Description
NO. HSH. Patented Sep. 12,1871* H ll MM Mum: n
PATENT QFFICE.
ALBERT W. COLE, OF WEST KILLINGLY, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN YARN-BEAMS FOR LOOMS.
Specioation forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,910, dated September 12, 1871.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT W. COLE, of West Killingly, in the county of Windham and State of Connecticut, have invented certain Improve ments in Yarn-Beams for Looms, of which the following is a specification The nature of my invention consists in constructing the yarn-beam with adjustable heads, which slide freely both upon the shaft on which the yarn-beam is fixed and also upon the beam itself, and are provided with set-screws to secure the heads in any position required; the object of my invention being to make the yarnbeam strong and substantial, while at the same time its heads may be readily and firmly adjusted according to the width of the warp required, thereby dispensing with false or skeleton heads, and the delay and trouble consequent upon their use.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side View of my improved yarn-beam, showing the positions of the parts when the heads are adjusted at their full width, the dotted lines E E showing the distance they may be brought toward each other for narrow work. Fig. 2 is a view of the end of the yarn-beam and its shaft with the head removed, and Fig. 3 is a side view of the head detached from the beam.
A is the yarii-beain, constructed of the ordinary size, and firmly secured upon its shaft C, having its ends hollowed out and slotted, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to permit the hub H and arms I I of the head to slide tightly within it. B B are the adjustable heads, which should be made with the dan ge to give greater width to the teeth, and also with the iian ge Gto give greater strength t0 the head and arms. H H are the hubs of the heads B B, fitting closely to the shaft C, their periphery fitting closely within and supporting the ends of the yarn -beam while the arms I I fill the slots D D. C is the shaft ext-ending through the beam, revolving in the ordinary bearings and rotated by the heads, which receive their motion from a sliding gear upon the ordinary shaft now used in looms. S S are the set-screws, which should be placed in front of the arms I I so as to pass within the slots D D.
It will be evident that, if desirable, there may be more or less set-screws and arms I on each head, with their corresponding slots D in the end of the beam, Without changing the mode of construction or the nature of the invention.
I claim as my invention- A yarn-beam constructed as described, with the shaft C, beam A, slots D, adjustable heads B, arms I, hub H, and set-screws S, substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
ALBERT WV. COLE.
