' UNITED' STATES PATENT UFFICE.
ROBERT VINTON sAivrrsoN', OE DENVER, COLORADO.
SHOE-FASTENING DEVICE.
Speccaton of Letters Patent.
Patented July a, 191e.
T 0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT V. SAMPsON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Denver, in the county. of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented a new and Improved Shoe-Fastening Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a metallic fastener for shoes, to close the opening therein.
Objects of my invention are to produce a fastener for the indicated purpose, improved in various particulars with respect to strength and simplicity, and to the end that secure fastening, as well as the unfastening of the shoe, may be effected with facility and despatch.
The invention will be particularly eX- plained in the specific description following.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification,
-in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved fastener, showing the same applied and with the co-acting fastener elements in fastened positions; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the separate parts of the fastener, including the securing means; Fig. 8 is a longitudinal section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a plan view of the blank for forming the securing means for one of the fastener elements; and Fig. 5 is a plan View of the blank for forming the other fastener element and the securing means therefor.
In constructing a shoe fastener embodying my invention, in accordance with the illustrated example, a link 11 is hingedly secured at one end by a securing device 10, and the opposite end of the link engages a co-acting fastener element 12.
The securing device 10 is formed of a sheet metal blank as illustrated in Fig. 4, in which blank an eyelet 18 is formed near one end by producing crossed slits 13a in the plate and bending the same, the eyelet being secured to one of the flaps or members A Of the shoe to be fastened. In the blank also an oblong slot 14 is formed at about the center to facilitate bending the plate on itself to produce an outer layer 15 overlying and covering the eyelet 13. At the bend at each side of the slot 14 knuckles 16 are produced to receive pintles 18 on the link 11 to constitute a hinge for said link. Rearward of the knuckles the front plate 15 is arched transversely as at 17, so that the said arch may receive at its end the pintles 18, and the flap thus has a second point of hinging the link 11, thus providing a range of adjustment in the fastener.
The link 11 is formed of wire bent to provide two longitudinal members 19 which at the end adjacentv to the securing device 10 are bent outward laterally as at 2O and then returned to produce the hinge pintles 18 which extend toward each other and are spaced apart and may be sprung apart to enter the outer ends of the knuckles 16. At the opposite end of the members 19 from the hinge pintles 18, a transverse loop is produced byl extending the longitudinal members 19 laterally outward, as at 21, there being a transverse bar 22 joining withV the members 21 by means of bends 22a. The cross-bar 22 is offset from the plane of the longitudinal members 19 and lateral members 21. Y
The blank from which the co-acting fastener element 12 is formed, has an eyelet 23 produced thereon by forming crossed slits 23a and properly bending the tongues thus presented, the eyelet being secured to the opposite flap or member A of the shoe to be fastened. At the Opposite end from the eyelet 23 the blank of the fastening element 12 is slotted longitudinally as at 24 to produce fingers 25 as shown in Fig. 5, and these iingers are bent to form hooks at the front of the fastener element, the hooks projecting outwardly, that is to say, away from the link 11.
With the described construction, the link and the co-acting element 12 having been secured on the shoe, in order to fasten the latter, the loop on the link 11 is engaged with the hooks 25. Said hooks receive the lateral'members 21, which present shoulders at their rear side, the hooks passing at their Outer ends beneath the cross-bar 22. The coacting fastener element thus securely holds the members of the shoe fastened and the cross-bar 22 resists vall strain on the hooks 25, so that they will not be straightened Out either by the pulling strain of the link 11 orV by a blow against the outer ends of the hooks.
Having thus described'my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. A fastener of the character described, including a coupling link formed at one end with a loop having lateral members presenting rearwardly disposed shoulders and a. cross-bar offset from the plane of said lateral members and joining at its ends with the latter; means to secure the opposite end of the link to an article to be fastened; and a fastener member co-acting with the loop of the link, said co-acting member having means whereby to secure it to the article to be fastened and having forwardly projecting hook members in a plane to receive the lateral members of the loop therebeneath and said hook members being adapted to be disposed beneath the cross-bar of the loop.
2. A fastener' of the character described, including a link formed of wire returned on itself presenting at one end a transverse loop having lateral members forming rearwardly disposed shoulders, the loop having a crossbar offset from the plane of said lateral members and oining with the same, the opposite end of the said link having hinge pintles oppositely disposed; a securing plate returned on itself and having a plurality of hinge knuckles to detachably receive said hinge pintle; and a fastener element co-acting with the loop of the link, said co-aeting Genies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the Commissioner o! Patents,
fastener element having a. base provided with means to secure it in position and having hook members spaced from each other toreceive the longitudinal members of the link therebetween, the hook members lying in a plane to receive the lateral members of the loop on the link beneath the said hook members and said hook members being adapted to be disposed beneath the cross-bar of the loop.
3. A fastener comprising co-aeting fastener elements having means to separately secure the same to an article to be fastened, one of said elements having a shank formed with a transverse loop presenting lateral members at the sides of the shank and a cross-bar offset from the plane of the lateral members and connected therewith, the other fastener element having hook members spaced to receive the shank and rearwardly disposed in a plane to extend through the loop to lie over the lateral members thereof and to project beneath the cross-bar thereof.
in testimony whereof I have subscribed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
