To all whom t may concern:
Be it lknown that I, DoMINIoK A. REAGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Altoona, in the county of Blair and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fire-Boxes for Locomotive or Stationary Boilers, of which the following is aspecification.
This invention relates to fire-boxes adapted for use with either locomotive or stationary boilers, and its primary object is, to provide a fire-box with novelV and ef? fective means for promoting combustion, so that the maximum heat fromV the fuel may be obtained.
A further object of the invention is to increase the area or fire surface of thevflrebox, and thus materially add to its heating capacity.
A further object is to employ a supple'- mental hollow grate which serves as a water circulator; furnishes a more even expansion; increases the water space; assists in preventing the formation of scale in the boiler, and also prevents the tubes from direct contact with cold air. v
Cther objects of the improvement will be disclosed as the description proceeds.
The construction of the invention will be fully described hereinafter, in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification, and its features of novelty will be set forth in the appended claim.
In the drawing- Figure l is a central longitudinal vertical section of the fire-box of a locomotive boiler equipped with myv improvement, and Fig. 2 is an elevation of the water circulator detached.
The reference numeral l designates a locomotive fire-box provided with the usual ire door 2, and air inlets 3.
The grate bars 4 are the ordinary gratebars, and extending upward from the firebox floor in front of the bars 4 is a forwardly and upwardly inclined water circulator 5 extending to a point slightly above the boiler tube 9. As shown in Fig. 2 this device 5 consists of hollow horizontal bars 6 connected to and communicating with hollow parallel side bars 7, the ends of which are screw-threaded to facilitate the attachment of the device to the boiler both at its upper and lower ends, in order that a free circulation of water may pass therethrough.
The space 8 between the circulator 5 and the adjacent ends of the boiler tubes 9 constitutes a space, and it is provided with a clean out door l0, through which ashes may be removed that gain access to said space.
The coal not only. rests upon the usual grate bars 4, but piles up against the hollow frame or circulating device 5 which constitutes a forward and upward continuation of the grate 4l, and materially increases the fire surface as is obvious from the illustration in Fig. 1.
It will be readily perceived thatv the primary products of combustion are caused to pass through the highly heated incandescent bed of fuel piled against the upper portion of the water circulator 5, whereby said productsv are superheated and practically consumed, hence a more perfect combustion takes place, the sparks and coal dust being arrested and consumed in the meshes of the said fuel bed, thereby preventing the throwing out of sparks as well as the accumulation of foreign matter-in the boiler tubes, and said Vbeol of fuel also prevents the tubes from direct contact with cold air.
The water circulating device also prevents the exhaust pulling unconsumed particles of fuel into the tubes causing the latter to fill up or clog.

Vhile the improvement might be embodied in a variety of constructions, all accomplishing the purposes aimed at, the form here shown clearly shows the invention but I would have it understood'that I reserve the right to make all such variations in details as may fall within the terms and scope of the following claim.
