and supported by the flange 8, and is drawn to its seated position by placing the .bolt
18 through the compression spring 22 and forcibly rotating the bolt head 21, whereby the lower extremity of the compression spring will bear down uponthe supplemental cover 8 and hold the same firmly in its seated and liquid-tight position. The top cover is then placed within the recess 6 and the securing nut 24vpositioned upon the upper extremity of the-bolt and tightened,

Having thus fully described my invention,
1. A construction of the class described,
comprisinga manholeframe, top and supplemental covers therefor, said cov'ersopening in an upward direction, and means engaging the said frame below the supplemental cover and independently engaging saidtop and supplemental covers and adapted to exert independently adjustable downward and seating forces upon the said;
covers.
2. A construction of the class described comprising a manhole frame, upwardly opening top and supplemental covers therefor, a detachable cross-bar engaging the frame below the said supplemental cover, a
bolt member adjustably engaging said crossbar and provided with a head above said supplemental cover, a resilient member interposed between said supplemental cover and head, adaptedto exert a downward force upon the former, and means engaging the upper extremity of said bolt/member and the top cov er' adapted to exert a down- 'wardflforce'thereon.
3. A construction of the class described comprising a manhole frame, upwardly open ng top and supplemental covers there-. 7 for, a detachable cross-bar engaging the said frame, a bolt member adjustably engaging said detachable-crossbar, means associated- '55 -w ith said bolt member adapted to exert an 1 independently adjustable downward force upon said supplemental cover, and means engaging said-bolt member adapted to exert j mamas an independently adjustable downward force upon said top cover. 1

An apparatus of the class described comprising a manhole frame, top and supplemental covers therefor, a member car-- ried by" said frame, abolt threadedly enga g said member and provided with a head thereon, a resilientmember interposed between said head and said supplemental cover, adapted to exerta downwardly seat ing-force upon the latter, and means engaging the'upper extremity of said bolt and said top cover adapted to exert a downwardly seating force thereon.
5. An apparatus of he class described,
comprising a manhole frame provided with an upper ledge adapted to receive a top cover thereon, a top cover adapted to seat upon said ledge, an inwardly protruding .flange carried by said frame, a supplemental cover adapted to seat thereon and effect a liquid-tight juncture therewith, a cross bar detachably engaging said frame below said inwardly protruding flange, and a bolt provided with threaded extremities and a head thereintermediate, the lower extremity of said bolt threadedly engaging said cross bar, resilient means interposed betweenthe supplemental cover and bolt head adapted 'to exert a seating force upon said supplemental cover, and means carried by said top cover receiving the upper extremity of said bolt therein, and a securing nut engaging the protruding upper extremity of said bolt adapted to exert a downwardly seating force upon said top cover. a
