TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 4, 1916.
Application filed August 10, 1915. Serial No. 44,784.-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD CHARLES CAR- ROLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vancouver, in the Province of British Columbia and Dominion of Candada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toys, and it has particular reference to a toy of the variety sometimes known as spinning wheels which in a simple form includes a disk having spaced perforations arranged at diametrically opposite sides of the axle of the disk, and a cord or thong threaded through said perforations and having its ends connected, the disk being spun by holding parts of the cord with the hands and twisting the cord, after which by alternately pulling and relaxing the cord the latter will be alternately twisted and untwisted, producing a spinning motion of the disk.
The present invention has for its object to produce a. simple and improved device embracing or including two dished disks and connecting means for the same, said con necting means including tubular portions through which the spinning cord may be threaded.
A further object of the invention. is to produce a device of the class described having a sounding device or sounding devices connected therewith, said sounding devices being in the nature of whistles or the like mounted on the connecting means of the disks so as to project radially with respect to said disks in such fashion that the rotary movement thereof will cause a whistling sound to be produced.
lVith these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claimmay be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing,-Figure -l is aside elevation of the improved toy. Fig, 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 inFig. 1. Fig. 4. is a sectional View taken on the line 44: in Fig. 2.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference. The detachable disks 15, 15 may be struck up or stamped from sheet metal or other material. Said disks are connected together, with their apices touching or contacting with each other by means including two short tubes 16, said tubes opening into the concave faces of the disks, and said tubes being assembledwvith the disks by means of solder or in any other convenient or well known manner. The disks are, furthermore, connected together by means of braces or cross bars 17 connecting the disks at the circumference thereof. Some of these braces are bent intermediate their ends to form an outwardly extending hump 17, said humps being used as supporting means for whistles 18, each of which consists of a lentil-shaped casing of sheet metal or other material having an aperture 19 in one side wall thereof. By reason of the presence of the humps 17 the whistles or sounding devices may be readily mounted about midway between the disks 15 disposed obliquely so as to insure the proper sounding effect. The spinning cord 20 is threaded through the tubes 16, and the ends thereof are connected in the customary manner. In the drawing, the spinning cord has been shown as being provided with padded handles 21 for the purpose of avoiding injury to the fingers of the operator.
The improved toy may be painted, stenciled, enameled or otherwise ornamented to present a neatand attractive appearance. The whistles 18 are to be obviously arranged at a slight angle with respect to the disks 15 so as to present the apertures 19 in such a position that by the rapid rotation of thedevice a sound will be produced.
In the operation of this device, the spinning cord is twisted in the usual manner, after which, by alternately pulling and relaxing the same, a very rapid rotary motion, first in one direction and then in the other direction, will be imparted to the body of the device composed of the disks 15, the rapid spinning motion being accompanied by the not unpleasing sound of the Whistles.
Having thus described the invention, h is claimed as new, isz- A toy of the class descr bed oomprising two dished disks assembled together with vices being disposed about midway between 13 their apices in abutting relation by conthe disks and obliquely with respect thereto. necting means including open-ended spaced In testimony whereof I affix my slgnature tubes, and circumferentialiy dlsposed braces, in presence of two witnesses.
" some of said braces being bent to form out- EDWYARD CHARLES CARROLL wardly projecting humps intermediate the ends thereof, a spinning cord threaded \Vitnesses: through the tubes, and sounding devices JOHN S. CHAMBERS, mounted on the humps, said sounding de- SYDNEY VIGARD.
