ALEXIUS M. LOUGHRAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
APPARATUS FOR MOLDING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July JUL, 1916.
Application filed September 8, 1915. Serial No. 43,534.
To all whom it may-concern:
Be it known that I, ALExiUs M. Loucrr RAN, of New York, in the county of New York, and in the State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Molding, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates particularly to a molding apparatus especially designed for produclng metal castings, particularly iron castings but which is adapted for use in connection with the making of all kinds of castings.
The object of my invention is to provide an apparatus of this character which is adapted to make use of the weight of the prepared molds as'asource of power for the movement of the molds from one point to another in the system; which is arranged in a manner so as to occupy a minimum amount of floor space; which, is arranged in such manner as to require utilization of a very small number of molds, and trucks for that the mold is automatically dismantled in the operation of the apparatus and the cast objects remo ed with a minimum amount of labor; and which is arranged with an apparatus to remove the sand from the molds in an advantageous manner after the. casting therein has been completed.
Other objects of my invention will appear from the detailed description of the same appearing hereinafter.
While my invention is capable of embodiment in many ditferentforms, for the purpose of illustration 1 have shown only one form thereof, in wh1ch- Figures 1 and 1 show a diagrammatic view of an apparatus made in accordance with my invention.
In the drawings T have shown a cupola 1 designed for supplying molten metal to a number of molds 2, located on trucks 3, whi'ch'are arranged to pass downwardly by gravity on an inclined track 4,-pass1ng 1n front of the cupola 1. The trucks are fed to the inclined track 4: by meansof an elevator 5, so constructed as to store up the power due to this downward movement, so as to be 'utilized in.amanner to be hereinafter de scribed. Preferably, the power is stored up by a storage of compressed airdue to the downward movement of the trucks 3, carrying the molds 2. The molds 2, carried by the trucks 3, are prepared while located on a storage track 6,-leading to the upper end of the elevator 5, near which track there is situated' a molding machine 7 of any desired type, but which is preferably constructed in the same manner as the molding machine .described in 'my 'co-pending application, Serial No. 29,734, filed May 22, 1915, and which may, if desired, be arranged to mold sash weights. The molds 2, located on the trucks 3, after being provided with the molten metal from the cupola 1, pass downwardly by gravity along the track 4, until stubshafts 8 located on the upper halves of the molds 2 automatically come into engage ment with hooks 9 on a rod 10 depending from a truck 11 adapted to run upon a horizont-al track 12 located over the track 4. The track 12 is preferably merely an I'beam. Owing to the fact that track 12 is horizon tal, while the track 4 is. inclined, the downward movement of the truck 3 along the lat ter track 4 will cause the upper half of the mold 2 to be gradually lifted off from the remainder of the mold, thus exposing the sash weights which are located at the interior of the mold. When now the upper half .of the mold 2 has been completely lifted off from the top of the truck 3 the latter, with the remainder of the mold, passes downwardly beneath an electro-magnet 13 carried by a truck 16 on a transverse horizontal track 17, whereupon the sash weights are lifted out of the mold by the magnet 13, so that the same can be moved sidewise along the track 17 until it overlies a breaker 18. W hen this has been done, the electric circuit, including vthe magnet 13, is broken, thereby releasing the sash weights so that the same fall upon the breaker-18, thus severing the sash weightsfrom the gates to which they are attached, which fall downwardly into a trough or inclined platform 19 located under the breaker 18. When this has been done, the upper half of the mold 2, which is carried by the truck 11, is moved downwardly until it overlies the truck 3, from which it has been removed, where it is released so as to again overlie the lower half of the mold 2. The truck 3 now carrying the entire mold 2 vis then shifted downwardly along the track 4 until it overlies a sand pit 20, and registers with a push rod 21 having a plurality of downwardly inclined teeth 22 which are arranged to be projected through the mold 2 so as to dislodge the sand from the same. v
The push rod 21 is moved up and down by an eccentric 23 on a shaft 24 driven by a belt 25 passing over a pulley 26 thereon and over a pulley 27 on a'shaft 28 which is rotated by any suitable source of power. The eccentric 23 has at its side a pin 29 which engages with a slot 30 in the push rod 21. The push rod 21 is, furthermore, arranged to be supported by a link 31 pivoted at one end of the rod 21 and at the'other end to a stub shaft 32 located on any desired fixed support 33. After the sand has been removed in this manner, the truck 3 is moved upwardly by the elevator 34 until it reaches the upper end of an inclined track 35, from which point the trucks and empty molds carried thereon pass downwardly unt l they reach the storage track 6 adjacent to the molding machine 7, where the molds can be reprepared for succeeding casting operations. The elevator 34 is preferably actuated by the power stored up in the operation of the elevator 5, the same being preferably accomplished by conducting compressed air from a storage tank 35, in which it is stored up by the operation of the elevator 5 through a pipe 35 to the elevator 34. The compressed air which passes, through the pipe 35 to the storage tank 35" is supplied to said pipe 35 from a cylinder 36, in which there is a piston 37 connected to a cable 38, which passes over pulleys 39 and 40, and is attached at its upper end to the top of the elevator 5. The compressed air which is thus stored in the tank 35 is conveyed out of the same by means of a pipe 41 to a branch pipe 42, which-leads to the operating mechanism for the elevator 5. The said operating mechanism comprises a valve 43 from which a pipe 44 leads to a tank 45 adapted to be supplied with a body ofwater through a'pipe 46, and which is maintained at a level somewhat below the top of the tank 45 by means'of a valved over-flow pipe 47. Said valve 43 has an exhaust outlet 48 and is adapted to be operated by a lever 49 which is connected to an elevator controlling cable 50, passing over pulleys 51 and 52 located adjacent to the elevator 5. The valve 43 is thus arranged so as to control the entry of the compressed air into the tank 45 and force the body of water out of the same throughapipe 52, which leads to the bottom of a cylinder 53 in which there is arranged to reciprocate a plunger 54 attached-to the bottom of the elevator 5. The pipe 52 has, furthermore, a valve 55 provided with an operating rod 56 connected by a link 57 to the operating rod 49. The elevator 34 is provided with an-operating mechanism the same as that described in connection with elevator 5 except that instead of cable 38 there is a cable 57, which passes over pulleys 58 and 59 at the top of the elevator, and which is connected to a counter-balance 60.
In the operation of the machine, as indicated above, the molds are filled with sand in succession by the molding machine 7, after which they pass downwardly on the elevator 5 in which the power, produced by the downward movement of the same, is stored up in the form of compressed air in the tank 35, The trucks thereafter pass on to the inclined track 4 in front of the cupola 1 where they receive supplies of molten metal, after which the upper halves of the molds are removed by the hooks 9, the castings removed by the electro-magnet 13 to be subsequently dropped on the breaker 18, thus separating the sash weights from the gates. Then the upper halves of the molds are replaced on the trucks, the sand is removed from the molds by the push rod 21 and. tb :ks carrying the empty molds are then returned to the starting point by means of the elevator 34 operated by compressed air from the tank 35, the track 35, and the storage track 6.
It is apparent from the above that the apparatus described herein may be used advantageously for molding by utilizing a minimum amount of floor space and a minimum amount of labor, as well as a minimum number of molds and trucks.
